Big Hoops News: Tony Barbee Heads to Auburn!
Barbee to be Formally Introduced Tonight at New Auburn Arena

Barbee accepts AU hoops head coaching job
image

From AuburnTigers.com

March 24, 2010

AUBURN, Ala. - Tony Barbee, who has served as head coach at UTEP the past four seasons and was the 2010 Conference USA Coach of the Year, has been named the head basketball coach at Auburn University, Director of Athletics Jay Jacobs announced Wednesday.

In Barbee's four years, he led the UTEP program to three consecutive winning records, including a 26-7 mark during the 2009-10 season. The Miners won the Conference USA regular season title and made the NCAA Tournament this season.

Prior to his stint at UTEP, Barbee spent six highly successful seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis, where he was considered one of the nation's top recruiters.

"We are thrilled to welcome Tony Barbee into the Auburn Family," Jacobs said. "Coach Barbee has a vision of competing for championships at Auburn, and the passion to get us there. He is a phenomenal coach, an outstanding recruiter and a fierce competitor.

"Coach Barbee also shares Auburn values and is the right man to lead our team and represent Auburn University and the Auburn Family," Jacobs said. "The bottom line is Tony Barbee is a winner. We could not be happier to havimagee him as the new face of Auburn Basketball as we prepare to open a new era in a new arena next season."

Barbee, 38, will be formally introduced as Auburn's 20th head coach on Thursday.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to join the Auburn Family and proud to be the next head coach at Auburn," Barbee said. "We have challenges in front of us, but we also have great opportunities with everything Auburn has to offer-a great university, outstanding community, tremendous fan support, and a terrific new arena and practice facility. The time is now to take Auburn basketball to new heights."

Message from The Atlanta Auburn Club

On behalf of the Atlanta Auburn Club Board of Directors, I wanted let everyone know about a big change for our local club. Some, if not many, of you have probably heard about the Auburn Alumni Association's new UNITY membership program. The first of three waves was launched last October, involving many of the smaller clubs. Atlanta, like other larger Auburn clubs, was not scheduled to join in until October 2011.

That said, I am proud to let all of you know that our Atlanta club board has voted to jump in NOW.

image
What does this mean for you?
If you are already a Life or Annual Member of the Auburn Alumni Association, your local membership in the Atlanta club is now also included. It also means that when joining or renewing, you will be asked to designate your local club. It also means less overall confusion over whether you have paid dues as  a member of the national alumni association - or to your local club.

What does this mean for our club?
Local dues supported our club's operating costs for websites and email hosting, and it also helped us have the cash on hand for deposits for our big events. As a club, we will now have to find another way to raise that money.

How can you help us?
Most importantly, please choose the Atlanta club - code: MUATL - when joining/renewing membership in the Auburn Alumni Association. You can do it online by clicking here  Membership in the association is not only tax-deductible, a portion of *new* Annual/Life memberships and Annual Renewals supports the Atlanta Auburn Club's scholarship fund. But you must list our code MUATL -

You can also support the Atlanta Auburn Club by attending our events and scholarship fundraisers, and making a tax-deductible donation to our 501(c)(3) scholarship fund, which supports both annual and endowed scholarship efforts for students from the metro area.

In the past year, we have gotten more queries about AAC scholarships than at any other time. But like most charities, we have also been hit hard by this economy. We need your support like never before - and we hope to see one of our biggest crowds ever for the Tiger Trek event with Coach Chizik.

If anyone has questions about UNITY membership or anything else, feel free to contact me any time.

Your Atlanta Auburn Club is one of the most dynamic and active local clubs in the country. Our mix of events is like no other and we take great pride in that. We are also, an all-volunteer organization. So, please join us --- and get involved!

Men's Golf Team beats Top 30 Teams to Win The E-Z-Go Invitational
The Auburn men's golf team (291-862) fought back from a seven-stroke deficit Sunday to win the E-Z-Go Invitational, overtaking No. 28 North Florida (299-863) in the final nine holes of play. The event, known for consistantly providing stiff competition, hosted seven programs ranked in the top-30 and seven SEC schools. "The guys stuck with what they've been doing all spring," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "Down the stretch it was a lot of fun more than anything. Days like today are what you practice for. To see whether you will succeed or not in those moments are what the game is all about."The win marks the first for the Tigers at the event, held at the par-72 Forest Heights Golf Club in Statesboro, Ga. The victory is also the second for Auburn this week after the Tigers' dominating performance in Monday's Tiger Shootout. Click here to read more.

