Q:
Hi Troy:
I recently was diagnosed with tendinitis [De Quervains - sp?] in my right wrist with lesser symptoms in my left wrist. My Dr. highly suggested that I cut the weights for awhile since I had still been doing weights [without trying to bend my wrists, etc.]. I hope you do not mind that I ask - what can I do to keep my arms toned [without use of weights]
Thank you, Lynda
A:
Hi, not being a Dr. I have to advise that you listen to your MD. What I can tell you that Yoga, even in the standing postures where there is no weight on the arm, uses isometric contraction holding that has been proven to tighten, strengthen and tone without load bearing. According to Wikipedia: While dynamic exercises are slightly better than isometric exercises at enhancing the twitch force of a muscle, isometrics are significantly better than dynamic exercises at increasing maximal strength at the joint angle. Flexibility may be increased when isometrics are performed at joint range of motion extremes. These isometric contractions recruit muscle fibers that are often neglected in some dynamic exercises. For example, gymnasts are extremely strong at great ranges of motion through the practice of isometric holds. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isometric_exercise). So I recommend doing the standing yoga postures on my CD and holding them while tightening your arm muscles for 5 to 6 long breaths. An example would be Warrior II, stand facing the side of your mat, feet wider than shoulder width apart, turn right foot forward and left foot slightly pigeon toed in. Bend your right knee over the second toe, not past, drop the tail bone, press down through feet, extend through spine to crown of head. Lift the arms parallel to the floor, palms facing down, extend from finger to finger, lock the arm joints, then slightly relax the joints but keep the muscle tension in shoulder caps, front and back of arm and forearm. See if you can hold the muscle contraction in the abdominal, arms, legs and back, while you soften inside. Breath deeply in and out through your nose. Notice if the shoulders want to bunch up creating tension in your neck, then relax. Hold and breath as long as you can without struggle. Enjoy. You can order my CD or get it at one of my classes. Glad to help.

A friend of mine asked me these very good questions about my recent trip to India and I wanted to share them with everyone. I hope they are of interest to you. If you are inspired or can think of any questions related to your health and nutrition path, send them to me via email and I will answer the best I can: trainertroy@gmail.com
So...India. Lots of Lingams, Yoni's, too, I would imagine. So many Lingams and Shiva temples, they are all really a blur at this point. I had no idea such ancient places still were accessible to people. Temples that predate recorded history, an ancient trading port with Rome, just amazing. You really feel and see the effects of time on the planet.
Was it worth it? It changed my life and as was explained to me, expanded my circle of safety as Gurudev teaches, to include more that I feel safe with. I do not know about that analogy as to me it feels more like my ideas of what make me feel safe were destroyed and that what safety means was re defined.
Would you go again? All I could say when I was getting on the plane was, I will never come here again, and now all I want to do is go back to Bapuji's temple at Kiyavarohan for forty days, but not for awhile. I would like to be in that holy spot, there was one other Ashram in Pondicherry I would like to go to again and study, but I really want to see North India which is supposed to be so different. We were in the oldest part of India down south and not much has changed in eons.
What did it teach you personally?Very good questions. I think it taught me that I can feel comfortable with myself in situations I could never imagine and that makes me feel very secure about this Troy guy. I can take him just about anywhere. I remember in Mombai (New Delhi) I went for a walk all by myself on a busy street to a shopping district to look for shoes and went into the wrong store, asked for directions, went to the right store and argued over the price with the sales clerk in a very nice manner. I was so surprised at myself, especially since my taxi driver in another town had been attacked in front of my eyes, but that is another story. I learned that children can be happy anywhere in just about any conditions if they are allowed to love and laugh. I always see the childrens eyes and smiles every time I close my eyes. |
