AAC's Kickoff Event on July 15 with Coach Tuberville a BIG Success! Attendance Doubles for Atlanta Auburn Club's Annual Scholarship Fundraising Event
Photo contributed by Village Photographers, Auburn, AL
An estimated 700-800 Auburn Tigers joined the Atlanta Auburn Club at the Cobb Galleria Convention Center on Tuesday, July 15, for a night of Auburn fun, Auburn fans and Auburn football! If you missed it - you missed one of our biggest nights ever!
Thanks to everyone who attended, including our special guests: AU Football Coach Tommy Tuberville, University President Dr. Jay Gogue, VP of Alumni Affairs Debbie Shaw, VP for Development Jeff McNeil and many other members of the Office of Development, ALUM Board VP-elect Mike Watson, and ALUM Board members Burt Cloud and Janet Mertz, Auburn Professor John Penick, Aubie, the AU cheerleaders, Rod Bramblett, Paul Ellen, Inside the Auburn Tigers' Mark Murphy, and 680 The Fan.
Special thanks, too, and a big "War Eagle!" to all the Auburn Football Lettermen who joined us that evening, including Loran Carter, Jack Langford, Bill Van Dyke, Mac Lorendo, Chuck Hurston, Erich Sauerbrey, Tom Bryan, Bucky Ayers, Wayne Bylsma, Joe Davis, Reid Trapani and Kelsey Crook.
Thanks also goes to Auburn University and the ALUM Association, Anders Bookstore, Tiger Rags, Village Photographers, and all our FANtastic vendors for coming out to support our efforts.
Rally Foundation told us yesterday that a total of $850 was raised in the "4 Quarters 4 Research" drive which helps fund children's cancer research. We will be doing this again in the Fall, so stay tuned! The friends of Lauren Burk also told us it was their biggest night ever for sales of Lauren Burk memorial wristbands -- proceeds raised at our event will benefit the Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Fund at Auburn University.
It
was also great to see all three AAC scholarship recipients - Justin
Neisler, Taylor Benz and Anna Campbell - you can read more about each
of them on our website!!
And last but not least, heartfelt thanks to all our Atlanta Auburn Club volunteers --- this event had more heavylifting and more work than any event we have ever held. It can be said that the success of any group is largely a reflection of the volunteers who donate their time and energy to it. The Atlanta Auburn Club is blessed with an ever growing group of volunteers that are the absolute best! This event would not have been possible without the help of each and every one of them!! War Eagle!!
Village Photographers got a lot of great photos from the event! You can check them out now and order your copies on the web -- it's fast and it's easy! Just click here to go to www.villagephotographers.com -- then go to the "Special Events" area, and find "Atlanta Auburn Club Game Day" event -- the password is WAREAGLE.

This year's event was a big move for the club and A LOT more work for our volunteers. In general, we think it was a big success - it was certainly our biggest crowd ever! Despite out best efforts and months of planning, we know there were a couple hiccups. Your feedback will help us make this event even better next year! Thanks for your help and War Eagle!

In the Headlines: Late Breaking Auburn News...and more
From oanow.com: July 22, 2008 Foxhall, Heath Rejoin Pawlowski on Auburn Baseball Staff When John Pawlowski was hired as Auburn's new baseball coach June 20, Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said the reason was simple. Pawlowski's accomplishments at College of Charleston - including three NCAA Tournament appearances - earned him the job at Auburn. And who better to help Pawlowski continue his remarkable run than two of the men who made his success at Charleston possible?
On Tuesday, AU announced the hiring of Scott Foxhall and Matt Heath as Pawlowski's two assistant coaches. The duo coached with Pawlowski at Charleston for a combined 12 seasons. Foxhall worked with Pawlowski for each of his nine seasons at Charleston, serving as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. He's likely to fill both roles at AU. Heath coached the Cougars' hitters for the past three seasons. Both hires had been rumored for weeks before being announced in a Tuesday press release.
"I am really excited about bringing Scott and Matt on board here at Auburn," Pawlowski said in a statement released by the school. "I think they will be great additions to the Auburn baseball program. They both have a tremendous amount of energy and experience, which will have an immediate impact on our program."
The hiring is a kind of homecoming for Foxhall, a Greer, S.C., native who started his college career as an Auburn walk-on in 1991. He transferred to Charleston after the '91 season and played three years for the Cougars.
In Foxhall's nine seasons at Charleston, 19 Cougars pitchers were selected in the Major League Baseball draft. He coached four Southern League Pitchers of the Year.
Heath has Southeastern Conference experience as a player: He spent two seasons at Florida (1999-2000) and two at LSU (2001-02). As Charleston's hitting coach, he helped the Cougars set school records in runs scored, RBI, home runs and hits. In 2008, Charleston led the nation in home runs and runs scored per game and ranked 10th nationally in batting average.

