Volunteering for Justice GA

Justice GA 2012 will be unlike any other. All aspects of GA from the Exhibit Hall to the Service projects will be focused on justice and human rights. One way you can be part of this historic moment is to attend as a volunteer.

Coordinators for the GA Volunteer Committee sub-committees are needed by November 15 to attend a meeting in December. There are 4 of these position open and these coordinators have all expenses paid for GA.

Other volunteers who will be members of the sub-committees will apply online in March, 2012. Approximately 200 of these volunteers are needed.

The General Assembly (GA) Volunteer Committee provides GA registration in exchange for volunteer work at GA. Adult volunteers are required to contribute 24 hours. Youth (grades 9-12) volunteers and those who qualify for reduced registration rates are required to contribute 14 hours.

Applications will be available on the UUA website March 1 and are due no later than March 31. For more information, contact Carolyn Saunders, 299-3854, c_saunders1@msn.com or see the Volunteer Brochure available

Name Tags Need Names

We currently have a huge surplus of name tags with no names on them. You don't have to be a member of our congregation to wear one of these beautifully crafted tags. Whether you're a member, friend, visitor, or have an old blurry tag, just ask one of the greeters for a form, fill it out, and turn it in to a greeter. Then in a week or two you should find your new tag hanging on the wall.

The show will be held on Saturday, November 12th at 7 pm.

Diary of a Crazy Gardner

By Alberta Gunther

Dateline: October

I must be loco. Only a crazy person would keep planting things that didn't come up the last time I planted them. But I never claimed to be smart. In the front I have my salad garden. The radishes are already coming up and I've good luck in the past with lettuce. That said I again planted green onions. I have never had them grow large enough to eat. That isn't all bad since I never eat them but Don likes them.

I have redug the back garden adding compost and leaves. I'll plant either tomorrow of the next day. I'm going to try spinach, bush beans, and peas.

On a related subject I would look kindly on anyone who came by Nov. 4 & 5 to water the front. I'll have the back on the watering system. On an unrelated subject, spell check doesn't like the word redug. Tough! It stays in. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I need some good luck for all that digging.

Aluminum Cans Needed!

Please bring your empty aluminum cans to church and place in the special bin. The price of aluminum is currently 81 cents a pound. Proceeds from cans go to the Camp de Benneville Pines Scholarship Fund. Thank you to Emily Ricketts for sponsoring this worthwhile project.

UU Wine Country Tours

This is the sixth year that our little UU Fellowship in Napa, CA. has depended upon the kindness of strangers to move closer to our goal of moving from rented space to a home of our own. We are doing this by conducting "Wine Country Excursions," inviting UUs from across the nation to stay in our homes and tour the Napa Valley, tasting wines,
enjoying beautiful scenery, art and history. The proceeds from this enterprise go to the building fund. We have made substantial progress but still have some distance to go.
We hope you will assist us. For more information, contact Tom Wilson at 2wilsons1dog@comcast.net

Soups, Sandwiches, and Sweets October 16

Please come join us this Sunday for food and fellowship after the service. We will have a buffet luncheon, proceeds of which will benefit our youth going to Camp de Benneville Pines or GA 2012. If you cannot afford the $5 donation. please join is anyway. The more the merrier!

If you are able and willing to help we could use soups, sandwich makings, deserts, chips and drinks to serve. Let us know at UUSybelle@gmail.com or Larabuggy3@gmail.com
Hope to see you all there!

Bookaholics Unanimous October 26

Freedom by Jonathan Franzen has been anticipated, read, reviewed, compared, contrasted, sliced, and diced since word of its existence leaked out years ago. Does it live up to the hype? Most readers think so. You're in good hands with Franzen, who obviously loves his characters, flawed though they might be. Stay with the Berglunds and their family and friends, and you'll bump up against Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, Rednecks and city slickers, cranky eco-nuts and vile corrupt polluting Cheney cronies. Get the idea? It's worth the ride.

