Cookie Crumbs
1. All the Buckets of Hope from Texas have been shipped to Florida. The buckets were picked up at Distribution Centers in Amarillo, San Antonio, Dallas, Corsicana and Marshall Texas. The final count total from Texas was just over 12,500. NAMB reported that over 152,000 had been collected from all state conventions. Florida Baptist Convention is taking the lead in distribution of the buckets in Haiti. The Buckets are now being held in Haitian customs waiting for government approval to release them.
The teams from Florida will be distributing the buckets of hope to the pastors of churches that Florida has been working with in Haiti for over 15 years. These pastors will then distribute the buckets to their church members and others in need. By allowing the pastors to do the distribution it helps the churches in Haiti minister to the people in need, which can cause a longer lasting impact on the lives of those receiving the assistance. Also, while this sounds like a huge number of buckets and food to us, it is only a small amount going to the great need in Haiti. 2. Would you like to become more involved? There are great opportunities for volunteers of all skills. Contact your nearest Area Director listed above.

God's Comfort in Times of Trouble
"I am overcome with joy because of your unfailing love, for you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul".Psalm 31:7No one likes to suffer, yet we all have times of difficulty, pain and uncertainty. God's word does not promise us relief from all those troubles in this life, but it does say that we can take our problems to Jesus in prayer and He will carry them for us. Faithful people all over the globe have witnessed dramatic healing of the sick, the solving of financial woes, or the comfort and peace that comes following a difficult period in their lives. "Give your burdens to the Lord and He will take care of you"Psalm 55:22

August 1998 - It was not a quiet month!
TBM sent two volunteers and two water purifiers to China to help flood victims along the Yangze River where rising waters claimed more than 2000 lives. Other TBM volunteers delivered hay donated by farmers in Missouri and Kansas to drought-stricken farms and ranches in Texas. Then the remnants of Tropical Storm Charley hit the Texas shore near Corpus Christi. The next day the storm dumped 12 inches of water in 24 hours on Del Rio...more than that area had received in 12 months. Six inches more fell in the next few days. A TBM Disaster Relief Mobile Unit moved in and served 76,500 meals in ten days. In addition, mudout crews arrived to help residents begin the process of cleanup and recovery. By the time the emergency food service ended, Texas Baptists had prepared about 140,000 meals.

Texas Baptist Men Going To Chile
There is a second team leaving to go to Chile to help build homes for Baptist pastors who lost their homes in the earthquake earlier this year. This team is complete, and they leave on May 24th. The other four members of the team will leave on May 26th. They will return on June 8th. They are led by Ricky Null. Please keep that team in your prayers for the two weeks that they will be gone. Pray for the situation in Chile. Winter is upon them and the rain has begun. Some of the people including the pastors are still living in tents. The earthquake there was 15 times stronger than the one in Haiti. Twenty seven Baptist church sanctuaries suffered major damage or were destroyed completely. Many more congregations have members whose homes were damaged or destroyed. Lumber is hard to find. The steel company that produces 80% of the roofing in Chile was destroyed by the tsunami that the earthquake created.

DISASTROUS FLOODING IN THE NORTHEAST
As many of you know, recent flooding on a scale rarely seen in New England forced hundreds of people from their homes. Water filled homes, across New England, suffered wide spread damage. Surrounding states sent SBC Recovery teams to begin the task of clean out in the devastated area.
Twelve TBM-DR volunteers went to Billerica, MA to assist with the flood damage. They departed April 29 and returned May 11. During the time there, 22 jobs were completed. 20 of the jobs were basement mudouts. The water level ranged from 2 inches to 4 feet. Two jobs were chainsaw. The volunteers were housed at New Colony Baptist Church in Billerica, MA. According to Ralph Rogers it was a great trip with many opportunities to share the love of Jesus.
Ralph Rogers - Amarillo; (Blue Cap) Elaine and RL Barnard - Duncanville; Bill Bell and Joe Henard - Amarillo; Jerry Bunch - Carrollton; Bob Crane and Cindy Wesch - Midlothian; Bill Hyden, Jim Lawton and Carol Calvert - Waxahachie; Ben Moberley - Spring Branch. TBM-DR will be sending their 2nd team to the New England area from May 19 until June 2, to continue the recovery effort. That team will be lead by Russell Schieck. |

