New Program Teaches Teens Culinary Skills

Students learn to prepare meals in the Community Center. |
Through a partnership with Chesterfield Virginia Cooperative Extension, Cooking Matters for Teens is a new program offered to young residents at the Winchester Greens Community Center. The program consists of six two-hour classes in which teens learn how to make healty food choices, how to create meals for friends and family, and the importance of family mealtime. Some of the dishes prepared by students so far include homemade vegetable pizza, fruit salad, sweet potato biscuits, and vegetable soup. After every session, each student takes home a bag of ingredients to replicate the meal for their families.

Carter Woods Gets Moving
| Residents have a new way to exercise outdoors. |
Senior residents of Carter Woods have a new way to get moving thanks to Eastern Henrico FISH. Eastern Henrico FISH generously donated two bicycles to the community, and they were immediately a big hit. On the day the bicycles arrived, residents eagerly took turns riding around the community's outdoor trails. We would like to thank Eastern Henrico Fish for their gift, which fits perfectly with our goal of promoting exercise and healthy lifestyles among residents.

Corporate Volunteers Brighten BHC Communities
|
Capital One volunteers paint fences at
St. Andrew's. |
BHC would like to thank Capital One and Genworth Financial for their recent service to our communities. During their 'One Week' of volunteerism, May 16-20, Capital One took on several projects for BHC: constructing a bocce ball court and horseshoe pit at Carter Woods, assembling care packages for seniors and back-to-school packages for young residents, painting fences and porches at St. Andrew's Townhomes, and landscaping the community garden at Winchester Greens. As an Investing for Good award recipient, BHC thanks Capital One for their leadship and support in making our communities even better places to live.

Genworth volunteers and residents |
On June 23, a group of volunteers from Genworth planted flowers at the entrance of BHC's newly-renovated Lincoln Mews, adding color and warmth to the landscape. They also put down fresh mulch on the flower beds and in front of the Community Center. The young residents, now out of school, spent the afternoon helping the volunteers. Once the project was completed, the volunteers and kids gathered together in the Community Center to celebrate the day's accomplishments with cookies and lemonade. Thanks to Genworth for all their hard work, and for providing a fun experience for our young residents! |
