| War Eagle from the Atlanta Auburn Club! |
|
|
Greetings!
War Eagle everyone! Lots to report in this issue of the club newsletter....so here goes:
First some great news to pass along for all of our Georgia Tigers. We got word that from January 1st of this year through October 17 (last Friday) Georgia's Special Tag Office issued an additional 1,876 Auburn Club special tags across the state. Considering that our tag has been out since January 2006, these are amazing numbers. Keep spreading the word! And tell us, what's the highest number you've seen? (Once they topped 10,000, additional letters started appearing on the tags - so let us know!)
Tomorrow night, of course, is the Auburn-West Virginia game. So, now that we don't have to wait in long lines for gasoline --- don't sit at home and watch it alone! Join the AAC at any of our three viewing locations. More details below.
Looking ahead, the Atlanta Auburn Club still has plenty of club T-shirts, so don't forget to get yours before the UGA game. We've been talking to the ALUM Association about that November 15 matchup and are hoping the ALUM tent will be full of Tigers from all our clubs in Georgia. We'll have more details as that date approaches.
As always, if something comes up or you have questions about anything -- feel free to contact us!
Hope to see you tomorrow night! And GO TIGERS!

Campus News: Student Center Not to be Named for Dean Foy?
BY OPINION STAFF
/ The Plainsman Editorial Board October 16, 2008
The name of the shiny new Student Center students are breaking in is up for
sale.
The University recently revealed the building would not carry the name of
former Dean of Students James E. Foy to the dismay of many, including those who
spearheaded the effort for the construction of the new union.
Instead, the University has decided it will name the building after a donor
willing to pay $25 million, roughly half the cost of the building.
Understandably, alumni and current students do not like this idea, and
neither do we at The Plainsman.
The Plainsman has received more letters in the past weeks in relation to the
naming of the new union than any other issue to warrant a letter in our mailbox,
and everyone has sent a plea, from students and alumni in favor of having the
Foy name carry over to the new building.
The old student union was the center of student life, much like the new one
has become, and it was for this reason the Auburn Union was renamed in 1977 in
honor of the man who served as the dean of student affairs for 25 years.
Now what was once an honor is a commodity, and Auburn seemingly cannot wait
to sell it off.
It is one thing to have a building named after someone who helped raise funds
to build the building, but it is another to construct a building meant to embody
the spirit of Auburn's students and their beloved former dean and then throw it
up for sale like a foyer or a courtyard.
What bothers us most about the whole situation is the Board of Trustees'
blatant disregard for the wishes of students past, who agreed to pay higher fees
so a new building, named after Foy, could be built.
It is as if the Board of Trustees pulled a bait-and-switch without even
providing the bait, because the SGA and the Foy Outlook Committee got the ball
rolling for the construction of a "new Foy" in 1998.

AAC's Operation War Eagle: Dispatch from Iraq
Note from the AAC: In late July, Auburn grad Sarah Moon contacted the Atlanta Auburn Club about her husband, '82 Auburn grad Greg, who is deployed to Iraq with the Army Reservists. He is with the 729th FED (Facilities Engineer Detachment). After collecting a box full of Auburn goodies, including T-shirts, a shaker, and a special card signed by Auburn Tigers at one of our events, we shipped it off to Greg in August, before the start of the football season. Apparently, our care package (decorated with a big "AU" and stickers) made its own tour of Iraq! But it finally found Greg. Here is an email that he recently sent us:
War Eagle to the Atlanta Auburn Club Thanks for the box of goodies. It finally caught up with me after my mid tour R&R. The box had to chase me around Iraq a little. I have of picture of the My Auburn Flag and some of the Gifts you sent. I enjoyed them. If you touch base with Sarah she could forward my newsletters I have written since I've been here. Unforturnately I having computer issues today and can't get to the letter files. I will be moving on to another base to work on some projects using Iraqi money to help them get things going.

