EXCITING PLANTS IN THE NURSERY

Thanks for a grand opening nursery season at Nasami Farm and Garden in the Woods with our biggest opening weekend ever. Our nursery staff is particularly excited about these four treasures:

Adlumia fungosa We have not had this available for the past two years. Climbing fumitory looks like a vining version of a delicate white dicentra.

Gaylussacia brachycera

This ground cover is always in demand by savvy plant lovers. It's hard to find, and harder to propagate. It's in flower right now, berries will follow.

Camassia

Camassia esculenta 'Orion.' This new cultivar promises a new blue-violet version of the much-loved species flower.

For your woodland garden, Uvularia sessilifolia is a cherished favorite among native plant enthusiasts. Ours are just bursting bud now and they are lovely.

April 23, 2008

Dear Members and Friends,

New England Wild Flower Society celebrates the Earth every day, and this Saturday, April 26, we pull out all the stops at our annual Earth Day Celebration at Garden in the Woods. Come savor wildflower walks on the half hour, live animal shows, a superb selection of spring ephemerals in the nursery, and the spectacular emergence of spring.

EATING FOR CONSERVATION

The early invasive plant field season is here. In areas near Society headquarters, this is typically the time to harvest Polygonum cuspidatum, Japanese knotweed. This knotweed Japanese knotweedwreaks havoc on the environment but makes very tasty treats. Try these invasive plant dessert recipes from Russ Cohen, author, Society instructor, and expert forager by clicking here. Don't miss Russ at The Kitchen Garden Symposium, this Saturday, April 26 in Maine. Click here for more information.

AH, SPRING!

Trillium cuneatumEverything is unfolding quickly at Garden in the Woods.  Horticulture Director Scott LaFleur notes that the Erythronium americanum alba (American trout lily, white form), Trillium cuneatum (Whippoorwill flower), fabulous Dicentra species (squirrel corn, Dutchman's breeches, bleeding heart), Shortia galacifolia (Oconee bells), and Dirca palustris (leatherwood) are in full bloom.
