War Eagle from the Atlanta Auburn Club!

Greetings!

Spotted a big banner hanging over I-75 Southbound today with two simple words "Never Forget" - some men above were waving to Atlanta commuters, flags in hand. It was a poignant reminder of this date -- 9/11 -- and its significance. It's also one reason we decided to wait and send this email later in the day.

There are several things coming up that we wanted to let everyone know about. Full details are below. If you have any questions or need further information on anything else, please feel free to email us!

For everyone headed to Starkville --- have a safe trip and don't forget to cheer for the rest of us.

The Campaign Has Started:  Aubie Needs Your Vote in 2008 election!!!

Republicans... Democrats... Independents... What about the Tiger vote?!!!!

Aubie has started his campaign to win this year's Capital One All-American Mascot challenge. He was selected as one of 12 mascots from across the U.S. to compete for the honor of serving as the Nation's best and most recognized mascot! And as always, he'll be happy to pose for pictures, kiss babies and root for Auburn to get your vote....just please, no speeches!!

You don't need a photo ID to cast a ballot... in fact, you don't even have to wait until November! You can vote today...tomorrow...on Saturday, on Tuesday, in fact every day of the way! Heck, how about every day of the month in EVERY month until the voting closes?! (Phew...talk about stuffing the ballot box!)

From the Atlanta Auburn Club's Game Day Event, July 15, 2008 - Photp provided by Village Photographers

Voting started this week and Aubie is already battling an opponent in his first match-up.

Click here to go to the Capital One Bowl website

Then, click on the Vote Now button on the website and follow the instructions. (Be sure to check out the video page where Aubie is featured watching the videos with a bucket of popcorn!) Next week you will also be able to download a widget so that you can keep track of the voting and tallies.

Every Monday, there will be new match-ups of mascots that will go head-to-head in the voting, as well as having the total number of votes that they had last week.

If Aubie wins enough of the match-ups, he will then go on to the playoffs where he will have a chance to win the "golden spatula" and an extra 5000 dollars for the Aubie program

Remember you can vote everyday, but only once a day. So help Aubie spread the word to other Tigers!

Aubie celebrates his 30th birthday on February 28, 2009 -- He wants to WIN this competition!!!!

Book News: Auburn Authors in Atlanta!
Thom Gossom, Jr. at Borders in East Cobb on September 17

image
"Walk-On," a memoir by television and film actor Thom Gossom, Jr. detailing his experiences as the first black athlete to graduate from Auburn University, will be published by Borders under its State Street Press imprint and be available at Borders and Waldenbooks stores and online at Borders.com beginning Tuesday, Sept. 9. A coming-of-age tale about overcoming adversity and gaining success, "Walk-On" not only tells the story of how Gossom earned a spot on Auburn's football team, but it also offers a unique perspective on a major social change sweeping college athletics during the 1970s, showing readers what it was like to be on the front lines of desegregation in the South.

Gossom was Auburn's second black football player, and in 1975, became the university's first black athlete to graduate. He played as a wide receiver on the 1972 team -- dubbed "The Amazins" -- which became one of the most fabled teams in school history, unexpectedly finishing the season with a 10-1 record and #5 ranking in the AP poll.

After moving on to a successful career as an actor and producer after graduation, Gossom was inspired to write "Walk-On," his first book, when he attended a 30th anniversary celebration for "The Amazins" in 2002. Gossom said, "I realized something the night of that reunion. After being away from Auburn for decades, I remembered what an important part of my life -- and of our country's history -- that period was. I think we all appreciated more what we had gone through together back then and how much we really meant to each other, and this book was my way of honoring my teammates."

Born and raised in Birmingham, Ala., Thom Gossom, Jr. is a television and film actor and producer who has appeared on numerous television series, including "Boston Legal," "Cold Case," "NYPD Blue" and "In the Heat of the Night;" and feature films, such as "Fight Club," "Jeepers Creepers II" and "Miss Evers' Boys." In 2004, Gossom founded Best Gurl Entertainment, which produced his acclaimed play, "Speak of Me As I Am."

Auburn and Atlanta's own Paul Hemphill Publishes New Book on Tigers

Paul Hemphill has contacted the Atlanta Auburn Club about his new coffee table book on Auburn football. The author of 16 books, he was sports editor of the Plainsman during Auburn's 1957 championship season. Paul had to postpone a planned book signing, but will let us know when it has been rescheduled so that we can pass the word to all the metro Atlanta Tigers.

In the meantime, you can purchase his book on Amazon.com. It can also be ordered from the publisher by calling 1-800-621-2736. In Atlanta, A Cappella Books, in Little Five Points, also has the book. You can also check out Paul's website at www.PaulHemphill.net

AU Football Notes for Saturday's Game

No. 9 AUBURN (2-0, 0-0) at MISSISSIPPI STATE (1-1, 0-0) Saturday (ESPN2 -7pmET) Davis Wade Stadium Starkville, Miss. -- LINE: Auburn by 10

-- SERIES: Auburn leads 56-23-2.

