| E.D. Hatem Abudayyeh Quoted in NNAAC's Newsletter AAAN Executive Director on the National Network for Arab American Communities' Advocacy Week:
We believe that the Department of Homeland Security and the Obama administration have a lot of questions to answer, especially in regards to ICE raids in Arizona and elsewhere, and to the racial, national, and religious profiling inherent in the NSEERS program and 'terrorist watch lists.' And NNAAC went to D.C., with a unified Arab American voice, to challenge these policies and demand these answers.
During Advocacy Week, which took place April 20-22, participants met with allied organizations, listened to detailed briefings on issues facing the community, and met with elected officials. The three key issues were comprehensive immigration reform, an end to racial profiling, and support for national service programs.

"God bless all the Palestinian mothers, for they have
suffered more than anyone," said Arab Women's Committee member Afaf Issa at the
committee's May 13 Mothers' Day Celebration. Issa, who hails from Beitunia, won
the "Best Mother" contest--one of the day's many activities.

The AAAN is sending a youth delegation to the U.S. Social Forum in Detroit at the end of June. The Forum is a gathering of people from different social justice movements and communities around the country. It will provide a space to build
relationships, learn from each other's experiences, and share analysis
of the problems our communities face. It will help develop leadership,
vision, and strategies needed to build a more just society.

This year at the Social Forum, the U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN) has organized an entire track devoted to Palestine. Stay in touch to hear about the forum after we get back!

Celebrating Women

Arab Women's Committee Commemorates Mothers' Day "Raising children is not difficult,"
according to Afaf Issa. "It is a gift from God, like planting a garden
with beautiful flowers. You water them and take care of them and you know they
will turn out well." Issa's faith and optimism won her "Best
Mother" at the AAAN's Arab Women's Committee May 13
Mothers' Day Celebration. To compete for the title, a handful of committee
members presented their accomplishments as mothers to the rest of the (several
dozen) women, and a judging panel chose winners. Helping women acknowledge and take pride in their strengths
is one of the goals of the Arab Women's Committee, which promotes leadership
among Arab immigrant and Arab American women in greater Chicagoland. The committee
works on building self-reliance and self-esteem, helping mothers deal with the
cultural gap between themselves and their children, and identifying issues in
the community that affect members--as well as finding creative ways to address
those issues.
One way the committee's members have identified important
issues is through a writing project. In 2008, two groups of 10 women wrote
about the difficulties they have faced as immigrant women in this country.
Read one of their stories (translated into English) from the
project.
Follow us on twitter to find out the moment the book of
stories becomes available!
