Rainwater often pools in driveways and backyards, causing inconveniences and an unsightly mess. Most homeowners don't realize that it can also negatively affect the environment due to the pollutants carried by stormwater runoff.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes the use of permeable pavers as a preferred method for reducing stormwater runoff volume, rate, and pollutants.

Permeable pavers from the Belgard Environmental Collection filter impurities before percolating water back down and into the community aquifer.

In addition, a self-sustaining home irrigation system can be easily created by adding an underground cistern and a pump, making permeable pavers the ultimate eco-friendly driveway or patio surface.

SEASONAL LIGHTING TIPS

Lanscape Lighting

If your landscape lighting seems too bright this time of year, it could be because light reflects more harshly off of snow. Consider using lower watt bulbs during the winter months to create a feeling of warmth. Experiment with 20-watt bulbs, which are compatible with most light fixtures. Another winter tip is to consider lighting trees. A lighted tree will appear closer, making you feel more connected to your garden as you view it from indoors during the colder months.

Go Blue MakeoverGo Blue! Blue Community Makeover

When Diamond Lake of Minneapolis, MN, received an "F" water quality rating, residents decided to take matters into their own hands, creating a program that became known as the Blue Community Makeover™. With the help of two local non-profit groups and Tina Plant of Hedberg Landscaping & Masonry Supplies, the group developed a total of 34 residential and two commerical makeover projects that collectively garnered over $224,000 in grand funds, defraying nearly half of the costs for the improvements.

"We wanted to do a play on the 'go green' theme that was specific to reducing stormwater runoff and cleaning up the lake," says Plant. " 'Go Blue!' became our rally cry, and residents were proud to display signs in their yards to show they were part of the project."

In addition to raingardens and water collection and recycling systems, nearly 11,000 square feet of permeable pavers were installed, including a combination of pavers from the Belgard Environmental Collection. The goal of the project is to reduce direct stormwater runoff into Diamond Lake by 1.5 million gallons each year.