-- GAME WITHIN THE GAME: Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom has already promised that the Bulldogs will kick away from Robert Dunn. Southern Miss did the same thing last week. If so, Auburn may have already won the special-teams battle. Auburn punter Clinton Durst is booming sky-high kicks that are frequently fair-caught. Dunn is forcing opponents to amend their punt strategies. In games that are decided by field position, Auburn has an important edge.

-- STAT OF THE WEEK: Although Auburn has played Georgia, Georgia Tech and Florida more times than it has played Mississippi State, the Tigers have more wins against the Bulldogs than they do against any other team. Auburn's 56 victories over Mississippi State are three more than the Tigers have over Georgia, even though Auburn has played Mississippi State in 30 fewer games than it has played Georgia.

-- GAME NOTES: The teams have met every season since 1955. ... Auburn leads the series 10-4-1 in Starkville. ... Auburn has a 22-1 record when ranked and playing unranked Mississippi State, with the lone loss coming in 1963. ... Mississippi State hasn't scored 20 points in any of its past nine games against Auburn. ... Auburn has a 41-28-5 record in SEC openers. ... Auburn has a 5-0 record under Tommy Tuberville when its SEC opener has been on the road. ... Auburn OT Jason Bosley is the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week. ... RB Anthony Dixon moved to 10th on Mississippi State's career rushing list last week. ... Mississippi State CB Derek Pegues ranks seventh on the SEC career list for kickoff-return yards and sixth in total kick-return yards. ... WR Rod Smith needs three receptions and 52 receiving yards to reach the top 10 in each category on Auburn's career lists. ... Smith has averaged 28.7 yards on his seven career receptions against Mississippi State. ... Auburn's opponents have converted only three of their 32 third-down plays this season. ... . Mississippi State's roster includes WR Aubrey Bell of Blount, QB Todd Kilpatrick of Monroe Academy, RB Arnil Stallworth of Daphne and DB Louis Watson of St. Paul's. ... Auburn has a 3-1 record on Sept. 16.

-- QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "The only thing that's been in my mind is we have something to prove down there in Starkville. They came down to our house (last year) with a chip on their shoulder and came away with a victory. We have to do the same thing." - Auburn CB Jerraud Powers

From ESPN.com's Chris Low, Sept 8, 2008
Don't Forget about Auburn's Defense

Everywhere you go in Auburn these days, they're talking offense.

Is this new no-huddle, spread attack going to cut it? Are the Tigers equipped to run the spread? Is Chris Todd going to hold onto the quarterback job? How does Kodi Burns react now that he's lost the job?

In short, are the Tigers good enough on offense to win the SEC this season? I'll be the first to admit, having seen the Tigers in person last weekend, I can't answer that question. Not yet, anyway. What I can tell you unequivocally is that their defense is definitely good enough to win the SEC. The Tigers are deep, fast, experienced and a tad ornery.

"Not many people are giving Auburn any respect," junior defensive end Antonio Coleman said. "We're No. 9 in the country, and people are picking us to lose. We have a chip on our shoulder, and that's how it's going to be every week."

The Tigers were suffocating defensively last Saturday in building a 24-0 lead against Southern Miss. Coleman said they lost their focus a little bit in the second half, but still held the Golden Eagles to 37 rushing yards a week after they gained 427 on the ground against Louisiana-Lafayette.

"They came out with a little bit more enthusiasm than us in the second half, and we're going to have to pick it up down the road," Coleman said. "You can't let that happen in the SEC. It's time to get down to business."

That business begins this weekend when Auburn travels to Mississippi State.

Did You Know?
There are nearly 100 local Auburn Clubs throughout the country, and through these groups alums have the opportunity to participate in various fund-raising activities either directly for their local club scholarship or towards the Association's Endowed Scholarship.  In 2005-2006, more than $178,000 was raised by local clubs for students in their areas to attend Auburn.

Circle of Excellence
A new 'giving' society for life members, the Circle of Excellence opens the door to contribute directly to the Alumni Association Endowment fund, which provides several full-tuition scholarships to first-year Auburn students. With a $1,000 starting contribution level (pledged over 3 years), the 3-tier society allows these Alums to know that they've contributed to Auburn's efforts to bring deserving students to The Plains.

How can I give?
Just make your tax-deductible contribution to the 'Auburn University Foundation', designating your local club scholarship or the Alumni Association Endowment in the "Notes" line of your check. Or if you prefer give online and choose "Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship" as your gift designation or specify your local club scholarship in the 'note other gift area here' space..
