God's Promises About Loving Others
Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love covers all offenses.Proverbs 10:12 Disregarding another person's faults preserves love; telling about them separates close friends.Proverbs 17:9 If you welcome a prophet as one who speaks for God, you will receive the same reward a prophet gets. And if you welcome good and godly people because of their godliness, you will be given a reward like theirs. And if you give even a cup of water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.Matthew 10:41-42 I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Jut as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.John 13:34:-35

Leo Smith Announces Retirement
After seven years as Texas Baptist Men Executive Director and more than four decades holding various leadership posts in the organization, Leo Smith has announced plans to retire effective Feb. 28. Smith, will continue to serve during a transitional period as the Board seeks a new staff leader. "God has blessed Texas Baptist Men, and it is time for fresh leadership to take the organization to greater heights," he said. "God is not through with Texas Baptist Men." Smith first became involved before it even was Texas Baptist Men-working with the Royal Ambassadors program for boys in the mid-1960s through the Baptist General Convention of Texas Brotherhood Department. A couple of years later, Texas Baptist Men became a self-governing organization. In the decades that followed, Smith was a vice president of various TBM programs, and was elected TBM president in 2001. He was elected executive director in February 2004. When Smith became executive director, TBM had a $900,000 annual budget, based entirely on funding from the Baptist General Convention of Texas. TBM now administers $3.2 million annually, including disaster relief funds, even though funding through the BGCT Cooperative Program has dropped to less than $500,000 a year. "The most gratifying thing personally has been seeing the activity of God every day," he said. Seven years ago, TBM had eight full-time staff. Now, in addition to 10 full-time staff, there are four who work part-time and seven who serve on a volunteer basis. While TBM is approaching the 10,000 mark in its roster of trained disaster relief volunteers. Water purification has become the fastest-growing ministry - and the one Smith believes holds the greatest potential for international missions service. "The water-purification ministry is growing by leaps and bounds. Pure water is a need that's present every day. Disaster relief is seasonal," he said. Born in Ysleta, near El Paso, Smith became a Christian and surrendered to the gospel ministry at Baptist Temple in San Antonio. He earned a degree from the University of Corpus Christi and served more than 49 years as a pastor-the last 25 at Highlands Baptist Church in LaMarque. He and his wife of 51 years, Cordelia, have five children and nine grandchildren. While Smith looks forward to spending more time with family in retirement, he insists his enthusiasm for TBM and his belief in the organization's future remains greater than ever. "This has been the most fun I've ever had in my life" he said. To read the entire story in the Baptist Standard, CLICK HERE

Let's Get Acquainted
THE BLUE TARP/ROOF UNIT By Cindy Wesch Area Director for the Central Texas I am taking this opportunity to introduce you to the different units that are here in Central Texas. The first is the Blue Tarp/Roof Unit. The Blue Tarp/Roof Unit idea was conceived in Florida during Hurricane Charlie's recovery in 2003. This was our first deployment with "TBM Disaster Relief". We were deployed to the Orlando area as a change-out crew for the Austin Baptist Association Laundry Unit. Charles Lucas and his crew were the initial crew, and we were the relief crew. We got chased out by the next Hurricane five days later. They had four hurricanes in a row that year. We also doubled up as assessors to evaluate the priority for clean up or help for damaged homes and yards, which were called into the on-scene DOC at First Baptist Church of Kissimmee. During the evaluation process we noticed a lot of blue tarps on roofs of houses. During this process we found out that the only tarp unit in North America was from Canada! Because of the Hurricanes, The laundry unit was stored in Georgia in a warehouse for protection, and we were evacuated back to Texas. After we returned home our team began discussing our experiences, and the subject of the blue tarps was brought up, and the possibilities of putting a unit together. We went to the Lord in prayer. Our Laundry unit was not called out in 2004. The laundry unit had sustained some damages returning to Austin from Georgia. Later, the team received approval to rebuild a combination Laundry/shower unit. Because of that approval the old unit was put up for sale. Charles Lucas and Maynard Clark discussed the possibility of purchasing the unit with First Baptist Church of Bastrop staff and their Missions Committee, redesigning and making it a Tarp unit. With the "blessing" of all, the Tarp Unit began to organize. With the purchasing of equipment, provided by First Baptist Church, and tarp donations by FEMA, the unit was now complete and ready to respond. | | Feeding the homeless |
Our first callout came during the floods in Copperas Cove. In 2008 the arrival of" Hurricane Dolly" again put the unit in deployment. Maynard Clark is the current Unit Coordinator and one of the Unit Directors. If you would like more information on this unit, please contact Maynard Clark. (512) 332-2035