Two more great reads, good friends, are on the docket for November 16th: The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls. Literally thousands of readers rated both books with 4 1/2 stars out of five....rare praise for two memoirs. Enjoy the pleasure of knowing you have good stuff awaiting your perusal.....early holiday gifts from our readers to you.

Be a Buddy In Action

The Membership Team is very excited about our new Buddy Program and is now asking for members to step forward to be a Buddy to a new person of the congregation.

Hi, this is Steve McGeeney. Together with my lovely wife, Tandra Goodwin, we get to co-facilitate the new Buddy Program.

When you volunteer as a Buddy you get to be a liaison between a new person and our congregation. You get to enthusiastically welcome the new person and introduce her/him around to others. You also, of course, get to communicate about the many wonderful aspects of this place. You may also get to discuss Unitarian Universalism. Best of all, you get to know someone new.

The New Person gets a giant head start in learning what we're about and becoming more comfortable here.

To find out more about the Buddy Program, please email us at steveandtandra@q.com. Or feel free to call us at 572-4741.

Thank You from Poz Cafe!

poz cafe

With your help from the August "woven basket" contribution, we served 147 people at Poz Cafe in September! This number includes people living with HIV and their guests, congregational volunteers, TIHAN volunteers, and four TIHAN staff. We distributed 75 care packages, bags filled with donated toiletry items for our CarePartners living with HIV/ AIDS. We also gave out lots of bingo prizes and raffle prizes to our CarePartners.

And of course we can't forget the great meal and the hugs and the "safe space" that you help create at Poz Cafe every month where our clients can meet others living with HIV, increase their social support, and know that there are caring people from faith communities who welcome them and are working to end the stigma that still exists. Many Care Partners also took home leftovers for a second delicious meal.

Special appreciation to our own very hard-working volunteers: Christiane Heyde, Catalina Hall, Tandra and Steve Goodwin, Martha and Larry Casiotta, and Pat Desai.

Also many many thanks for the donation of toiletries and paper products from the congregation.

Thanksgiving Feast at MVUU

November 24 at 2 pm we will have a feast to celebrate the joy of living.
We will offer our thanks for the good things in our life, especially our UU fellowship.

The event will be open to all of you, and please invite friends. If weather is good, it will be outdoors. If not, it will be in the Goldblatt Building.

We will provide two roasted turkeys. If the response is large, we may call on you for more turkeys.

In order for it to come together properly please send an email to me indicating:

1. How many people will be in your party?
2. What you are bringing: side dish, salad, dessert, (including vegetarian dishes).
3. Are you willing to work on set up? Clean up?

When we get your responses we will balance out the menu offerings and make adjustments.

Please bring your own beverage, plates and tableware, and please bring a gift of several non-perishable food items, or a toiletry care package to be given to those in need.

Please contact Hobie Denney at hobied@gmail.com or 253-857-5171

Update on MVUU'S 2011 Holiday Giving Projects***

WHEN? Sundays after church, 11:30-12:45, November 6 to December 11, 2011

WHERE? At a table set up outside the Goldblatt Building

1. Alternative Gifts International (AGI)
MVUU is in its third year we of support for AGI, a small non-profit charity that is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year. They are sponsoring 35 hand-chosen agencies
that give people around the world "gifts inspiring change" through donations of our financial support. Categories include Hunger, Education, Gender Equality, Child Mortality, Maternal Health, Medical Services, Environmental Sustainability, and others. When you choose the exact project to support, you can be assured that your donation
will go there.

Stop by our table on November 6 to December 11 and look at our catalogs. Volunteers will be happy to guide you through the purchasing process. The real beauty of AGI's program is that you can give $1 on up, meaning that MV's children, youth, and all adults can experience the joy of reaching out to others!

2. "Youth On Their Own" (YOTO)
Their Mission is "to support the high school graduation and continued success of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs, and guidance." For 26 years, YOTO has been serving eligible teens ("without stable, permanent homes and parental involvement") through referrals by students' school counselors.

3. Teresa, the Executive Director, has decided to streamline and equalize donations by asking donors to purchase individual
*** $10 gift cards from TARGET, FRY'S, SAFEWAY, McDONALD'S, SUBWAY, BURGER KING or WALMART.

