Campus News: Uproar Continues over Unnamed AU Student Center
from the Montgomery Advertiser website October 27, 2008 By Darryn Simmons
Next week, Auburn University will hold the grand opening of its new student center. A
day that should be celebrated by everyone connected with the
university, the Nov. 5 event has been met with displeasure by some
Auburn alumni. They're
upset about one major difference between the old student center and the
new one -- the new one will not feature the name of Auburn
Dean-Emeritus James E. Foy.
Foy,
who will turn 92 on Nov. 3, is a beloved former dean of students at
Auburn and the man many credit with getting Auburn and Alabama playing
football against each other again. Foy is scheduled to be the grand
marshal for a parade the day of the grand opening.
In
contrast to the old Foy Student Union, the new student center won't be
named for anyone, but the school is open to putting a name on it if a
donor is willing to pay, according to Auburn spokeswoman Deedie Dowdell. She
said the old Foy Student Union, which now will be used for academics
and offices, will be named Foy Hall in his honor and that the
information desk at the new student center also will be named for Foy. "That's
no small honor," she said. "We in no way want to diminish Dean Foy.
He's beloved, and we feel this is a way to honor that."
State Rep. Barry Mask, R-Wetumpka, the first person to wear the "Aubie" costume as Auburn's mascot, said that's far from enough. "That's
sort of like taking the name off the Lincoln Memorial and putting it on
the bathroom door and calling it the Lincoln door," Mask said.
House Majority Leader Ken Guin, another Auburn alumnus, agreed. "That's
a crock," the Democrat from Carbon Hill said. "It makes no sense.
Wherever there is a student union at Auburn, it should have Dean Foy's
name on it."
Mask
said it makes no sense to have a student union without Foy's name on it
considering his place in Auburn history as the dean of students. "Everyone
I talk to is flabbergasted by it," said Mask. "I can't believe this
would be attempted, and I hope that it'll be stopped."
It also came as a shock to the Foy family.
"We're
distraught over it, and we've been approached by many people in the
Auburn community who are just as distraught, if not more," said Susan
Foy Spratling, the youngest daughter of James Foy. Back
in 1999 when students campaigned to raise activity fees to help pay for
a new student center, they used the slogan: "Vote Yes for a New Foy."
Mask said it was implied that the new center would be named after Foy.
But Dowdell said that was never discussed among the university's board of trustees. "There
was never any official name discussed," she said. "Students may have
referred to it as that, but there was never a referendum."
Since
the new center currently is unnamed, Mask said it should carry Foy's
name. He said the name could be changed later if a donor were to come
into the picture. He referred to the situation as an example that some traditions are for sale at Auburn.
"You
could say in the last 15 years that Auburn has lost a lot of its heart
and soul and now is about the almighty dollar," he said.
Dowdell
said that isn't the case and the school is in no way against students
and alumni on this matter or trying to disrespect Foy. "We simply felt there were other ways in which we could honor him," she said.

From the AAC Mailbag: Dean Foy and the New Student Center

Photo from February 2008; Former Auburn dean James Foy, whose name is on
the ODK Sportsmanship Trophy, sang the Auburn fight song as he celebrated the Tigers' 6th straight win over Alabama
Last week, the Atlanta Auburn Club asked what you thought about the BOT's decision not to name the new student center for Dean Foy. We received a number of emails and want to share those with you:
I think the idea to sell the name of the Building
to the highest bidder is not something Auburn should be proud of. All of
us who attended Auburn and remember Dean Foy, and the contributions he made to
the school certainly feel the Union should be named for him as had apparently
been planned. We all realize the need all schools have for money now days,
but there are more honorable ways to raise it that this.
Thanks for your good work,
Marshall B. Dean, 65' -- I am dismayed and disgusted that
Auburn University
would apparently put a price tag on naming rights for any structure on Campus. Is
the Stadium next? If not now, it will be at some point under this logic. I was a fortunate young student who spent some time with
Dean Foy during my years at AU. He embodied the Auburn Spirit about which we
all talk and hope to live. In my opinion, he raised it up quite a notch in the
then turbulent times on College Campuses which were creating havoc nationwide. Foy
had a way of channeling energy, often negative energy, into positive energy,
creating a spirit uncommon in most college atmospheres. As much as anyone he popularized
the Auburn Creed which most of us carried in our pockets in that day. There were legitimate reasons to name the Student Union
after Foy, a decision endorsed by the Students and the Board of Trustees at
that time. There is no reason, certainly not one of mere dollars, to reverse
that decision now. Ed Milton -- Dean James Foy is the special type of man that no amount of homage money will be deservingly adequate. His contributions to his country, Auburn University
and the legend number of students of Auburn University are priceless.
No other person in the history of the University better exemplifies
Auburn's amazing spirit. Were I able to give 25 million to Auburn I'd
do so with the stipulation that the Foy name remain on the building. No
point in sharing a name. Maybe the Development office will be able to
sell the fifty yard line marker
or hash mark on Dye Field at Jordan Hare Stadium, or the coat of paint
on the goal post. The Foy name belongs to the students on their
building. David Stoddard 63 -- Would serve them right if Budweiser put up the cash and they had to name it after them. Steve Hamilton

