story_1Beckstoffer's Mill Apartments Welcome First Resident
Edward Bolling
Edward Bolling is presented with the keys
to his new apartment.

The first phase of BHC's newest community in Church Hill, Beckstoffer's Mill Apartments and Lofts, is ready for residents to move in!  Beckstoffer's Mill offers modern, energy-efficient homes within the original structure of a historic lumber mill.  Occupying a block on N. 28th Street between R and S Streets, the community will serve as an anchor for further revitalization in the neighborhood.

On January 13, BHC welcomed Edward Bolling as the first resident of Beckstoffer's Mill.  "This is the perfect place for me," he said.  "I'll enjoy living here and look forward to meeting my neighbors soon."

"These new apartments offer several upscale amenities at an affordable rate," said Mary Kay Huss, BHC's VP of Operations.  "Residents enjoy free wireless access, off-street covered parking, living on the bus line just minutes from downtown, and low utility bills thanks to eco-friendly construction features.  The history of the building itself adds to the appeal and creates homes that are one of a kind."

story_3Teacher becomes happy homeowner

High school English teacher Elizabeth Giffin became the proud owner of a BHC home in December 2011.  Elizabeth moved to Richmond 10 years ago from Northern Virginia and has lived all over the city, but of all Richmond's neighborhoods, Church Hill is her favorite.

"I love the historic homes and shops, and I think Church Hill has some of the best restaurants," she said.

Elizabeth purchased her home in Church Hill after some of her friends, who also became first-time homeowners through BHC, encouraged her to look at what BHC has to offer.  She now lives in a neighborhood she loves, close to the James River and many of her other favorite spots.

"It's great having space that's 100 percent mine," said Elizabeth.  "My experience with Better Housing Coalition has been wonderful."
