July 16, 2012

Greetings!

Steve Carlin
We started Locals' Night several years ago to create a special time for the community to come out and enjoy the market mid-week. Merchants participate with interesting promotions, new products and tastings. It's a good time to enjoy Oxbow with family and friends, and of course you can bring your guests from out of town!

This time of the year, Tuesday nights are particularly exciting as the river deck gets busy with groups and parties. So take advantage of the season, the scenic view and the large riverfront dining area to celebrate everything we love about living in the Napa Valley and support your local merchants at Oxbow. It's a great night to visit, relax and have some fun.

See you at the Market!

This week for Locals' Night, Ca' Momi Enoteca is highlighting its calzone with prosciutto e funghi or calzone with ricotta e spinaci, plus a glass of Bianco di Napa or Rosso di Napa. The filling for the calzone prosciutto e funghi includes prosciutto, Wine Forest wild mushrooms, organically grown, vine-ripe tomatoes and bufala low-moisture mozzarella. The calzone ricotta e spinaci is filled with Bellwether Jersey ricotta and fresh spinach. Once baked, the calzones are smothered with savory marinara sauce and snips of organic parsley just before being served. LATE BAKE BREADSLate Bake

Most bakeries bake once a day, and that's typically in the early morning hours, well before the sun rises. By the time the bread makes it to the dinner table, it's practically a day-old! The Model Bakery does a late bake every day at around 3 pm, with delivery fresh from their ovens straight to some of wine country's most acclaimed restaurants. Not just limited to restaurants, we can all take advantage of their late bake, so why not stop by the bakery before Locals' night -- or any afternoon -- and bring home a warm loaf for family and friends! Mmmm...late bake rocks!

Specials this Week

ROCCHETTA FROM ITALYRocchetta

Oxbow Cheese Merchant is offering the Rocchetta, a sheep, goat and cows milk cheese from Piedmont, Italy as its Friends of Oxbow special this week at 15% off. This is a mixed milk cheese in the Robiola style that is ripened by letting it sit for several hours prior to pasteurizing which allows the flavors to fully develop. It is produced in the Alta Langa region of Piedmont and is delicately rich. It is a lovely and creamy Robiola combining the flavors of goat's, cow's and sheep's milk into a harmonious balance of flavor. Dense, semi-soft and smooth in texture, Rocchetta is a very approachable and versatile cheese of exquisite quality that pairs beautifully with this bright Vinho Verde.

APHROS 10 VINHO VERDEAphros

The 2011 Aphros 10 Vinho Verde from Portugal is the Friends of Oxbow special at Oxbow Wine Merchant this week. Aphros 10, celebrating Aphrodite, is a premium label produced by Casal do Paço Padreiro in the sub-region of Lima in the Costa Verde, the garden region of northern Portugal. The wine gets its name from this region, having nothing to do with a green tinge or green-ness of flavor as is often thought. Though export was limited, Vinho Verde was one of the first Portuguese wines known in the European markets.  There are many historical references to vineyards in this part of the world, dating back to well before the 13th century. As a fresh, citrus and flowery light, dry white this is always a favorite. This biodynamic example produced from 100% Loureiro exhibits as much beauty as the goddess Aphrodite herself with clean, bright citrus flavors, ample acidity, a hint of minerals, and a refreshingly low 10% alcohol. This is a perfect aperitif, a sipper by itself, or can be paired with lighter foods for brilliant results. Both the Aphros 10 Vinho Verde and the matching cheese are 15% off this week only.
