Holocaust Exhibit Opens at Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum
|
ABILENE, Kan. -
Eisenhower and the Righteous Cause: The Liberation of Europe, an
original exhibit of artifacts and photographs telling a powerful story of post
World War II Europe opened May 24. The exhibit will be on display through the
rest of the year in the Temporary Gallery of the Eisenhower Presidential Museum.
The Eisenhower and the Righteous Cause exhibit
examines the Holocaust, allied victory in Europe and the liberation of
concentration camps. It also shows the humanitarian challenge of supporting
displaced persons and enemy prisoners of war, removing Nazis from power in
Germany and pursuing justice in the Nuremburg trials.
"The Righteous
Cause exhibit is truly a powerful and ambitious exhibit that will have a
profound impact on our visitors," comments Karl Weissenbach, Director,
Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. "The curatorial staff, with
assistance from the National Archives in Washington, devoted considerable time
locating rare and unique artifacts," adds Weissenbach.
Artifacts of
particular interest include Nuremburg letters, Friedrich Kellner's
diary, the original Russian language version of the German surrender and
signed copies of Hitler's Mein Kampf.
Also on display will be concentration camp artifacts and gifts to Truman and
Eisenhower from survivors and displaced persons.
To supplement the
exhibit, the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum will host a teacher's
workshop, public programs and a film series. The best way to stay informed of
these events is to visit the web site at www.eisenhower.archives.gov or become a fan on

Just One.....It'll Be Done! Helping Preserve the T.C. Henry Barn
| Local service organizations have joined together to make improvements to the T.C. Henry barn in Old Abilene Town. Rotary, Lions, and Optimists Clubs are organizing a "work day" to paint the 1873 barn/carriage house.
Friday and Saturday, June 11, 12 are the dates set to accomplish this major fete. The organizations are asking for volunteer help to scrape and paint the structure. They are also looking for donations of paint brushes, caulking, safety glasses, and other supplies. If you can donate "just one" of anything, including time, please call the Chamber at 263-1770 or the CVB at 263-2231.
T. C. Henry planted the first five acre patch of Winter Wheat in Kansas....in secret. About July 1, 1871, he unveiled his five acres and foresaw the "bottoms" becoming productive in wheat production. Within four years, his success had turned the plains of Kansas into the nation's breadbasket. It seems the right thing to do in preserving the 137 year old barn!
