 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Djamel Mahasano Aggee

Aggee

It's a great joy that I've found something new here at UCBC. At the launch of the academic year, I was amazed that [all of us new students] were welcomed [warmly] by returning students. UCBC is really a university which transforms people to transform. If we were in a different Congolese university, we would be teased by the returning students. What I noticed as most impressive was the introduction, the collaboration, and the friendship among students and staff members of UCBC. To be frank, there is community life in this Christian institution.

SMALL MIRACLES

In the midst of the devastating war that raged in eastern D.R. Congo (DRC) from 1998 to 2003, the local church was often the only haven left available to the millions of internally displaced people who had to flee their homes because of the violence. Churches swelled with those seeking refuge, and thisPastors left pastors and other leaders completely overwhelmed, asking "How do we appropriately respond to this challenge?"  "How do we begin to minister to these people?" "We never received training for this kind of situation!"

Congo Initiative's Center for Church Renewal and Global Mission prepares the Congolese church to respond to today's challenges (and the aftermath of the past) by equipping Church leaders and lay Christians to be agents of restoration and renewal in the DRC. More than a nice-sounding mission statement, this vision and its realization is nothing short of a small miracle in a place that has known unimaginable suffering and hardship.

Movie and Popcorn, or Democracy and Education?

Our campaign to raise $12,000 to provide sufficient power to CI-UCBC's new radio station is well underway! With your help, we are now more than halfway toward our goal of $7,000 (to match the $5,000 contribution already committed). Thank you to those of you who have generously invested your resources!

If you have not yet made a contribution, it's not too late! Forego the movie and popcorn and donate your $25 today to help us complete this goal quickly so that the radio station will be fully powered to provide education to the local population in preparation for the much-anticipated national elections later next month.

Kasalis in the U.S.

David and Kaswera Kasali are currently traveling around the US, visiting with friends and partners of Congo Initiative. Their journey so far has taken them to San Antonio, Phoenix and South Carolina, with upcoming stops in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and North Carolina. We are grateful for their presence and are hopeful that new relationships will be forged and old ones renewed.

One of our Board members recently wrote: Having lived and worked in Africa for over 30 years, I can truly say that I have never been anywhere in Africa that was so full of hope, excitement and potential for transformation. . . .I am honored to be part of an authentic partnership with the Congo board and part of a real transformative organization.