My unit is in the middle of a change out of the Brigade we're attached to, so our computers are getting messed up again. I hope to be able to get to all my stuff soon. I got to see the Mississippi State game while in Kuwait waiting for a flight back and I watched the Tennessee game last night/this morning. I'll catch games where I can. They try to get the big games on AFN. By the way I didn't have an Auburn fan to give the cards to yet (Editor's Note: the AAC's War Eagle cards!) but I did leave several scattered around a Bama fan's desk for him to find. I'd better send this before computer/server/network decides to freeze up on me. Once again Thanks and WAR Eagle Greg Moon '82 Gregory D. In the Headlines: Latest Auburn News...and more From The Press-Register Auburn-Ole Miss game on Raycom AUBURN - The Nov. 1.
Auburn-Ole Miss game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford will be
televised regionally by Raycom Sports. Kickoff is slated for 11:30 a.m (Auburn time)
It
will mark Auburn's second game this season to be aired by Raycom with
the first coming on Sept. 6 when the Tigers defeated Southern Miss
27-13 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
From The Decatur Daily Coach Tuberville Puts Rumors to Rest
AUBURN, Oct 21, 2008-- Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville says he isn't going anywhere. He says he's in good health, that coaching hasn't burnt him out, that he still enjoys recruiting and he didn't re-negotiate his contract last week. With information circulating to the contrary on the Internet, Tuberville addressed it all at his weekly news conference Monday.
"It's just amazing the rumors that go around when things are not going as good as you would hope," Tuberville said during his opening statement. "No matter what happens anywhere, you're going to have years that things are not going to go perfect.
"That's my job to get it straightened out."
With Auburn off to a disappointing 4-3 start and losing three of its last four SEC games, rumors have circulated that Auburn trustees and Tuberville have reached an agreement for him to resign at season's end. Tuberville stressed he has made no such agreement.
"I've been here 10 years," Tuberville said. "I plan on being here 10 more, and I'm looking forward to it. And all these rumors get started, and I'm 10 years an Auburn man and I'm 10 years more of an Auburn man than most, because I've put my heart and soul in this thing, and we ain't going to stop now.
"We're going to keep working and striving to get better because we do have a good football team. We're not playing well right now, and this is a transition year, but we're going to get better."
During the preseason, the Tigers were projected as a top-10 team. The media picked them to win the SEC Western Division.
Instead, Auburn's offense has struggled all season, prompting Tuberville to fire offensive coordinator Tony Franklin three days before the Tigers lost to Arkansas on Oct. 11.
Tuberville said he heard rumors that he had suffered a stroke, which he denied.
Internet message boards also have questioned Tuberville's desire to continue coaching and recruiting.
"I'm not tired of coaching. I'm fired up as ever," Tuberville said. "You know, I've been here 10 years as head coach. This is my 30th year to coach, and I feel as good right now as I ever had about coaching football and young guys. "I still have that drive."
Seniors receiver Rod Smith and tackle Jason Bosley said the rumors haven't affected the team. Similar rumors surfaced last season when Auburn started the year 1-2 with losses to South Florida and Mississippi State.
"I think that's just the landscape of college football these days," Bosley said. "As soon as any kind of trouble hits any team, the first thing that happens is they talk about the head coach, saying, 'Oh, he's in trouble.' "
While the rumors might have drawn Tuberville's attention, they haven't dulled his wit. "That's a paid political announcement by Tommy Tuberville, by the way," Tuberville said. "Now, we can get on with it after dispelling all those things. "I just wanted to let you know."
From The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer Auburn offense goes "Smash Mouth" AUBURN, Ala. -- If the players' comments are any indication, expect to see more power football out of Auburn when it plays Thursday at West Virginia.
Several players remarked the past two days that the Tigers will be a more aggressive team, now that their coaches have installed an entire offensive game plan.
"I think it will be smash-mouth," quarterback Kodi Burns said. "I think we're going to give our offensive linemen a chance to get in the three-point stance and fire off the ball a little bit more."
While Auburn remains committed to the shotgun spread for future seasons, the rest of this season might feature more of a hybrid offense. Wide receiver Rod Smith said the Tigers will continue to run a no-huddle offense, but they will mix in some "old stuff," referring to last year's run-oriented offense.
Nose guard Tez Doolittle said, "I always heard (left guard) Tyrone Green crying about being in the two-point stance, about how he can't get push and stuff like that," Doolittle said. "So I guess they like having their hand down in the dirt and stuff."
Auburn ranks 69th nationally in rushing offense (135.3 ypg) and 105th in passing offense (157.3 ypg).
Keep it simple One of the biggest criticisms of Franklin's offense was that its thick, complex playbook didn't allow Auburn to properly practice every play. The Tigers simplified the playbook after Franklin's dismissal.
"The big issue is everybody knowing what they're supposed to do," running back Tristan Davis said. "Sometimes, how things were, we were guessing. We really weren't 100 percent sure. You can't play football thinking. You have to be there mentally. You have to know what you have and go do it."
During practices with Franklin, there wasn't enough time to fix mistakes, so the unit moved on to the next play, Smith said. Now, "if we don't get a play right, we're going to keep running it until we get it right," he added.
Must be the shoes Auburn is supposed to wear only licensed Under Armour gear, but Davis is an exception. The running back broke a bone in his foot last year, requiring stabilizing screws to be put on the outside of his right foot. It requires him to wear a shoe with "EE" width, which Under Armor doesn't make. New Balance does, so Davis made the switch and feels more comfortable. To appease the corporate sponsors, though, the team had to spray-paint the shoes white to hide any offending logos.
From WSFA, Oct. 21, 2008 Auburn University Holds Mock Elections AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - Alabama's Republican and Democratic party chairmen were at Auburn University Tuesday evening to take part in the University's Fall Convocation and Mock Elections event.
Mike Hubbard (R) and Joe Turnham (D) debated each other and tried to explain their party's candidates' positions in the upcoming elections.
After the debate folks in attendance participated in a mock election, voting for a U.S. President, Alabama Senator and District 3 Congressman. The mock election, which is sponsored by the AU Honor's College, used a university-designed electronic voting system called Prime III. The system allows folks who might have trouble voting due to a disability the ability to vote in a secure process.
Once all the votes were tallied Republican Presidential nominee John McCain was declared the winner with 53% of the vote. Incumbent Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions (R) beat out opponent Vivian Figures (D) and write-in candidate Aubie, the Auburn Tigers mascot, with 57% of the vote.
And in the District 3 Congressional race incumbent Mike Rogers (R) held onto his seat with 49% of the vote to opponent Josh Segall's (D) 31%. There were several other write-in candidates that helped split the vote.
A second mock debate is set for this coming Wednesday against Alabama Congressman Artur Davis (D) and State Representative Cam Ward (R) at the Alabama State Archives Building in Montgomery.

Get Your Auburn DreamSeat and Support AAC Scholarships
You saw one at the AAC's Game Day event on July 15. It's
another must-have Auburn product -- and this one you can sit in while
watching the Tigers on TV (yes, when you cannot be in Jordan-Hare, a
leather "Auburn" recliner is a real treat -- it even has cup holders!)
DreamSeat
is working with local Auburn clubs to help us raise money for
scholarships. For each chair sold through the AAC, DreamSeat will
donate $125 to our Roy B. Sewell Memorial Scholarship Fund.
And
you get something too! Everyone who orders a chair using the Atlanta
Auburn Club promo code can purchase it at the discounted price of $999
-- they retail on the DreamSeat website for $1,295.
You can order online or by phone, and be sure to ask about their special shipping offer.
