CELEBRATING EL SALVADOR - 5/22
 Ritual Coffee Roasters hosts Nancy Majano de Arenivar, the producer of Monte Rey: Carrizal (El Salvador), tomorrow evening (Tuesday) from 6 to 8 pm for a special coffee tasting. Join Nancy to hear about her farm and her relationship with Ritual (one that goes back to 2008). There will be coffee samples as well as flights of her coffee brewed in a variety of ways. Take advantage of the opportunity to meet the person who was at the very beginning of your cup of coffee! If you haven't tried a sandwich from The Fatted Calf, you don't know what you're missing. Their sandwiches start from the best bread around, which is carefully sourced from artisan bakers. The next addition is their fresh-made, farm egg aioli, olive tapenade or another inspired and amazing sauce. The Fatted Calf scours local farms all over the Bay area to procure outrageously tasty and seasonal vegetable offerings. AREPA PEPEADA
Slowly braised chicken, shredded, mixed with creamy avocado, peppers, onions, peas, cilantro, lime, and a few other kickers that make this arepa one of Pica Pica's -- and Venezuela's -- top sellers. Roughly translated as the "Curvy Queen," it was named after the 1955 Miss World from Venezuela -- Susana Duijm. The word pepeada refers to the beautiful and voluptuous.

The newest flavor at Kara's Cupcakes is hummingbird, an organic banana, pineapple and pecan studded cake with a toasted pecan cream cheese frosting (available through 6/19). SPICY ORANGE MARINADE
Every week this summer Five Dot Ranch will be featuring different marinades that will spice up your meat and satisfy your taste buds. This week check out the spicy orange marinade with a refreshing citrus taste and a little zing! The marinade is made with spices from Whole Spice, garlic, red bell peppers, soy sauce and orange zest. You can't go wrong with this marinade slathered on a Five Dot steak cooked medium rare on the grill. FYI...the Five Dot Ranch Meat Club is in the works and the details are being hashed out. The goal is to offer customers a variety of meat cuts every week, recipe suggestions and meat information. This will be coming soon so stay tuned!

MT. TAM FROM POINT REYES
Oxbow Cheese Merchant is offering the Mt. Tam, a cow's milk cheese from Point Reyes as its Friends of Oxbow special this week at 15% off. This decadent triple cream comes from the famous Cowgirl Creamery in California. Just North of the San Francisco Bay, Mt. Tamalpais rises like a monument to Northern California's natural beauty. In deference, Cowgirl Creamery named its signature cheese MT TAM. It's a smooth, creamy, elegant, 10-oz, triple-cream -- made with tasty, organic milk from the Straus Family Dairy. MT TAM is firm, yet buttery with a mellow, earthy flavor reminiscent of white mushrooms. This cheese is truly a crowd pleaser. It has a rich flavor and soft texture and pairs beautifully with this melon flavored white from Southern France.

BARRUOL COTES DU RHONE
The 2010 Barruol Cotes du Rhone Blanc, Sunflower Cuvee from the Rhone Valley in southern France is the Friends of Oxbow special at Oxbow Wine Merchant this week. Louis Barruol is an indefatigable force in the Rhône. He is the 14th generation in his family to be making wine in this 16th-century domaine in Gigondas. This flavorful, complex white Rhone is a spirited blend of Marsanne, Viognier, Roussanne and Picpoul de Pinet from Louis' estate vineyards. When the Rhone is mentioned, most people automatically think of red wine; however the amazing whites of the Rhone are often overlooked. White Rhone production is tiny compared to the amount of red wine made, and white Rhones are more than a delicious curiosity; they belong in the annals of great white wines of the world. They have tangy mineral flavors, earthy, exotic notes and floral aromas from the Viognier. This is a mouthful of satisfying fruit explosion that coats the tongue and brings you back for another sip, or even a gulp. Both the Barruol Cotes du Rhone Blanc and the matching cheese are 15% off this week only. |
