War Eagle from the Atlanta Auburn Club!

Greetings!

War Eagle everyone! Lots to share with you, including several dates for upcoming club events and great news on Auburn hoops action! We're going to be in primetime on GPB next week, the AAC Young Alums are kicking off the year at an Atlanta brewery, and we've got lots of great photos to share from our recent "Paint Aubie" event! First, though, some quick business...

The Atlanta Auburn Club is pleased to report that we recently presented Auburn University with checks totaling $40,000 in scholarship funds. This total includes $14,000 for the club's Annual Scholarships to be awarded for the 2009/2010 school year, $25,000 for our Atlanta Auburn Club Endowment, and an additional $1,000 for the Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Fund. The $25,000 lump payment for our endowed scholarship fund includes $10,000 raised in the 2007 club year -- and it means that we reached the minimum funding threshold ($25,000) to establish the endowment in only two short years. Thanks to your support of our scholarship fundraising efforts the past two years (2007 & 2008), the AAC has raised a grand total of $60,000 in scholarship funds to help metro area students -- now and into perpetuity. It is an impressive achievement that we can all celebrate and be proud of!

While we continue to work in 2009 and beyond to raise scholarship funds, you can help us grow the AAC endowment even quicker by designating a portion of your Annual Giving donation to this fund.

Finally, the Auburn Alumni Association announced at the recent club conference that the AAC continues to maintain its top "All Auburn - All Orange" status for Auburn Club Excellence. We also got Honorable Mention for Outstanding Scholarship Program and Honorable Mention for Communication!

Volunteers sought for this March 27 AAC Event

MAIN Atlanta is partnering with Stephenson Middle School in Stone Mountain to assist with their annual "Career Week," an innovative event created especially for the benefit of their middle school students. Speaker Day is on Friday, March 27, and we are encouraging our many minority alumni in the area to  spend the day speaking with students about their careers and what specific education and/or experience they needed to get their jobs.

The event runs from 10:00am-3:45pm. Volunteers will speak to four classes, which have approximately 28 students each. We would like participants to be available during the specified time indicated. But if your schedule does not permit, we can accommodate individual speakers accordingly. Continental breakfast and lunch are provided.

imageAuburn rallies to beat Alabama 77-73
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Korvotney Barber had 13 points and 16 rebounds and Frankie Sullivan hit an off-balance shot with 11 seconds left to cap Auburn's 77-73 comeback victory over Alabama on Tuesday night.

The Tigers (20-10, 9-6 Southeastern Conference) clinched a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in next week's SEC tournament with the win, their sixth in seven games. Barber's tip-in with 55 seconds left gave Auburn the lead and Senario Hillman missed a shot at the other end to set up Sullivan's clinching basket.

Alabama (16-13, 6-9) led by as many as 13 points early in the first half, but couldn't push its winning streak to four games. The Tigers caught up with a 12-2 run and took their first lead since the opening minutes with an even bigger spurt. Layups by DeWayne Reed and Tay Waller capped an 18-2 stretch and put Auburn ahead 69-61 entering the final 5 minutes.

Auburn Top Seed? Tennessee an underdog?
BY Noah Trister, AP SPORTS WRITER

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Southeastern Conference women's basketball tournament is different this year - that much should be obvious from the very start. For one thing, Tennessee will actually have to play on the first day. Instead of receiving their usual first-round bye, the 19th-ranked Lady Vols face Alabama in the first round Thursday. It's the first time Tennessee has had to play on the tournament's opening day since 1997. That also happens to be the last year Auburn won this event - and the sixth-ranked Tigers are the top seed this year.

"When you get into that setting, boy, anything can happen," Auburn coach Nell Fortner said. "We're going to go there just like everybody else with a desire to win it, and we'll see what happens."

Tennessee won its record 13th SEC tournament title last season, but it's been a tough 2008-09 for the Lady Vols, who are seeded fifth in this week's tournament. LSU, which lost in the finals of each of the last four SEC tournaments, is unranked this week and seeded third in this tournament. Tennessee beat Vanderbilt on Sunday night to reach the 20-win mark, and as long as coach Pat Summitt is on the sideline it's unlikely anyone will take the Lady Vols too lightly.

