Tools & Trainings  for  Organic Church Movements

One of the important voices for the organic church movement has been Alan Hirsch.  This week, I came across a couple of quotes from his recent book that are worthy of passing on for your processing and encouragement:

"The problem is that most people see the church as an institution and not an organic movement (living system), in spite of the fact that the Bible is replete with organic images of church and kingdom (body, field, vine, soil, etc.)."  p. 253

A good reminder about how we see our churches.  Now secondly about movements, Hirsch says:

"Having Babies is Fun....each unit of church can be conceived as a pod filled with seeds: each church "pregnant" with other churches. And it is in following this impulse that the apostolic church extends itself....this is actually how all powerful movements start.  It begins with a group of people impassioned with a cause that reproduces itself through multiplication systems."   p. 139  The Forgotten Ways- Alan Hirsch

May these insights encourage you onward.  We are walking with you towards the multiplication of healthy disciples, leaders, churches and movements!

forgotten ways picAlan Hirsch is convinced that the inherited formulas for growing the Body of Christ do not work anymore. And rather than relying on slightly revised solutions from the past, he sees a vision of the future growth of the church coming about by harnessing the power of the early church, which grew from as few as 25,000 adherents in AD 100 to up to 20 million in AD 310. Such incredible growth is also being experienced today in the church in China and other parts of the world.

How do they do it? The Forgotten Ways explores the concept of Apostolic Genius as a way to understand what caused the church to expand at various times in history, interpreting it for use in our own time and place. From the theological underpinnings to the practical application, Hirsch takes the reader through this dynamic mixture of passion, prayer, and incarnational practice to rediscover the dormant potential of the modern church in the West.

Excuse Me While I Single-Handedly Neutralize Al-Qaeda
By Brant Hansen

Alan Hirsch, in his book, The Forgotten Ways, points out that Al-Qaeda is almost impossible to stop.  This is, in large part, due to the way its message works, and the way the work gets carried out.  And he's absolutely right.

So, in the service of national defense, I propose the following, in order to effectively neutralize the movement.  Let's get Al-Qaeda to...

1) Complexify the message

Right now, it's so simple, it can pass from one to the next, and be easily grasped by the uneducated, the young -- everyone.  This is dangerous, because it's highly contagious, and people on the street feel capable of enlisting others in the cause.

2) Construct a less "flat", more hierarchical structure

Currently, small, underground groups can move nimbly and autonomously, complicating efforts to thwart them.  A more regimented, stratified approach, where some members are left thinking, "I can't know enough to do anything" would bring the movement to a halt.
