Our Patient Spotlight Dee Gregory ~ Gastric Bypass ~ Lost 177 lbs
From 375 lbs to 198lbs! Oh what a difference 177 pounds make. As I reflect back on my life before surgery it is difficult to imagine the quantity of medications that I was consuming on a daily basis and the poor quality of life I was living.
Each day was like bellying up to a buffet! I planned my life around medications. I actually had a calendar that was dedicated to my medication schedule. My kids were being denied a father who could be active in their lives such as sports and everyday activities that fathers and sons do. My doctors had recommended Gastric Bypass surgery to me but I denied needing it and was not very receptive to admitting that "I needed help"! However, after actually dying (I stopped breathing on two occasions, while sitting on the couch) I realized that if I didn't do something relatively quickly, I would not live much longer. One night at dinner I looked around the table and realized how many people were depending on me for guidance and survival: my five adopted children and my then wife of 23 years. I decided to have the procedure in April 2004. If I knew then what I know now i would have done it much earlier.

This Holiday Season Pay Attention to Your Mind
By Guest Columnist-Deacon Shoenberger, PhD
I love language. One of the great things about being human is the ability to create a total experience just by saying a few words. For example, if I hear someone say "The Giants won the World Series," in just a few seconds a whirlwind occurs. I feel happy - really happy. I remember the last out and I can see in my head the expression on my 65-year-old dad's face as he jumped around the living room like a kid. I can hear the shrieks of my mom and my wife - half excitement that something the men they love have wanted so badly for so long has finally happened and half relief that their evenings will no longer be dominated by Mike and Duane talking about whether Matt Cain is locating his changeup tonight or not. I smile. In the span of a few seconds, my thoughts, feelings, and behaviors have been influenced by six words and my day has totally changed.
While these words haven't yet lost their effect (and probably never will), there is also a flip side to language. More

Why Should You Exercise? By Curtis Smith, PA-C
There are numerous health benefits to increased physical activity and exercise. The body of scientific data demonstrating these positive effects grows almost daily. In fact, it's so important to be active and achieve or maintain a healthy weight that government agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine have developed and support the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. In order to put these guidelines into practice for yourself, I think it's important to understand some essential concepts like health benefits, physical activity, and exercise. Did you know that regular physical activity reduces your risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular (heart and lung) disease? Through regular exercise, you can strengthen bones and reduce your risk of falling and hip fracture. If you haven't decided why exercise is a good idea for you, see the table of benefits at the end of this article. More

Tip and Goal of the Month By Kristine Shoenberger, MS, RD
Tip of the Month:
Just say NO to unplanned, unexpected holiday treats at the office, a friend's house, anywhere.
Whether or not you are planning to have foods your normally don't eat on Christmas and/or a party, make a plan to just say NO to all other treat "opportunities" to avoid extra, unplanned calories. It can be a slippery slope if you start saying yes to foods just because it is the holidays.
Goal for the Month:
Despite the busy holiday season, make a goal to increase your exercise (by time or intensity) to help prevent any holiday weight gain.
Some extra calories may be unavoidable during the holidays- winter foods are heavier, pot lucks and parties are more frequent, and the early nightfall can encourage staying in and eating as opposed to getting out and walking. This time of year is also a busy time, but make a goal this December to exercise more, not less, to beat the holiday weight gain cycle. If you can't find more time for exercise, then increase your intensity- get that heart beating faster- for a similar calorie burning effect.
