Greetings!
Are you a parent? Do you know a parent or a grandparent? Even if you don't have a biological child, I'd be interested in how you handle negative behavior... Are you familiar with the concept of REDIRECTING? I confess, I am a redirecting guru of sorts. But then, after four children and almost six grandchildren (next one arriving in November PTL!), I need to be in order to maintain any sane braincells I have left. Seriously!! Timing is extremely important when redirecting negative behavior. Three options are: in the moment, immediately after the fact or before the next occurrence... Let me share an example of redirecting immediately after the fact. This past week my youngest was struggling with a bout of anger while playing golf. (please let me know you deal with this in your children too and I'm not alone)While the anger was flowing I stepped back and observed his processing skills; when he settled, I stepped up and asked him if he was happy with the results he had. He said something like, "No, I wanted a better score, but I guess it wasn't mean't to be." "Why do you think you didn't play like you wanted?" I asked with a calm voice. Sammie proceeded to give me a plethora of reasons. When I asked if his anger had any influence he shrugged his shoulders, "I guess." "How does your stomach feel? Are you still angry? If your answer is yes, there is no need to guess son... it did!" "The question is, do you want the results to be different next time?" My eyes were looking in his. A moment of silence was followed by a willing "yes" from a spent young man receptive to my redirection. We talked and his countenance changed - PTL! I'm writing an article on this, will post when it's up. I'd love to hear your stories as well. How is God redirecting you this week? Like a loving Papa, He desires to be the biggest influencer in your life. Invite Him into your everyday and listen for His word then be willing to His redirection. Amen. Be encouraged this day, for God loves you beyond measure... arms open wide. Blessings... Linda |
