Dear Members and Friends,
As our region's most colorful season approaches, we want to share news from this peak time for plant conservation and for planting natives. Begin "Back-to-school" season with our new fall lineup of native plant educational programs. Nasami Farm has reopened for the season with lots of progress on the new Native Plant Center and the BIG BUGS exhibit continues at Garden in the Woods amid fall's fruits and berries. And finally, celebrate the fall baseball season with one of the sports rising stars: enjoy a special fundraising opportunity for the Society with Dustin Pedroia this month. Enjoy! |

FALL PLANTING SEASON
It is a happy coincidence that some of the most glorious fall foliage and berries can be had on some of the easiest native New England shrubs to grow, and there are some for every growing condition. Despite the unappealing name, chokeberries make a delicious and healthful traditional jam for humans. Birds and chipmunks take them straight. Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) has purplish leaves in fall and purple-black berries. A. arbutifolia (red chokeberry) has blazing red and orange leaves and red berries. Read more here about Retail Operations Director Nicola Cataldo's picks. |
LIP GRANT FOR CONSERVATION
The Society received a grant of approximately $9,000 from the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife's Landowner Incentive (LIP) Program to conduct habitat management at our Nasami Farm and Sanctuary for the benefit of rare and at-risk fauna like foraging wood turtles, bobolink, and sharp-shinned hawks. Please help to fulfill that grant and participate in our Conservation Volunteer Days at Nasami Farm September 24-26 and/or October 2-3. We'll train you--no experience necessary. Contact John Burns at jburns@newenglandwild.org or 508--877-7630 x 3204. Read more about the LIP Grant.

| NASAMI FARM NEWS + GROWING CONNECTIONS
Be sure to include a Nasami visit in your fall plans. Our Whately, MA farm is open for the fall season Thurs - Sun through October 5. Free demos take place Sundays at 1 pm. This Sunday, September 14, learn to plant trees the right way with Dr. Greg Lowenberg. This is a very exciting time for New England Wild Flower Society and the new Native Plant Center at Nasami. Through your generosity to the "Growing Connections" capital campaign, the Center's foundation has been poured, the barn improved, and we look forward to sharing this very GREEN future with you. Read all about our building news, bald eagles, campaign opportunities, and great new plants. |
| GOODBYE TO A FAITHFUL FRIEND