"I don't know how they'll respond going into the tournament - if they're going to feel pressure or if they're going to be able to go and focus on being the best team that they can be," Summitt said of her players. "This time of the year is when coaches have to be very invested in communication and bringing out the best in players. That's what our whole staff will do. It's a time for us to be positive as well as demanding." The Lady Vols scratched their Wednesday workout at North Little Rock's Alltel Arena. Twelfth-seeded Alabama held its session.

In other first-round games Thursday, eighth-seeded Arkansas takes on ninth-seeded Ole Miss, seventh-seeded Georgia faces 10th-seeded Kentucky, and sixth-seeded Mississippi State plays 11th-seeded South Carolina. Auburn, second-seeded Vanderbilt, LSU and fourth-seeded Florida receive byes until Friday. The championship game is Sunday night.

Arkansas will play the opening game of the tournament and hopes to play well enough to earn some interest from the local fans. "You certainly want to play well in front of your home fans," Razorbacks coach Tom Collen said. "You want everybody in your state to be excited about your program. We're clearly in the building process."

For Auburn, this season presents quite an opportunity for a program that has existed in the shadow of Tennessee in the SEC. Auburn has the league's top scorer in DeWanna Bonner and enters the tournament with a 27-2 record.  The Tigers have to adjust to their role as a tournament favorite, but Fortner says they've had plenty of time to get used to it.

"We've had a target on our back for most of the season," Fortner said. "In the conference race, we were pretty much in the driver seat for the majority of the conference season."

Alltel Arena is hosting the SEC women's tournament for the third time.

SEC Honors Auburn's Bonner and Fortner
WVTM-TV - updated 7:46 a.m. ET, Wed., March. 4, 2009
BIRMINGHAM - Tabbed as the Southeastern Conference Preseason Player of the Year in October, Auburn senior DeWanna Bonner lived up to the billing this season as she was voted the SEC Player of the Year by the league's head coaches, the conference office announced Tuesday. Auburn head coach Nell Fortner was also named SEC Coach of the Year and senior Whitney Boddie joined her teammate on the All-SEC First Team.

Bonner, who was also named to the All-SEC First Team and All-SEC Defensive Team, finished the regular season averaging a SEC-best 20.9 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game. Her scoring average ranks 10th nationally as she is one of only eight players in the country ranked in the top 30 in scoring and top 100 in rebounding.

Also a candidate for national player of the year, Bonner is the first SEC Player of the Year for Auburn since Lauretta Freeman won the honor in 1993. It marks the fifth time ever for a Tiger to win the award, following Freeman, Vickie Orr (1988) and Carolyn Jones (1990, 1991).

Bonner also finished the regular season as the first-ever Auburn player to lead the SEC in scoring.
The Fairfield, Ala., native moved into second all-time at Auburn in scoring during Sunday's season finale against Arkansas. Her 25 points gave her 2,052 on her career and moved her past Orr. Bonner also picked up the 1,000th rebound of her career in the game and is currently tied for second with Orr at 1,006 rebounds.

Known mainly for her offense throughout the season, Bonner was equally dangerous on the defensive end of the court as she was also named to the All-SEC Defensive Team. Averaging 1.9 steals and 1.6 blocks per game, she is one of only two players ranked in the top 10 in the league in both categories. She is also the first Auburn player to be named to the All-SEC Defensive Team since its creation last season.

Fortner, who is in her fifth season at the helm of the Auburn program, has put together the best season in 20 years for the Tigers as she guided the team to its first SEC title since 1989. Auburn's 27-2 overall record and 12-2 SEC mark account for the most regular-season wins in either category the program's history.  (courtesy: Auburn Media Relations)

One Year Later, Evidence the Zebra is Doing Well

Noah's Ark sent out a recent update on Auburn's favorite zebra, Evidence. One year after he was found on a metro interstate and treated at the Auburn University vet clinic, the young striped "Tiger" is doing well. Here is what they said:

imageEvidence has decided he doesn't like cold weather much. But he does enjoy the extra time he and Pop get to spend together when he stays near his barn, instead of going to the public habitat during the day.