Tiger Baseball Sweeps UGA & Hunter Morris is Named SEC Player of the Week
Auburn staged a three-game road sweep of Georgia to open up the Southeastern Conference portion of its schedule over the weekend. Auburn (14-5, 3-0 SEC) pounded out 43 runs on 46 hits in the sweep of Georgia, led by SEC Player of the Week Hunter Morris' 10 hits, five for extra-bases, and 14 RBI. As a team, Auburn is hitting a SEC-best .353 with a SEC-high 33 home runs and a SEC-high 189 runs scored. "Getting named SEC Player or the Week is a great recognition," Morris said. "It's exciting, but at the same time a lot of it comes from the success our team had. You don't get that kind of recognition when you lose three games. So it's a team effort and for me personally it was exciting to see that come together as well."

Auburn Pitching Too Much for Tide in Capital Classic
Coming into the Capital City Classic, the Alabama pitching staff was churning out some of the best performances in the SEC. In the Classic, however, it was an Auburn pitcher that made the difference. Reliever Michael Hurst, who had made just six appearances and thrown only 10 innings coming in, went three and one-third in the middle of the game, allowed a hit and a run and completely stifled a Crimson Tide offense that was coming to life. Hurst, who was named the game's MVP, allowed the Tigers to stay out front of the No. 17 Tide. Auburn won, 8-6, in front of 7,205 at Riverwalk Stadium. "Hurst came in and did a nice job keeping us at bay," Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard said. "He gave us fits here last year. There's really no reason for it. We've hit guys like him. But he was good tonight."With a little bit of pitching to work with, Auburn's powerful offense went to work. It was a four-run third inning that did the most damage for the Tigers. The big blow was a three-run home run from left fielder Casey McElroy, who sent a shot over the left-field wall and out of the stadium. That gave Auburn a 5-2 advantage at that point."It was the typical Auburn-Alabama game," Auburn head coach John Pawlowski said. "It was a great atmosphere and our guys responded like you would hope they would."

Request for nominations for Auburn Alumni Association
The Nominating Committee of the Auburn Alumni Association Board of Directors is requesting nominations from alumni and friends of Auburn University for four new directors. All nominees must be life members of the association, and be willing to serve on a volunteer basis. These board positions require travel to Auburn at least three times per year. Selected nominees will be installed this Fall; each will serve a four-year term. Nominations are also requested for the officer positions of president and vice president, both of which serve two-year terms. All nominees must be current or former members of the Auburn Alumni Association Board of Directors and life members of the association. Candidates should have a demonstrated history of leadership in support of the Auburn Alumni Association and Auburn University. Strong consideration will be shown to those who have actively promoted the association and AU through involvement with local Auburn clubs. Additionally, persons who have previously contributed both time and resources to AU and the association will be strongly considered. In agreeing to serve on the Auburn Alumni Association Board, directors and officers are expected to participate in the association's sustaining life membership program through contributions to the "Circle of Excellence" scholarship society. The Nominating Committee will also consider an individual's accomplishments, as demonstrated through career development and community service, along with their potential for representing the association's various constituencies. Additionally, an individual's college major(s), profession and the geographic location of his or her residence might influence the committee's determination. The committee encourages all alumni association members to participate by submitting nominations for consideration to Dr. Debbie Shaw '84, Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Executive Director of the Auburn Alumni Association, Auburn Alumni Center, 317 South College Street, Auburn University, AL 36849-5149. A nomination form (pdf) must be submitted, along with at least two letters of recommendation (but no more than four), from life members of the association. Resumes may also be submitted. The nomination form is available for downloading on the association Web site (www.aualum.org), or by contacting the AU Office of Alumni Affairs at (334) 844-1134. Completed forms, letters of recommendation and resumes may be returned to Dr. Shaw at the above address or sent to her by fax (334) 844-4003 or as e-mail attachments (debbieshaw@auburn.edu). The deadline for receiving nominations and supporting documentation is 5 p.m. CST, April 5, 2010. For more information, see www.aualum.org.
