The Plainsman: 2010 Season Opens Saturday
Head football coach Gene Chizik will begin his sophomore year at Auburn Saturday night. Chizik said he noticed a higher comfort level from year one to year two. "There
are some position guys that are new, but for the most part, a lot of
our football team has heard it two years in a row now," Chizik said. Chizik
said he couldn't put his finger on what will make the team better this
season, but he is pushing for consistency each week. "Again,
going back to last year, too many highs and too many lows," Chizik
said. "For us to be better, it's more along the level of when we were
playing at a high level. Those are the things that we've been stressing
since day one, and those are the things we're trying to get started
this Saturday." Click here to read more

Other Auburn News Of Interest
Auburn celebrates fall with school colors days and slogan: AUBURN. Love it. SHOW IT!
AUBURN - Auburn fans can show their true colors this fall beginning with College Colors Day on Friday, Sept. 3. All Auburn All Orange kicks off the next day, Sept. 4, for the Auburn vs. Arkansas State football game. And a third Auburn colors event, True Blue, is Sept. 18 for the Auburn vs. Clemson game.
College Colors Day, a national movement tied to the beginning of college football season, promotes higher education and celebrates the achievements, spirit and traditions of colleges and universities.
Other All Auburn All Orange events include: Auburn vs. Kansas State equestrian competition on Sept. 23; Auburn vs. Mississippi State soccer game on Sept. 24; Auburn vs. Arkansas volleyball game on Oct. 22; and Auburn vs. Georgia football game on Nov. 13.
For the football game against Clemson on Sept. 18, Auburn fans are encouraged to support the True Blue game by wearing their navy Auburn gear.
"Football, Fans and Feathers" Kicks Off Sept 3 for the 2010 Football Season
AUBURN - The Southeastern Raptor Center will again host its annual birds-in-flight raptor programs on Fridays before Auburn University home football games. "Football, Fans and Feathers" kicks off Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. CT in the 350-seat Edgar B. Carter Educational Amphitheater on Raptor Road off Shug Jordan Parkway. Other dates are Sept. 17 and 24; Oct. 1, 15 and 22; and Nov. 5 and 12.
During "Football, Fans and Feathers," visitors learn about the residents of the Southeastern Raptor Center. Hawks, falcons and eagles will be free-flown from flight towers allowing guests to see these raptors flying close. Admission is $5 each and registration is not required. Children under three are admitted free. Roadside signs mark the program's location on the day of each show. Raptor Road is a gravel road with a red gate off Shug Jordan Parkway just north of the Wire Road intersection.
All birds used in the programs are permanent residents that are non-releasable due to prior injuries or human imprinting. The Southeastern Raptor Center is part of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. The center's mission is to rehabilitate injured or orphaned raptors, and to educate the public.
Natl. Science Foundation taps Auburn researchers to study long-term impact of Gulf oil spill
AUBURN - Auburn researchers were recently awarded five National Science Foundation rapid response grants to study the environmental impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
While the obvious visual signs of the spill seem to be disappearing, the long-term aftereffects remain to be seen. Auburn has a long history of strong research in marine and coastal environments and these researchers are gathering critical information to support future policy and remediation efforts in response to the spill. Understanding what is happening to crude oil components and dispersants, and their impact on water quality, sediments and seafood, along with the overall coastal ecosystem, is critical to understanding the long-term impacts of the spill on the Gulf Coast economy and residents.
An NSF Major Research Instrumentation, or MRI, grant will allow for the development of a laboratory facility where environmental engineering researchers Prabhakar Clement, Clifford Lange, Ah Jeong Son and Dongye Zhao from Auburn's Samuel Ginn College of Engineering will characterize dispersant-mixed crude oil contaminants in various soil-water environments.
"The primary focus of our effort is to understand the long-term fate and transport of the dispersant-mixed crude oil in soil-water systems under various marine environments," Clement said. "Additionally, we will pursue opportunities to develop novel analytical methods to test oil-contaminated marine species, which will include seafood samples."
A second MRI grant awarded to biological sciences researchers Anthony Moss, Kenneth Halanych and Mark Liles of the College of Sciences and Mathematics and Alan Wilson of the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures in the College of Agriculture will fund a FlowCAM, a water analysis system, which will be used to examine how long oil droplets persist in the water column, to what degree organisms accumulate oil into lipid-rich regions of the body, both initially and thereafter, and the effect of the oil on invertebrate larval populations.Click here to read more

AAC Operation War Eagle: Crayons, Coloring Books & Football Community Service Project in Support of U.S. Troops Working with Children in Northern Iraq
The Atlanta Auburn Club is working with U.S. troops at FOB Warrior in Kirkuk, northern Iraq to help make a difference in some young Iraqi children's lives. The troops work with children in poor villages and have asked if we can collect and send crayons, coloring books, pencils and plain paper notebooks.
Our first shipment is en route. If you would like to join us in this effort, let us know! Once you are ready to ship, we can provide the address.
Needs: Coloring
books, crayons, pencils, notebooks for Iraqi children; Candy to pass
out to children during patrols (note: not chocolate).
Special thanks and a BIG War Eagle! to AU Tiger Ronnie Ellis who did a collection at his office!
The troops also want to launch a youth football (soccer) league in the small town of Dibbis, north of Kirkuk. Rather than collect individual donations of items needed for 80 children, we have been exploring options to make one bulk order. If you can sponsor a child or children with a donation of $25, $50, or another sum, please contact us for details.

Atlanta Auburn Club Has Joined UNITY Membership Program
The Atlanta Auburn Club has joined the Auburn Alumni Association's new UNITY membership program. And we jumped in early!
What does this mean for you and your local/national membership? If you are already a Life or Annual Member of the Auburn Alumni Association, your local membership in the Atlanta club is now also included. It also means that when joining or renewing, you will be asked to designate your local club. It also means less overall confusion over whether you have paid dues as a member of the national alumni association - or to your local club.
What does this mean for our club? Local dues supported our club's operating costs for websites and email hosting, and it also helped us have the cash on hand for deposits for our big events. As a club, we will now have to find another way to raise that money.
How can you help us? Most importantly, please choose the Atlanta club - code: MUATL - when joining/renewing membership in the Auburn Alumni Association. You can do it online by clicking here Membership in the association is not only tax-deductible, a portion of *new* Annual/Life memberships and Annual Renewals supports the Atlanta Auburn Club's scholarship fund. But you must list our code MUATL -
You can also support the Atlanta Auburn Club by attending our events and scholarship fundraisers, and making a tax-deductible donation to our 501(c)(3) scholarship fund, which supports both annual and endowed scholarship efforts for students from the metro area.
In the past year, we have gotten more queries about AAC scholarships than at any other time. But like most charities, we have also been hit hard by this economy. We need your support like never before - and we hope to see one of our biggest crowds ever for the Tiger Trek event with Coach Chizik.
If anyone has questions about UNITY membership or anything else, please contact the club.
Your Atlanta Auburn Club is one of the most dynamic and active local clubs in the country. Our mix of events is like no other and we take great pride in that. We are also, an all-volunteer organization. So, please join us --- and get involved!