Beat Bama Now! Support the Annual AU Food Drive!!
The competition is on and the Auburn students have requested everyone's help!
Click here to Beat Bama in the Annual Food Drive
From Ashley Nichols, SGA Director of the
Beat Bama Food Drive: "I am the
Director of the 2008 SGA Beat Bama Food Drive, a month long food drive
which benefits the East Alabama Food Bank and involves the entire
Auburn/Opelika area. For the past fourteen years, Auburn University and University of Alabama students
have competed with each other in the weeks prior to the annual Iron
Bowl to see which university could raise the most food for their food
bank. Last year, Alabama won the competition with a total of 241,336 pounds of food to Auburn's 183,017 pounds. This
is one of the State's largest food drives, which carries the Food Bank
through the crucial holiday season and even through the 3 or 4 months
that follow. Last year, Auburn donated 183,017
pounds of food to the food bank, and our goal for the 2008 Food Drive
is 250,000 pounds! This year, the drive began on October 20th and will
last until November 20th. We, the
directors of the drive, would like to spread the word to the AU Alumni
and ask for their support in this effort. While the alumni can bring
donations to Auburn's campus during this time, we feel that they can
more effectively participate in our drive by donating through our
website, beatbamafooddrive.com. All donations are tax deductible and are used by the East Alabama Food Bank to buy necessary food items. Each dollar donated on this site adds two pounds of food to the donation total.

In the Headlines: Latest Auburn News...and more Auburn-Ole Miss game The Nov. 1.
Auburn-Ole Miss game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford will be
televised regionally by Raycom Sports. Kickoff is slated for 11:30 a.m (Auburn time) Tiger Walk: Will begin at approximately 9:30 AM CT at the Southeast corner of the stadium by the Indoor Practice Facility. The Tigers will walk north into the stadium.

