story1BHC Communities receive local and state recognition
Claiborne Square

Claiborne Square is centrally located in the Halifax area of Petersburg, VA.

Claiborne Square opened its doors in August 2011 as a new high quality, affordable community for low-income seniors in Petersburg, Virginia.  BHC partnered with Restoration of Petersburg CDC to develop the community and ensure that it meets the needs of area residents.  By combining sustainable construction with ongoing resident support services, BHC's first revitalization initiative in Petersburg will be the catalyst for further investment and transformation in the City.

Virginia Housing Awards
BHC and Restoration of Petersburg CDC receive the award for Claiborne Square.

BHC and Restoration of Petersburg CDC were honored to receive the Virginia Housing Award for Best Housing Development on November 17 at the 2011 Governor's Housing Conference.  The Virginia Housing Awards celebrate successful, innovative, and effective efforts to meet Virginia's diverse housing needs.  Claiborne Square is a 47-unit community with a variety of amenities that enable our seniors to live comfortably and safely.

Additionally, BHC's Lincoln Mews community received two awards during ULI Richmond's 2011 Vision Awards on November 30 at the Hippodrome Theater - winning in the categories of Sustainable Development and Best Overall Development

Lincoln Mews
Lincoln Mews after renovation by BHC

After-school program
After-school programs at Lincoln Mews provide a nurturing environment for young residents.

Lincoln Mews is the complete transformation of the former Lincoln Manor apartments in North Richmond.  Many of the units were vacant and in serious disrepair at the time BHC acquired the property in 2008.  BHC renovated the community in two phases to prevent the displacement of residents, and upgraded the apartments with energy-efficient features that significantly lower utility costs for residents.  The new Community Center, which also incorporates green building technologies, serves as a central location for BHC's community social workers to provide free and voluntary enrichment programs for all age groups, including after-school programs and employment training.

BHC is grateful to receive these awards, and thanks all of our supporters who have made our efforts possible!
