Summer is near, it's getting warmer outside, and The Olive Press is in love with its jalapeno olive oil with peach balsamic vinegar for a refreshingly sweet, spicy treat. PASTURED PROTEIN
The Farmers Market is back and you can come peruse, browse and forage your way to a week of perfect meals. Make sure to visit The Fatted Calf for your pastured protein needs after you've carefully selected your baby greens or braising greens, carrots, radishes, strawberries, cherries and apricots. Nothing pairs with local vegetables and fruits like The Fatted Calf's amazing variety of meats, pickled vegetables and grocery items. Need to liven up some roots? They've got rendered pork, duck and lamb fat...or the house-cured pancetta works as well. If you oversleep, they should have a few dozen farm eggs left. And if you wake up early, don't forget the bacon!

LA TUR FROM ITALY
Oxbow Cheese Merchant is offering the La Tur, a mix of cow, goat and sheep's milk cheese from Piedmont, Italy, as its Friends of Oxbow special this week at 15% off. From the great wine region of Piemonte comes La Tur: a dense, creamy blend of pasteurized cow, goat and sheep milk. In La Tur exists all the best characteristics of a soft goat, sheep and cow's milk cheese combined. Runny and oozing around the perimeter with a moist, cakey, palate-coating paste, its flavor is earthy and full, with a lingering lactic tang. The effect is like ice cream served from a warm scoop: decadent and melting from the outside in. A small 8-oz. triple cream cheese that almost looks like a pastry in its own little paper cup, La Tur is another lovely creation of the cheese manufacturer Caseificio dell'Alta Langa. This rich cheese is the perfect foil for this refreshing Sauvignon Blanc.

RED LAVA SAUVIGNON BLANC
The 2009 Red Lava Sauvignon Blanc from the Red Hills in Lake County is the Friends of Oxbow special at Oxbow Wine Merchant this week. Bud Lawson, owner of Red Lava Vineyards knows soil and chose this location to grow Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc. This Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from the Red Hills region of Lake County, just north of Napa Valley. This warm, elevated region is named for its soil, which is mainly red lava (the winery's namesake) left over from eruptions of the region's long-extinct volcanoes. Sauvignon Blanc is perfectly paired to the growing conditions of Lake County. The porous volcanic soil, high elevations, hot days tempered by lake breezes and clean air of this newly discovered wine growing region add up to heaven for this grape. On the palate, vibrant flavors of citrus are present with a touch of minerality. It is well balanced with a bright structure, intense aromas of citrus fruits and hay combined with a refreshing finish. Both the Red Lava Sauvignon Blanc and the matching cheese are 15% off this week only. |
