In April, Executive Director, Kim Dabbs, and Advocacy Chair, Drew Buchholz, represented Michigan Youth Arts at the Arts Education Partnership Forum in Washington D.C..  The gathering was a unique opportunity to network with colleagues that represented alliances like ours at Michigan Youth Arts and served as a platform to learn about new and best practices from around the country.  As we prepare for the upcoming Michigan Youth Arts Policy Forum in August 2010, the AEP Forum offered perspective to grow this critical Michigan event and provide guidance in the upcoming year.

AEP Forum highlights:
Appearing together in a unique joint session at the AEP Forum last week, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman confirmed their support for a complete education that includes the arts. The addresses were part of the plenary session, "A Well-Rounded Education in the 21st Century," at the Partnership's National Forum on April 9 in Washington, DC. The meeting was the first public appearance of the two agency heads. The two leaders' remarks, while differing in details, expressed similar ideas: Secretary Duncan cited the power of arts learning to boost student achievement and improve college graduation, and noted, "arts education is essential to stimulating the creativity and innovation that will prove critical to young Americans competing in a global economy."  Chairman Landesman also portrayed the arts as crucial to student success: "The arts provide us with new ways of thinking, new ways to draw connections...and they help maintain our competitive edge by engendering innovation and creativity." The texts of the two speeches are available online (Secretary Duncan; Chairman Landesman).

Next week is officially Michigan Youth Arts Festival Week.  Join us in Kalamazoo, May 13-15 for exhibitions and performances featuring Michigan's most talented high school artists, and honoring our 2010 Educators of the Year.  Can't travel to Western Michigan?  We'll be webcasting several performances online, too.

The text of Governor Jennifer M. Granholm's proclamation reads:

Whereas, The arts are a vital part of our nation's history and culture, defining our past and preserving the present; and,

Whereas, As the birthplace of many nationally and internationally renowned artists, Michigan schools have been recognized among the best in the nation for arts education; and,

Whereas, Inclusion of the arts in education furthers the total development of our youth and increases the overall educational performance and creative workforce of the future by helping youth to understand and respect people of diverse populations and cultures; and,

Whereas, The Michigan Youth Arts Festival annually recognizes and brings together more than 1,000 of Michigan's best high school artists, authors, dancers, thespians and musicians for a week-long gala of exhibits, presentations and performances; and,

Whereas, The Michigan Youth Arts Festival is the only known multi-disciplinary festival that brings together all the arts for an extended showcase of Michigan's young artists and for a hands-on experience to cultivate, inspire and develop their skills;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of May 10, 2010, Youth Arts Week in Michigan.  Creativity and innovation are essential components for a well-rounded education for our youth.  I encourage the residents of this state to help their children explore the arts by engaging their interests in music, drawing, sculpting, photography and so much more.

Artserve LogocdpMichigan Cultural Data Project Launched

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Michigan Cultural Data Project (Michigan CDP), the first online management tool designed to strengthen arts and cultural organizations. This unique system will provide your organization with the tools necessary to analyze and benchmark your financial and organizational data. By participating in the Michigan CDP, you will be part of a successful and growing project that will allow the arts community as a whole to better articulate and provide evidence for the sector's assets and needs, as well as its contributions to the state and the country. The system will enable you to run reports on your organization, which you can use as one part of the grant application process to partnering funders and to make your case to board members, potential donors, advocates and policy makers.

Get started by visiting the Michigan CDP Web site www.miculturaldata.org today!

You can also register for free training sessions throughout Michigan.  ArtServe will host a brief policy and resources update meeting prior to each session.

MCACAMCACAPlan to attend the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Summit, June 22-23, 2010

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) will host a summit on June 22-23, 2010, in downtown Lansing, Michigan. This event - previously held annually - has been on hiatus since 2006 due to the severe, ongoing funding cuts to MCACA. The Council and Staff heeded the call for a return of this gathering from arts and cultural professionals, groups interested in Michigan's recovery, the arts education community, foundations, and others who understand the vital role of a healthy arts and culture industry.

artstock logoArtstock! offers a chance to demonstrate the key role of the arts in Michigan's present and future. Day one, "Taking Stock in the Arts" will have keynotes and sessions as well as a panel discussion with state and national leaders. Focused sessions serve individual artists, young professionals, art educators and art organization administrators. Plan to spend the night and engage in more discussions and networking while enjoying Lansing's Old Town and downtown Lansing galleries and restaurants. On day two, "Artstock!" takes place at the state Capitol Building lawn with performances, an art installation anyone can participate in, and a speaker.

The summit is not limited to the arts and culture field. We encourage all that have been touched by the arts in some way-and that is everyone-to come together to learn, share and enjoy.

Plan to attend on June 22-23, 2010. Registration is open, and space is limited. For more information, visit www.themedc.org/arts.

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs serves to encourage, develop and facilitate an enriched environment of artistic, creative and cultural activity in Michigan.
