Dear Members and Friends,

This is a very exciting time for New England Wild Flower Society and Nasami Farm.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Native Plant Center at Nasami Farm was held on June 19. The foundation of the new Center has been poured and we can already visualize the future building designed for LEED-certification. The foundation improvements to our beautiful antique barn are complete. Contrasting the traditional building with the new building underscores the Society's mission -- preserving our native plant heritage together with our shared investment in a green future through conservation, horticulture, and education.
GROWING CONNECTIONS

Stop by and see the progress on the Native Plant Center. We appreciate all those who have already contributed to Growing Connections, the Campaign for New England Wild Flower Society. With $2.6 million raised, we are at 70% of our goal of Native Plant Center Foundation$3.8 million -- well on our way to making the multi-use farm building and gateway to the Sanctuary a reality. Contact Dianne Butt, Director of Development, at 508-877-7630 x 3104 to make a gift. For more information, click here.
NURSERY OPENS SEPTEMBER 4 FOR FALL SEASON

All the rain has made the Pioneer Valley extra lush, and we have the best crop ever of new and favorite perennials, trees, shrubs, grasses, vines, sedges, and ferns -- more than 430 species for fall. We reopen Thursday, September 4 at 10 a.m. and hope to see you there.
NEW PLANTS FOR FALL 2008

As you know, fall is the perfect time to plant trees, shrubs, and vines in the Pioneer Valley. New this year is Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Prince William' (Prince William serviceberry) with brilliant fall color, and the Lonicera involucrata (twinberry honeysuckle), a non-invasive native shrub species collected by Bill Cullina on his honeymoon. It has large lush dark green foliage and unusual russet and yellow flowers. For perennials and grasses, try the new Asarum 'Eco Dark Heartlet' (wild ginger). Evergreen even in the colder parts of our valley, this ginger has deep colored foliage contrasting with silvery veination. This year, try the Polypodium virginianum (polypody fern) newly available and a great evergreen fern, perfect for walls, walkway edges, and dense-to-dappled shady areas.
STAFF FAVORITES

Pitcher Plant by Bill CullinaThis year, take advantage of a great fall crop of staff favorites. We have six varieties of Sarracenia spp (pitcher plants). Contrary to popular belief, they are not just for the bog but are easy to grow in evenly moist regular garden soil, or in containers!  These look gorgeous
with Iris versicolor (blue flag iris), Chamaedaphne calyculata (leatherleaf), and Juncus effusus 'Unicorn' (corkscrew sedge) -- all available now.
NEW USES FOR WILDFLOWERS

Read seasonal gardening and horticulture tips by Society staff, including information on green roofs, bog gardening, and rain gardens (including plant list suggestions). Visit examples using these eco-landscaping techniques at Garden in the Woods at Society headquarters in Framingham. If you plan an overnight stay you can get a very special room rate at our sponsor partners listed here

BALD EAGLES AND MORE

Our plants aren't the only wildlife getting attention. While Nasami Staff were potting up Comptonia (sweetferns), Nursery Director Ron Wik spotted a large bird in the distance Bald Eagleand as it came closer it displayed its white head and tail. A bald eagle!  It stayed nearby for a half hour and now returns frequently, much to the delight of observant customers.  A killdeer -- a ground-nesting shorebird -- has made its home in a pot of insect-eating Sarracenia flava. Nasami is a haven for much wildlife and we look forward to re-opening the sanctuary walking areas in 2009.

We look forward to seeing you this fall,