Deadline: Sunday, November 27,
Return gift cards to Debbie of Jim Gessaman at church.
We at MVUU can do our part to help some of the 500 students that depend on YOTO for a happy holiday.

Your outreach is a Gift of Peace, sharing that comes from your abundance to world neighbors in order to create-person by person-a more peaceful, equitable global community.

Volunteer of the Month

Who takes charge of the coffee every Sunday, making sure it gets made, that it gets served, that the urns are covered to keep warm, that the electricity is up to the job of keeping it hot? Who manages the annual rummage sale? Who is a major organizer of the service auction and the book sale? Catalina Hall, that's who.

Catalina is a take-charge kind of person. She organizes. She gets things done. She never seems to run out of energy. In addition to the things mentioned above, she also serves on the Buildings & Grounds Committee and takes notes at its meetings, she helps at the Poz Café, she participates in craft sessions, and does lots of other things behind the scenes. She was a mentor last spring for Coming of Age. She can always be counted on to demonstrate and teach belly dancing, a passion of hers, for events or for the kids in RE.

What an amazing person! We are really lucky to have her in our congregation.

Statement From Board of Trustees and Ministerial Search Committee
Congregational Message

Our MVUU Board of Trustees will call a congregational meeting for members and friends on a date in the near future to review the current budget and discuss strategies for the ongoing ministerial search process. At this time, no decisions have been made regarding our budget and current financial situation. That is why we are calling a congregational meeting. The Ministerial Search Committee will partner with the Board for that meeting.

Meanwhile, the Board urges everyone to attend the Beyond Categorical Thinking Workshop from noon until 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 23. That workshop will help us all gain tools and insights to help the success of our community and welcome a new minister in August 2012.

Sunday Services for October

Association Sunday

October 16, 2011

"""Parson Means Person: Reflections on the Ministry"

Rev. Joy Atkinson

As the search for a settled minister continues at Mountain Vista UU, our interim minister will explore some aspects of ministers and ministry, and the multiple roles required of ministers who serve our congregations. This Sunday is designated Association Sunday, and a special collection for the UUA to support programs that promote excellence in ministries in our Association will be taken during the service.

October 23, 2011
"Beyond Categorical Thinking"
Deb Hillgartner and Gil Guerrero

"Will the new minister hear me? Will my concerns and needs be met? Will the minister understand what I'm living with? How will the community respond to our minister?'

In answering these questions, a picture of the "ideal minister" (categorized by age, gender, gender identity, nationality, physical ability, race, and sexual orientation) comes to mind. With this picture in place, it can be easy to unintentionally exclude ministers who fall into certain categories. At times, as we get caught up in comparing candidates to our "picture," we can even forget what it is we hoped for in a minister. The Beyond Categorical Thinking program is designed to promote inclusive thinking and help prevent unfair discrimination in the search process for a new minister.

Co-facilitators Deb Hillgartner and Gil Guerrero from the UUA Transitions office will share their personal perspectives on the experience of identity, and how our understanding of identities impacts the ministerial search. After worship, we encourage everyone to attend their workshop entitled "Beyond Categorical Thinking" as we learn about the way that our personal experiences and biases can hinder us from finding the best minister for our congregation. Barbara Gates is Worship Associate. The choir will sing.

Halloween/ El Dia De Los Muertos Service
October 30, 2011
"Sympathy for the Devil"
Rev. Joy Atkinson

We Unitarian Universalists have long rejected the idea of hell and a literal devil figure, but what might the "devil" in human experience symbolize? The sermon will explore aspects of good and evil in human experience. We will also observe the Day of the Dead traditions of Central and South America with an altar, to which you are invited to bring pictures of loved ones who have died. Children of all ages, and adults too if they like, are invited to come in Halloween costumes.

All members who have joined the congregation since the last formal recognition will be recognized during the service, as well as those who were not able to attend on that occasion. Irene Sattinger is Worship Associate.
