AAAN sponsors parenting skills workshop

"We are going to address all the little things because it is very important for our kids," Lamees Talhami told a group of 20 women attending a parenting skills workshop organized by the Arab American Action Network (AAAN) at the Green Hills Public Library. The panel of speakers included Lamees, a social worker and member of the AAAN Board of Directors, Rania Shkairat, the AAAN Family Empowerment Program Coordinator and Lina Zayed, a high school public school teacher. Here are 15 steps you can take to improve your child's behavior:
1. Help your children with their homework whether it is sitting down with them and making sure they complete all their assignments or getting them a tutor.
2. Read with your kids daily and when they are older, have them read to you.
3. Communicate with your children's teachers. If language is a barrier, then request the school provide a translator. It is the duty of the school to fulfill your request.
4. Children must get 10 hours of sleep per night.
5. Have your children learn healthy eating habits at a young age. Make them eat breakfast and cut down on their sugar intake.

Never Silent Cafe |
|
| Youth work to raise funds for trip
"Tariq, I see pain in the colors of my flag, black, the color of anger, the anger of that night, that night I saw for the first time her tears, my mother's tears running down her face, because of him, because she heard he died, her son had died, Tariq had died," Aysha Alakhras, 17, shouts to an audience of more than 50. "While he was protecting us, protecting our home, protecting his friend, but he couldn't protect himself from them. He couldn't protect himself from them because he didn't have guns like them. He didn't have more than his hands and his hands couldn't protect him. They shot him in the heart and his sweet red blood irrigated our beautiful, green Palestine." Aysha is one of more than 20 performers who took to the stage at the Never Silent Café put on by the youth of the Arab American Action Network (AAAN) on May 2. The night featured break dancers, beat boxers, short film screenings, spoken word performances in English and Arabic and a live band.
