······················· LOOKING BACK
Sixteen Years Ago January 17, 1994
An
earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale shakes Southern
California, causing at least 50 deaths, more than 4,500 injuries, and
about $30 billion in property damage. Texas Baptist volunteers joined
other Baptists from other states serving more than a half-million meals
in the first two weeks after the earthquake rocks the San Fernando
Valley, just north of Los Angeles.

2009 - An Amazing Year
Though 2009 didn't have the catastrophic disasters of previous years, there were many opportunities to provide needed help in smaller more focused ways.
October 2009 hit many families hard in many parts of the South due to heavy rains and flooding.
There were two TBM/NAMB sponsored deployments in 2009, one unit went to Louisville, Kentucky for twelve days with a total of eleven volunteers, and another team went to Atlanta, Georgia for thirteen days with a total of fifteen volunteers.

Volunteers for these two call-outs came from all parts of Texas, with one volunteer from New Mexico. They included Bob Crane, Elaine Barnard, Joe Henard, George Hamontree, Bill Bell, Cindy Wesch, Jerry Bunch, Mary Bess, Oliver Jackson, Bill Hyden, Pat Gilliland and Steve Struck, according to Ralph Rogers, Cleanout Coordinator.
Texas Baptist Men currently have eleven mudout units located in the state of Texas. These include nine single purpose units and two multipurpose units.
Six of these units are being refurbished. The remaining units are ready to serve, and have equipment sufficient to support 250 volunteers.
There are currently thirteen certified mudout trainers.
CALL OF THE WILD
In May 2009, the Yukon River had experienced an unusual ice jam that backed
the water up for miles upriver from Eagle. As temperatures warmed and
the ice melted, the jam broke and suddenly released all of that water,
mixed with chunks of ice as big as houses. The river instantly rose
about 20 feet and destroyed everything within 100 yards of the south
side of the river, including the town's small clinic.

In July, teams of builders went to Eagle, Alaska to help rebuild a
number of log/timber homes which had been destroyed by the ice breakup and flooding on
the Yukon River. Eagle is an extremely remote area, 200 miles by
mountain road from civilization. Close to the Canadian border, supplies
were either brought in by truck or float plane.

The houses were prefabricated log cabin packages, and had been assembled with their roofs by the time our team arrived. While waiting for electrical supplies, the men built nine very attractive outhouses with materials scrounged from the damaged homes.
The group was fed by the townspeople in an old historic lodge. According to Ed Acklin the salmon patties were the best he had ever tasted.

Samaritan's Purse coordinated the effort and arranged for other teams to complete the interiors.
