BHC Receives Grant to
Augment Senior Services
In 2010, the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation (RMHF) awarded BHC with a $70,000 grant to provide more health-related services to low-income seniors. In 2011, RMHF expanded its commitment with a $250,000 pledge to help BHC build high-quality senior apartments as part of its new Beckstoffer's Mill community in Church Hill.
"Thanks to support from foundations, corporations and individuals, we can offer programs that help seniors age comfortably in place and with dignity, free of charge," said Joyce Jackson, vice president of Community Social Work for BHC. "RMHF's generosity helps make a difference in the physical, mental and social well-being of our residents."

BHC's health programs include socialization activities. |
BHC's social workers include senior specialists who serve nearly 700 residents in seven residential communities in Richmond, Chesterfield and Petersburg. They provide case management, coordinate health screenings and recreational activities, and connect residents with community resources for their healthcare needs.
A measurable outcome is reducing hypertension and diabetes among residents. Nearly one quarter of the residents exercise at least three times a week.
"Promoting prevention and health activities translates to better health for these residents," added Jackson. "Ultimately, our privately funded programs save millions of taxpayer dollars that might otherwise pay for indigent medical care and nursing home placements. We strive to be good stewards of the investments that RMHF and others make to improve the lives of seniors." |
Winchester Greens Youngsters 'Hoop it Up'
 | |
Hula hooping is a fun way for kids to get exercise. |
Of all the craft exercise activities held at the Winchester Greens Community Center in January, hula hooping was a favorite among young residents. Children made hula hoops from irrigation tubing, connectors, colorful tape, and beans and macaroni for noise-making.
Children and BHC staff had a great time making hoops together and playing with them at the center. Many of the children took their hoops home, but some hoops remained in the center for exercise and now-popular hula-hooping contests.
In addition to the hula hoops, kids made snow globes, jewelry, and other crafts. Proud of what they had made, many of the kids gave their creations to their parents as gifts. |
The Hill Topper 5k to Preserve Church Hill Landmark
BHC is proud to support the first annual Hill Topper 5k, which will be run through the scenic streets of historic Church Hill on Sunday, March 25. The race begins at 8 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Robinson Theater Community Arts Center on Q Street.
 | |
The Hill Topper 5k will benefit the Robinson Theater. |
Originally constructed in 1937, the Robinson Theater was a hub for live entertainment in a thriving neighborhood. The theater closed in the mid 1980's and reopened in 2008 after extensive renovation. Today it houses activities for all ages, including receptions, recitals, Saturday matinees, music lessons, and community meetings.

Come out and run or walk to help preserve this bright spot in Church Hill! You'll cross the finish line at the Church Hill Irish Festival where you can enjoy live bands, shopping, and great food and beverages.
Visit the Hill Topper 5k website for registration and race details. |
