BHC AND PETERSBURG CDC PARTNER FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CLAIBORNE SQUARE APARTMENTS

Better Housing Coalition announces an initiatve in Petersburg. In partnership with the Restoration of Petersburg CDC, BHC will develop a new 3-story senior community at 506 Halifax Street.  The Claiborne Square Apartments will include 47 apartments in the main building and a cottage with four additional units.

The community will be certified under the EarthCraft Multifamily Program, adhering to strict requirements for energy efficiency and indoor air quality.  It will also incorporate green building technologies which go beyond EarthCraft requirements, such as solar hot water heaters.

Construction is expected to begin in January 2010.  Check www.betterhousingcoalition.org for updates.

RETROFITTING NEIGHBORHOODS TO ACCOMMODATE AGING POPULATIONS
Making Suburbia Move Livable, an article published by The Wall Street Journal on September 19, 2009, addresses the steps which elected officials, planners and architects in certain towns across the country are taking to create more compact communities.  Such communities are comprised of homes, offices, shops, resturaunts and entertainment conveniently located within walking distance of each other.  Their goal is to create "lifelong communities" that suit the needs of young and senior inhabitants alike.  Click here for the full story.

Better Housing Coalition is working to bring these retrofitting trends to Richmond.  In taking a holistic approach to revitalization, BHC develops communities that are mixed-use and mixed-income.  Each initiative is also strategically targeted to serve as a cataylist for additional transformation and the development of more amenities for residents.  For those without a means of transportation, this can significantly improve their quality of life.

SAVE THE DATE!
Thursday, March 25, 2010
Better Housing Coalition will once again honor the leaders of Greater Richmond at our second annual Anniversary Celebration and Leadership Awards Presentation on March 25, 2010, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

The 2009 celebration, held at Beckstoffer's lumber mill on Church Hill, drew upwards of 500 people and raised $55,000 to be invested in BHC communities.  Pat Asch, Reggie Gordon, Rachel Flynn, and Karl Bren were recognized as the Leadership Award recipients for 2009.  BHC is collaborating with the University of Richmond's Jepson School of Leadership Studies to determine the 2010 recipients.

2009 Leadership Awards designed by local artist Noah Scalin

BHC will hold the 2010 celebration along a tented street in Oak Summit at Goose Creek - our new revitalization initiative in the Blackwell community adjacent to historic Manchester.  Upon completion, 45 new eco-friendly affordable homes will enable individuals and families to live close to work and enjoy the amenities of urban life in a quiet, street-lined neighborhood.
