Auburn Tiger Soundoff: What Do You Think? Lots of talk lately about the Tigers' 2004 13-0 Perfect Season
It's
been the topic of Tweets, Facebook posts, editorials, and some intense
debate on sports radio, sports columns, and online forums. In the wake of the NCAA slapping sanctions on USC and vacating 14
Trojan victories from the 2004 and 2005 seasons, there's been a
steady stream of discussion over what to do with that tainted National
Championship crown that USC was awarded -- not-to-mention the NC trophy, which looks a bit like a cursed, hand-me-down right now.
The AJC's Tony Barnhart posted something again this week - "Should the Football Writers, BCS make Auburn their 2004 champions?"
What do you think? Send us an email at communications@atlantaauburnclub.org We'll compile the comments for our next E-Newsletter

Kickoff the Fall with Atlanta Auburn Club Habitat Build on Aug. 28
The AAC is excited to announce our latest community service opportunity with Habitat for Humanity! The date is Saturday, August 28 from 8a-4p and the build will be in Jonesboro. From what we understand, this is the same location we were at at for our two Habitat build dates in December (it's a Habitat subdivision). All volunteers must be prepared to work the entire day, although sometimes our work ends earlier than 4pm.
There is only space for 10 volunteers so starting Monday e-mail Ginger Florey-Powell at gingerf4au@aol.com to reserve your spot. What better way to kickoff football season than by spreading good karma and Auburn spirit!
If you have work gloves please
bring them. Also bring $8 to cover the cost of lunch (a new Habitat
policy this year). Also, if you have Auburn caps, t-shirts, etc that
you don't mind getting dirty, wear them! At our build in December, we
were assigned with some members of the Atlanta Bama Club -- and
fortunately we
dressed the part. You never know who we might be
teamed up with next!

AAC Operation War Eagle: Crayons, Coloring Books & Football Community Service Project in Support of U.S. Troops Working with Children in Northern Iraq
The Atlanta Auburn Club is hoping to help make a difference in some young children's lives in Iraq this Fall. We are in contact with U.S. troops in the 1st Armored Division at FOB Warrior in Kirkuk, northern Iraq. They work with children in some very poor villages and have asked if we can collect and send crayons, coloring books, pencils and plain paper notebooks. (A first shipment is going out this week!) With the help of our wider Auburn Family, we are hoping to fulfill this wish (and a couple others!) as as part of our Operation War Eagle effort. Please join us! Needs: ---Coloring books, crayons, pencils, notebooks for Iraqi children ---Candy to pass out to children during patrols (note: not chocolate; will melt in 100+ heat right now).
If any Tigers wish to do a collection - at home, in your neighborhood, among friends, in your tailgate group, etc - please contact us directly to coordinate. Once you are ready to ship, we can provide the address.
The troops also want to launch a youth football (soccer) league in the small town of Dibbis, north of Kirkuk. Rather than collect individual donations of items needed for 80 children, we have been exploring options to make one bulk order. If you can sponsor a child or children with a donation of $25, $50, or another sum, please contact us for details.

Special thanks and a big War Eagle to Kathy Harrell '83, who has offered to donate an Xbox for the troops!
Questions? Want to do a collection? Email us! War Eagle!!!

Auburn Alumni Assn to Launch New Book Club
The Auburn Alumni Association will soon announce a great new book club for alumni that will complement a university program for incoming freshmen. The Atlanta Auburn Club will get you full details very soon. Meantime, we can tell you something about the first book chosen, so you can get a head start on your reading. It will be the same book that incoming freshmen will also read this Fall.
Three Cups of Tea One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time
The book, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, recounts the journey that led Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to
climb Pakistan's K2, the world's second highest mountain, to
successfully establish schools in some of the most remote regions of
Afghanistan and Pakistan. It has sold over 3.5 million copies and is published in 39 countries.
Mortenson, who served in the U.S. Army in Germany (1977-1979), is co-founder of the nonprofit Central Asia Institute, and founder of Pennies for Peace. In
2009, he received Pakistan's highest civil award, Sitara-e-Pakistan
("Star of Pakistan") for his dedicated and humanitarian effort to
promote education and literacy in rural areas. He was also a nominee for
the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008 & 2009.
Mortenson co-authored Three Cups of Tea www.threecupsoftea.com, and authored the followup bestseller Stones into Schools www.stonesintoschools.com.

Mortenson is to speak at Auburn this Fall. Alumni will also be invited to attend. We'll get you full details as soon as they are available.

Auburn professor to study impact of oil spill with grant from National Science Foundation
Stephen "Ash" Bullard, assistant professor in the Department of
Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures in Auburn University's College of
Agriculture, recently received a $145,000 National Science Foundation
for Rapid Response Research grant for work related to the Deepwater
Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The 12-month study will be conducted by Bullard and Middle Tennessee
State University biology professor George Benz. Beginning this month,
the researchers will study parasites of fish as biosensors to learn how
the toxic effects of the spill impact the marine and coastal environment
of Alabama. "Our focus is on the health of the
aquatic environment in Alabama and adjacent states," Bullard said. "We
plan to use each parasite species as a natural biosensor to examine the
impact of the spill on fish health and ecosystem functioning." Did You Know?

Atlanta Auburn Club Has Joined UNITY Membership Program
The Atlanta Auburn Club has joined the Auburn Alumni Association's new UNITY membership program. And we jumped in early!
What does this mean for you and your local/national membership? If you are already a Life or Annual Member of the Auburn Alumni Association, your local membership in the Atlanta club is now also included. It also means that when joining or renewing, you will be asked to designate your local club. It also means less overall confusion over whether you have paid dues as a member of the national alumni association - or to your local club.
What does this mean for our club? Local dues supported our club's operating costs for websites and email hosting, and it also helped us have the cash on hand for deposits for our big events. As a club, we will now have to find another way to raise that money.
How can you help us? Most importantly, please choose the Atlanta club - code: MUATL - when joining/renewing membership in the Auburn Alumni Association. You can do it online by clicking here Membership in the association is not only tax-deductible, a portion of *new* Annual/Life memberships and Annual Renewals supports the Atlanta Auburn Club's scholarship fund. But you must list our code MUATL -
You can also support the Atlanta Auburn Club by attending our events and scholarship fundraisers, and making a tax-deductible donation to our 501(c)(3) scholarship fund, which supports both annual and endowed scholarship efforts for students from the metro area.
In the past year, we have gotten more queries about AAC scholarships than at any other time. But like most charities, we have also been hit hard by this economy. We need your support like never before - and we hope to see one of our biggest crowds ever for the Tiger Trek event with Coach Chizik.
If anyone has questions about UNITY membership or anything else, please contact the club.
Your Atlanta Auburn Club is one of the most dynamic and active local clubs in the country. Our mix of events is like no other and we take great pride in that. We are also, an all-volunteer organization. So, please join us --- and get involved!
