What would you say is your most valuable asset?

CrutchesIf you really think about it, your most valuable asset is not your home, your business or your investment portfolio. Your most valuable asset is your ability to earn an income. It's something that we all take for granted yet it is what makes everything else possible.

Something to think about...

When you're healthy and working, it's hard to imagine being disabled by injury or illness. But it can happen. In fact:
  • One in 3 working Americans will become disabled for 90 days or more before age 65
  • The average disability absence is 2 ½ years
  • More than 80% of working Americans don't have disability income insurance or aren't covered adequately
You insure your home, autos and business property - are you taking as much care in protecting your income? Government programs such as TDI and Social Security are hard to qualify for and provide only limited benefits. Workers' Compensation is only for job related injuries. What if you became sick and couldn't work for months - or years?

Plan ahead to help protect your lifestyle. Then relax.

We can help you find a Disability Income Insurance policy that;
  • Provides monthly income to help maintain your standard of living
  • Is customized to fit your particular situation
  • Helps you maintain dignity and independence without burdening others
  • Helps keep your financial dreams and goals for the future intact

Snow Shovel

Here are some smart snow shoveling tips courtesy of the Colorado Spine Institute;
  1. If you experience pain of any kind, stop immediately and seek assistance
  2. Choose a shovel that is right for you
    - A curved handle helps keep your back straighter
    - Choose a shovel with a plastic blade - these tend to be lighter than metal
    - Smaller blades can keep you from trying to lift too much snow
    - The handle length is correct when you can slightly bend your knees, flex your back 10 degrees or less, and hold the shovel comfortably in your hand at the start of the "shoveling stroke"
  3. Push the snow, don't lift it. Pushing puts far less stress on the spine than lifting.
  4. Be sure your muscles are warm before you start shoveling.
  5. When you grip the shovel, make sure that your hands are at least 12 inches apart. This will increase your leverage and reduce the strain on your body.
  6. Technique is important. Bend your knees and keep your back straight. Lift with your legs. Scoop small amounts of snow and walk to where you want to dump it.
  7. Never throw snow over your shoulder.
  8. Remember that wet snow can be very heavy. One full shovel load can weigh up to 25 pounds!
  9. Pace yourself by taking frequent breaks to gently stretch your back, arms and legs.
  10. For those of us who are able bodied, it is always worth remembering neighbors on your block who might not be able to remove the snow from their sidewalks. A few minutes of help can make a world of difference to the well being of a less able bodied person as well as make you a better neighbor!
