Capital One Restores Fences at Jefferson Mews

Capital One volunteers

Priming fences for fresh paint
On Monday, September 20, Capital One associates held a community-wide volunteer day to assist various nonprofits in the area.  BHC was among the fortunate organizations to receive their support, as a team of fourteen volunteers contributed to a much-needed fence painting project at Jefferson Mews.

Jefferson Mews was BHC's first revitalization initiative in Church Hill, completed in 1996.  The full block consists of a mix of affordable townhouse rental apartments and single-family homes.  With the help of Capital One, the backyard fences of the apartments look like new!  BHC thanks all the volunteers who helped make such a large impact on the community in the span of one afternoon.  Our volunteers and community partners like Capital One are crucial to our mission of changing lives and transforming communities through high quality, affordable housing.
nnoVCU Nursing Interns Support Senior Residents

During their fall semester, nine students from the VCU School of Nursing are working with BHC's Senior Specialists at Market Square and Rockwood Village for their clinical rotation for community health nursing.  They will be monitoring our senior residents' blood pressure and blood sugar levels, conducting mini assessments, and providing health education.  Their clinical instructor, Sue Linder, rotates between the sites.

VCU Interns with BHC Senior Specialist Gloria Myers

This internship at BHC's senior communities exposes students to how low-income seniors adjust to chronic health problems as they get the help they need through quality affordable housing and senior health initiatives.  BHC thanks VCU for their partnership in helping us care for our seniors!
gardenParks and Recreation Treats Seniors to a Day Out
Randolph residents prepare for their day out
Once a month, Parks and Recreation visits our seniors at Randolph Place and treats them to a field trip or fun group activity.  This month's destination was a seafood restaurant in Colonial Heights.  "We usually have about 60 people," said one resident.  "Almost everyone goes."

Other activities include exercise sessions, games and outings for shopping.  These activities not only contribute to our residents' overall health and well-being - they enhance the sense of community and fellowship and Randolph Place.  Our residents look forward to getting together each month when Parks and Recreation arrives.