It's been almost nine months since this striped wonder came to live at Noah's Ark. He is an amazing animal and has proven to us over and over that he is NOT a horse! "He is a wild animal," says Jama Hedgecoth, founder and director of Noah's Ark. "And all of us have to remind ourselves of that whenever we handle him...even Pop, and Evidence LOVES Pop!"

Indeed, the young zebra and Pop - aka Charles Hedgecoth, Sr., co-founder of Noah's Ark - have built a very special relationship. Evidence has a tendency to "act up" with other staff, but all Pop has to do is show up and speak a soft word, and the zebra runs to him for some attention.
image
Among their favorite things is to share Pop's hat. "For some reason, he just loves my hat," says Pop with a grin. "I think I'm going to get him a straw one and cut holes in it for his ears!"

Evidence came to Noah's Ark on April 8, 2008. His estimated age was two months old - so we gave him a birthday of February 14!

Noah's Ark will plan a combined party in April for his 1st birth-day and one year anniversary at Noah's Ark. He would also love cards for his special day!

Noah's Ark is located at 712 LG Griffin Road, Locust Grove, GA  30248; Tel: 770-957-0888; and on the Web at:   www.noahs-ark.org

This one is from Jay Moore:

Hello,
I am an Auburn alum in the Roswell area. I have 10 season tix which we renew annually in the Blue priority section. The seats are in section 103 (upper east), row 5 approximately on the 20 yard line. The seats are excellent for view of the field and access to the concourse. We are on the aisle adjacent to the concourse portal. One of our group is giving up two of their tickets. As Blue priority seats are normally already pre-sold, I thought that you might know of someone who might be interested in picking up these seats for this year and into the future as long as they wished to retain. There is a priority donation of $350/seat, plus whatever the cost of season tickets.
Should you be aware of any interested parties please have them contact me at their earliest convenience. Please understand that both the tickets and priority are being offered at face value. This might be an excellent opportunity for someone to upgrade without waiting for an extended amount of time. Thanks and War Eagle!

ALUM Assn Requests Nominations for Alumni Board of Directors

The Nominating Committee of the Auburn Alumni Association Board of Directors is requesting nominations from alumni and friends of Auburn University for four new directors. All nominees must be life members of the association, and be willing to serve on a volunteer basis.  These board positions require travel to Auburn at least three times per year.  Successful nominees will be installed this fall; each will serve a four-year term.

Candidates should have a demonstrated history of leadership in support of the Auburn Alumni Association and Auburn University.  Strong consideration will be shown to those who have actively promoted the association and AU through involvement with local Auburn clubs.  Additionally, persons who have previously contributed both time and resources to AU and the association will be strongly considered.  In agreeing to serve on the Auburn Alumni Association Board, directors are expected to participate in the association's sustaining life membership program through contributions to the "Circle of Excellence" scholarship society.

The Nominating Committee will also consider an individual's accomplishments, as demonstrated through career development and community service, along with their potential for representing the association's various constituencies.  Additionally, an individual's college major(s), profession and the geographic location of his or her residence might influence the committee's determination.

The committee encourages all alumni association members to participate by submitting nominations for consideration to Dr. Debbie Shaw '84, Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Executive Director of the Auburn Alumni Association, Auburn Alumni Center, 317 South College Street, Auburn University, AL  36849-5149.  A nomination form must be submitted, along with at least two letters of recommendation (but no more than four), from life members of the association.  Resumes may also be submitted.  The nomination form is available for downloading on the association Web site (www.aualum.org), or by contacting the AU Office of Alumni Affairs at (334) 844-1134.  Completed forms, letters of recommendation and resumes may be returned to Dr. Shaw at the above address or sent to her by fax (334) 844-4003 or as e-mail attachments (debbieshaw@auburn.edu).

Deadline for receiving nominations and supporting documentation is 5 p.m. CST, April 1, 2009.
