Got A Question? Ask It!

Insurance Policy

Knowing What to Ask When Buying an Insurance Policy is Crucial.

Insurance isn't something that the general public usually has an in-depth understanding of, but most of us do carry some type of insurance coverage. You know that you have to have it in many instances, you know you have to spend money each year on premiums that may go up or down, and you expect to receive a big stack of paper referred to as a 'policy' in the mail (that may be immediately stored away with those of years past.) However, it pays to have a little 'know how' about insurance when buying your auto, home, renters, life, or any other insurance policy.

If you've ever filed a claim yourself, you might have a better idea of why you should have insurance. Disasters and accidents can become expensive. Very expensive. Thus insurance coverage is often required as a necessity by law for a reason - if you have a registered automobile, own a mortgaged home, or own a business property with tenants, for instance. Why?

Remodeling?

Remodel blueprint

Tell Your Insurance Agent!

A major home renovation is often a complex undertaking. Going through the motions of finding contractors, choosing materials, browsing design concepts, and securing financing (in some cases) seems like a laundry list of tasks. But, have you ever considered that one of the first steps you should take is to tell your insurance agent?

Remodeling your home can have both positive and adverse effects on your policy, but hesitating to tell your agent could leave you in a heap of trouble in the event of a claim. During a remodel, the risks are not the same as simply living in the home, so it is true that you may experience an increase in insurance costs during construction. However, many standard homeowners policies will prohibit the payment of claims if they occur while the home is under construction. Even still, there is a bright side. Keeping your agent informed during a remodel could lead to a break on your bill once construction is complete if your carrier gives premium credits for newly replaced roofs, plumbing, heating systems, or electrical equipment in the home.

Remember, in all cases, honesty is the best policy!