The Science of Weather
Our planet earth is a "Weather Machine", as it was called on a PBS special over 30 years ago. They stated that it is "fueled by the sun's energy and its own motions in space." These motions, the changing seasons, the water that falls from the skies, and the clouds that race over our heads, are of vital importance in our lives. The weather is always with us. In many ways it sometimes controls our lives. Its one constant, is that it is never constant.
Aristotle named the science of weather "meteorology". The early Greek thinkers suspected that the weather had more to do with natural laws than divine whim. Since that time we have begun to understand some of the principles behind the weather, but we have been unable to control it.

100-YEAR FLOOD
The term "100-year flood" is misleading because it causes people to believe that it happens once every 100 years. The truth is that an uncommonly large flood can happen any year. A better term would be the "1-in-100 chance flood". There does not seem to be any set pattern to the spacing of these floods. Probabilities are calculated for 10, 20 and 30-year floods. These estimates figure prominently in building permits, environmental regulations and flood insurance.
MUDFLOODS, MUDFLOWS AND DEBRIS FLOWS
These three terms are technically different, yet the results are often the same. These super-concentrated sediment/debris flows, in populated areas, cause millions of dollars worth of damage every year. From large storm events the volume of water and sediment may exceed the storage capacity of retention basins, run-off channels or levees. When these basins overflow or collapse, the force of the mudflow can carry away objects as large as cars, destroy homes and buildings, inundate low-lying communities, and even cause deaths.

Whether you believe that we are facing a period of global warming, or you believe that a cooling trend is coming soon, the weather will always be a source of comment, disagreement and discovery. Despite the weather satellites, and scientist's predictions, we all know that God is the One in control.

Chainsaw Retreat
The 2010 Chainsaw Retreat was held April 12 - 16 at Mt. Lebanon Camp at Cedar Hills, Texas. Basic chainsaw, advanced chainsaw, climbing and chainsaw training on ladders and roofs were offered. The camp suffered significant damage to trees due to an early spring snow storm. In addition to the many training opportunities there were many hours of work cleaning up the damaged trees. There was also time for fellowship and worship. The retreat was coordinated by Dwayne Bechtold.

 Former Voodoo Priest Baptized
From Dr. Fred Sorrells
What an awesome privilege to participate in the baptism of my friend and former voodoo priest, Jean Odlin and his wife. Since there is no baptistry in the church, we had to travel by a pickup taxi, known as a taptap, for an hour to find a suitable place in a river. I have never witnessed the meaning of baptism any clearer than when Jean was immersed - signifying death to voodoo worship - and raised to walk in newness of life as a Christ follower. Hallelujah!!! I spent numerous times with Jean this week helping him understand the true meaning of baptism and how to continue to grow in Christ. I was also asked to preach in the local Baptist church where Jean and his family are now members.
Former voodoo priest, Jean Odlin prepares to be baptized by Pastor Evens
Jovin in a river outside of Port-au-Prince. Due to a foot injury during the January 12th earthquake in Haiti, he approached Dr. Fred Sorrells for medical help. That encounter led to Jean accepting Christ as his Lord and Savior, repenting of voodoo by burning his fetishes and potions, and following Christ in baptism. Many of his family members, including his wife, have now accepted Christ.

Medical Equipment for Haiti
Members of The Heights Baptist Church in Richardson, TX, gathered at TBM headquarters on Sunday, May 2, to inventory and palletize medical equipment that will be shipped to earthquake victims in Haiti.

The Heights was one of the 35 churches in Dallas and Collin Counties participating in community projects the first weekend in May. The goals were to demonstrate the love of Christ by going beyond the walls of the church to reach into the community and to give church members the experience of serving.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God - not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
Ephesians 2:8