From The OA News online Ole Miss Trip Not as Scary for Tuberville By Andrew Gribble
The
storyline has become less and less juicy as the years go by, but a trip
back to Oxford, Miss., for Tommy Tuberville and a number of coaches on
his staff still brings back the memories.
The unkind reception from an anti-Tuberville fanbase has also tempered, making the trip just a tad more relaxing.
"It's not quite as brutal as it was early in my tenure," Tuberville
said. "It's always fun to go back and see old friends. They even call
for tickets. I never give them to them but they call for tickets."
The enemies certainly outnumbered the friends in Tuberville's first couple of return trips to Ole Miss.
Days before he signed with Auburn following the 1998 season,
Tuberville made one of his more infamous statements: "They'll have to
carry me out of here in a pine box," an enthusiastic commitment to the
school where he began his head-coaching career.
The words, obviously, did not sit well with fans, who have let
Tuberville hear it when he returns every other year. The worst reaction
came in his first trip back, in 2000, when Auburn players carried
Tuberville on their shoulders after the Tigers' victory. The
Vaught-Hemingway crowd heavily booed the display.
The boos and nasty signs haven't necessarily had an effect on
Tuberville, who is 4-0 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and 7-2 overall
against his old school.
"A lot of changes over there," Tuberville said. "They've done a good
job with facilities. They've done a good job with the football team.
They've gotten better the last few years. This is still a pretty young
team."
Three of Tuberville's offensive assistants and two on defense followed Tuberville from Oxford to Auburn. "We had some great times over there, but we're at Auburn now,"
defensive ends coach Terry Price said. "We've been here 10 years and
again it's Auburn versus Ole Miss.
"So really it's a ballgame."
One more update
As he said after Wednesday's practice, Tuberville said that the
only players likely to miss Saturday's game are cornerback Neiko Thorpe
(ankle) and right guard Byron Isom (concussion).
Isom did not dress for Auburn's game at West Virginia, per doctors'
orders, and Tuberville said Thursday that sophomore Mike Berry, who
started in Isom's place, was still running with the first-team offense.
Tuberville said nose guard Tez Doolittle (groin) should be
available, and cornerback Jerraud Powers (hamstring) will hopefully get
a little healthier before gametime.
Tailback Ben Tate (hamstring), who Tuberville said Sunday was about
"80-85 percent," is not quite 100 percent yet, but has improved by the
day. A big step this week came when Tate did not have to warm up on a
stationary bicycle during individual drills.
"Now he's going through everything, so he should be fine," Tuberville said.
Kick it
Tuberville stood strong in his vow to keep Auburn's open kicking job a secret heading into Saturday.
Tuberville said he has liked what he's seen from starter Wes Byrum,
backup Morgan Hull and punter Clinton Durst, who was thrown into the
mix at the start of the week.
He was particularly impressed after Wednesday's practice, when all
three kickers made all of their attempts. Each kicker has gotten six
kicks under pressure each day in practice, Tuberville said.
"We'll go all the way to Saturday knowing that everyone's had a lot
of work this week," Tuberville said. "We'll just go off what they do in
pre-game."
This and that
Auburn is 8-1 all-time in Oxford. It is 24-8 lifetime against Ole
Miss ... The Tigers have not allowed a touchdown in the first quarter
and are one of only 10 defenses that have not allowed more than four
rushing touchdowns this season ... Ole Miss' roster features six
Alabama natives and one former Tiger, linebacker Patrick Trahan.
Freshman tailback Enrique Davis originally signed with Auburn before
de-committing and joining the Rebels. Davis has run for 175 yards and
two touchdowns this season.
From The Mississippi Daily Journal, Oct. 31, 2008 Auburn returning to its roots BY PARRISH ALFORD, Daily Journal
OXFORD - Auburn has a tradition of powerful running football teams, but starting over hasn't been a piece of cake. Tigers
coach Tommy Tuber-ville, formerly of Ole Miss, made a dramatic shift in
philosophy late last season when he hired offensive coordinator Tony
Franklin to run the spread offense. Tuberville made another dramatic decision earlier this month when he fired Franklin at mid-stream.
The
Tigers (4-4, 2-3 SEC) ditched the spread and showed a lot more I
formation in their 34-17 loss at West Virginia last Thursday. Dropping one formation for another hasn't been easy, even though Auburn has a history of two-back sets.
"We're
definitely building the playbook back up," said sophomore quarterback
Kodi Burns said. "It wasn't so much cutting things out. We had stuff we
could run, but we stuck to the basics. I think the coaches and players
sense that we can get it done now. We saw that in the first half of the
West Virginia game."
It wasn't seen in the second. Auburn led 17-10 at halftime but was held scoreless in the final two quarters. Auburn rushed for 149 yards but needed 45 carries to get there and finished with 260 total yards. The
offense showed some life behind Burns, who rushed for 82 yards and a
touchdown on 15 carries and completed 13-for-21 passes for 111 yards
and another score.
'It's the little things' But the
Tigers couldn't hold the ball in the second half, and defensive
breakdowns helped West Virginia rally from an early 17-3 deficit with
31 unanswered points. Mountaineers quarterback Pat White threw
for 174 yards and three touchdowns, and tailback Noel Devine rushed for
207 yards and a touchdown.
"We've got to improve in the second
half by staying on blocks longer, receivers catching the ball and me
making better reads," Burns said. "It's the little things. That's how
it's been all year."
The Tigers began the season as a top 10
team but have lost three straight and four of their last five, with a
25-22 setback at home against Arkansas Oct. 11.
Ole Miss coach
Houston Nutt is familiar with the Auburn players, not only from seeing
them in Western Division games while he was head coach at Arkansas. Two
of Auburn's key performers grew up down the road from Fayetteville -
Burns in Fort Smith, Ark., and offensive lineman Lee Ziemba in Rogers,
Ark.
"Don't tell me they're struggling," Nutt said. "I know
their offensive line. I know what they're capable of doing. And I've
seen Kodi from junior high on. I know what he can do, scramble around
and make plays out of nothing."

The Atlanta Auburn Club is recognized as a not-for-profit corporation by the state of Georgia, and the club's Roy B. Sewell Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. holds 501(c)(3) non-profit status from the IRS. The AAC raises thousands of dollars annually to fund scholarships for metro Atlanta area students to attend Auburn University. In 2007, we were able to raise about $30,000 to fund our regular and newly established endowed scholarships. The Greater Atlanta metro area is home to 20,000 Auburn alumni, fans & friends....and still growing. War Eagle!
