Sonjia and her children

Sonjia Monteria, a first-time home buyer in Oak Summit at Goose Creek, was featured in the August issue of skirt! Richmond along with her two daughters.  She works in social services at CHIP (Children's Health Involving Parenting), teaching parents critical nurturing skills such as nutrition and childhood literacy education.

Prior to purchasing her eco-friendly BHC home, Sonjia worked with New Visions New Ventures Civic Association and H.O.M.E. Inc. to obtain down payment assistance and home ownership education.  "Patience and persistence pays off," says Sonjia.  "I never realized how many forms and phone calls it takes to be a homeowner."

Sonjia is proud to have a place to call her own, and happy to live in a neighborhood where her children can play safely outside.  Adjacent to historic Manchester in Richmond's Southside, Oak Summit at Goose Creek will consist of 45 quality, low-maintenance affordable homes upon completion.  To view all of BHC's available homes, visit www.BHChomes.org.
nnoNational Night Out Builds Camaraderie Among Market Square Residents

The 2010 National Night Out at Market Square, held on August 3, was a lively event orchestrated by the residents.  The event planning began after residents were able to secure a Neighborhood Watch Program; these signs can now be seen throughout the senior community.

Although National Night Out was a community effort, two members of the Neighborhood Watch worked particularly hard to make the event happen.  Mike McBrien and Marian Vaughn secured donations from local businesses, and through community networking were able to have members of the Chesterfield Police Department, Health Department, and County Board of Supervisors attend the event.

Highlights of the night included a fish fry, grilled hotdogs, outdoor games and music.

This resident-planned event is a wonderful example of community building among residents.  Not only have residents come together to spread feelings of safety and security within their community, but through their collaboration they have also enhanced their sense of investment in the community.

The Community Garden at Randolph Place has provided a host of benefits to senior residents this summer. Aside from beautifying the property and being an accessible way for residents to get fresh air and exercise, the garden has yielded fresh vegetables for residents to eat.  It also offers a unique opportunity for residents to establish relationships with each other.  Ms. Daniel, a resident at Randolph Place, enjoys tending the garden on a regular basis.
