BHC RECEIVES GOLDEN HAMMER AWARD FOR BEST RESIDENTIAL RENOVATION

Better Housing Coalition acquired the Queen Anne-style home at 2008 Fairmount Avenue in order to restore it to a livable condition while retaining its unique historical character and ornate architectural details.  Built ca. 1895, the home had deteriorated over time and suffered extensive fire damage in the rear portion.  It now stands strong again, upgraded with green building technologies that contribute to healthy indoor air quality and energy efficiency.  Where facade details could not be repaired, they were recreated on site.

On November 12, the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods recognized the revitalization of 2008 Fairmount Avenue with the Golden Hammer Award for Best Residential Renovation.

The new home represents a continuation of BHC's efforts to eliminate blight on Fairmount Avenue, a main thoroughfare in the Church Hill neighborhood.  BHC hopes that the presence of this rehabilitated home will spark other rehabilitation efforts in the area and motivate residents to promote good stewardship of the block.

KICKOFF EVENT FOR CLAIBORNE SQUARE APARTMENTS PROMOTES CHANGE IN PETERSBURG
On Sunday, November 22, nearly 150 people came together to celebrate the coming of the Claiborne Square Apartments.  In partnership with the Restoration of Petersburg CDC, Better Housing Coalition will begin construction on this affordable, eco-friendly senior community early next year.  The new community will feature 34 one-bedroom and 13 two-bedroom apartments with rents starting as low as $500 a month.  It is also anticipated to spark additional transformation throughout Petersburg.

BHC President/CEO T.K. Somanath speaks to the crowd

The kickoff event was held at the future site of the Claiborne Square Apartments, adjacent to Tabernacle Baptist Church.  Mayor Annie Mickens, City Manager David Canada, and Reverend Robert Diggs of Tabnernacle, who were among the panel of guest speakers, acknowledged the apartments as a critical step to removing blight in the surrounding neighborhoods and improving the quality of life for people living in the city.  Visit www.betterhousingcoalition.org for updates on the community's development.
