Name Tags Need Names We currently have a huge surplus of name tags with no names on them. You don't have to be a member of our congregation to wear one of these beautifully crafted tags. Whether you're a member, friend, visitor, or have an old blurry tag, just ask one of the greeters for a form, fill it out, and turn it in to a greeter. Then in a week or two you should find your new tag hanging on the wall.

Interim Minister's Column
Words of Joy
If we could distill our liberal religious tradition down into one word, one likely candidate would be the word "freedom." In our Unitarian Universalist congregations, we offer freedom from creeds and dogma, so that we can be individually free to make up our own minds about religious questions. We also want freedom for ourselves and all people-freedom from poverty and oppression, from fear and discrimination, from a religious tyranny that seeks to impose a particular set of beliefs and values on everyone. We Unitarian Universalists cherish the freedom to speak out, to express ourselves, to dissent. Fortunately, we enjoy religious freedom in this country, thanks in large part to early visionary Unitarians and Universalists like Thomas Jefferson. John Adams, and Universalist physician Benjamin Rush-a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
We need to remember that, within our own religious institution, our freedom is not free--it has a price. In order to carry on the legacy of individual religious freedom that our religious forebears struggled for, Mountain Vista Unitarian Universalist Congregation needs the support of everyone involved in this religious community--support with your time, your talents, and your treasure. As you think about the friendships, the fellowship and the freedom that this congregation offers, you may find that you want to support it as fully as you can.
The late UU minister John Wolf expressed some of the reasons why we want to support a Unitarian Universalist congregation:
You want to support it because it has a free pulpit. Because you can hear ideas expressed there which could cost any other minister his or her job. You want to support it because it is a place where children can come without being saddled with guilt or terrified of some 'celestial peeping-tom,' where they can learn that religion is for joy, for comfort, for gratitude and love...You want to support a Unitarian Universalist church because it is more concerned with human beings than with dogmas. Because it searches for the holy, rather than dwelling on the depraved...You want to support a Unitarian Universalist church because it can laugh...You want to support it because it insults neither your intelligence nor your conscience, and because it calls you to worship what is truly worthy of your sacrifice.
For these and so many other reasons, we who enjoy this great heritage of religious freedom need to support our religious communities as generously as we can, so that we can continue to sustain vital and healthy UU congregations that embody our values, care for and serve our members, and bring our message to the larger world.

Activities and Events
Sunday Morning Book Group The Sunday Morning Book Group has chosen its next book. Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution, by Nick Lane Paperback: $9.82 at Amazon.com Winner of the 2010 Royal Society Prize for Science Books Powerful new research methods are providing fresh and vivid insights into the makeup of life. Comparing gene sequences, examining the atomic structure of proteins and looking into the geochemistry of rocks have all helped to explain creation and evolution in more detail than ever before. Nick Lane uses the full extent of this new knowledge to describe the ten greatest inventions of life, including DNA, sex, sight and consciousness, based on their historical impact, role in living organisms today and relevance to current controversies. Lane also explains how these findings have come about, and the extent to which they can be relied upon. The result is a vivid, gripping and lucid account of the ingenuity of nature, and a book which is essential for anyone who has wondered at how we came to be here. They will start discussing the first~50 pages on November 6. They meet in the Goldblatt Building at 8:30 on Sunday mornings before the service. Come one, come all. UU Gateway Update
At UUCNWT we have set up six computers that are available for education and training programs, and have repaired and updated two more. Our plan is to use these for technology workshops for youth and adults. Courses are being created in web design, film editing and production, conferencing, YouTube, Facebook, and desktop publishing. This could be a way to raise funds for our congregation.
Since there seems to be a shortage of young people (millennium generation, those from 18 to 29 years of age in our congregation (we have only 2), we feel that these technological workshops and social networking will attract more of them.
Our own teens are engaged in filming, editing, and producing a documentary on immigration, with the intention of showing it at GA next June.
We are working with Sandy Weir, Director of the Arizona Immigration Ministry, who is a member of the UU Church of Phoenix. We've been using GoToMeeting software for conferencing. Two statewide video conferences are planned to take place during the next three months. We've been using the conferencing software in-house also, to show members how to use our congregational website. John has also been able to hold video editing classes on line. There will be more of these in the future.
The UU Gateway grant was $5,000, with an additional challenge grant if we could raise $5,000 in matching funds. To date, we have been able to raise $1,000 in contributions from the UUCT and from some of our own congregation members, and have received $1,000 in matching funds. That leaves $4,000 still available until Dec. 31, 2011. Contributions must be in increments of $500.
For an investment of $1,000, we could set up a low-cost media center to link any church with other UU churches in Arizona. Another $1,000 would come from the challenge grant. Total cost would be $2,000 for a computer, a projection system, a large drop-down screen, and a web camera. So if we could get 4 other congregations to contribute $1,000 each, we could establish a whole state-wide network. Now is an ideal time to make this investment, with the Justice GA coming in June and the state-wide focus on immigration issues. Congregations could show videos on site, record sermons, show Power Point presentations, conduct workshops, and do conferencing between large audiences. The system is up and running at UUCNWT. The money is available. All you have to do is ask-and supply $1,000. For more information, call John Fleming at (520) 888-7059.

November 27, 2011 "Bringing Justice to Phoenix"

Carolyn Saunders will present a sermon about the upcoming General Assembly in Phoenix in June 2012. Justice GA 2012 will be unlike any other General Assembly. It is a commitment Unitarian Universalists have made to respond to one of the greatest moral issues of our time. But it is first and foremost a religious gathering. You are invited to be there to bear witness, to stand on the side of love and to grow in spirit as well as serve the cause of justice. Come to hear more and get inspired to join us in Phoenix next year! Christiane Heyde is Worship Associate.
Carolyn Saunders is a member and financial secretary of the UU Church of Tucson, vice president of the Pacific Southwest District Board of Trustees, and the District Coordinator for GA 2012. She and her husband, Bruce, have lived in Tucson for the past 12 years.