From Birmingham News posted on al.com July 22, 2008 Lightning Strike Destroys Home of Auburn Track Coach Lightning and a subsequent fire destroyed the home of Auburn track coach Ralph Spry late Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured, according to Auburn athletics.
Spry's wife, Ann, and their daughter, Tiffany, were in the house when the lightning hit. Ralph Spry was out of town, but immediately returned to Auburn.
Spry has been at Auburn since late 1997 and has won a national championship and has numerous Top 5 finishes at the NCAA Championships.
*** Posted by Charles Goldberg, Birmingham News on al.com Auburn's Marks, Shoemaker First-team All-SEC Auburn defensive lineman Sen'Derrick Marks and punter Ryan Shoemaker are the two Auburn players named to the coaches' All-SEC preseason football first team, which was announced on Monday.
Auburn had five players named second-team All-SEC. It had one named to the third team. That's a total eight Tigers named among the 81 players named to the All-SEC first, second and third teams. (LSU led with 14 players. Florida had 10.)
What does this mean in comparison to all the other All-SEC teams? Probably not too much, if you believe that few head coaches actually do the voting. We believe that. Of the 81 players named to the first, second and third teams, six are sophomores, 35 are juniors and 40 are seniors.

Auburn Adds Ball State to '09 Schedule
On Monday, Ball State became the third acknowledged opponent on AU's
non-conference schedule for '09, joining West Virginia and Furman.
According to a press release issued by Ball State's athletic
department, the game is scheduled for Sept. 26, 2009 at Jordan-Hare
Stadium.
Auburn is 2-0 against Ball State, with a 30-0 win in 2001 and a 63-3 victory in 2005, both at home.
Only one open slot remains on AU's 12-game regular-season schedule for
2009. All three of the currently scheduled non-conference games will be
played at Jordan-Hare, along with SEC games against Alabama, Ole Miss,
Mississippi State and Kentucky.
AU will play SEC road games at Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee and Georgia in 2009.

New England Patriots Sign CB Auburn's Jonathan Wilhite FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots have signed fourth-round draft pick Jonathan Wilhite. The Patriots did not release the terms of the deal reached on Thursday. Wilhite is one of two cornerbacks the Patriots landed in April's draft, along with second-round pick Terrence Wheatley.
The 5-foot-11-inch, 185-pound Wilhite was taken with the 129th pick. The 24-year-old played three seasons at Auburn after attending Butler County (Kan.) Community College. In 34 games (23 starts) at Auburn, he had 101 tackles, a sack, 3 interceptions, and 14 passes defended. New England drafted the 24-year-old player as a potential replacement for departing defensive back Asante Samuel or Randall Gay.
*** From the Montgomery Advertiser SEC Race Could Be Wide Open Football season hit its unofficial opening day Wednesday, when Southeastern Conference coaches began making their pitches at Media Days. A sprawling Hoover ballroom, for three days only, becomes a wondrous place where every team has legitimate title hopes and fortunes always are on the rise.
Optimism may be justified this time around. Preseason magazines have exhibited unusual confusion about the Southeastern Conference's pecking order. All four major preseason magazines -- Lindy's, Athlon Sports, Sporting News and Phil Steele's College Football Preview -- consider Georgia or Florida the nation's best team. Everything else is a jumbled mess.
"This could be the most interesting season I've seen in the SEC," said Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, entering his 14th year in the league. "You've got half the teams that, honestly, could make a strong case to win it all. It'll be a great year to be a fan. I've never seen it this balanced."
When all four magazine polls were combined, six SEC teams made the cut. Georgia and Florida each snagged two No. 1 votes while LSU (No. 8), Auburn (No. 11), Tennessee (No. 21) and Alabama (No. 25) also earned substantial recognition.
The SEC's Western Division has taxed prognosticators to their limit. No two magazines printed the same order of finish in the West, though Auburn and LSU split votes at the top.
Auburn returns 15 of its 22 starters in addition to kicker Wes Byrum and punter Ryan Shoemaker. The entire offensive front and both tailbacks are back. Defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks, whom Sporting News considers the league's top NFL prospect, will lead a defense loaded with talent and depth up front. Understanding how the defense will operate is tricky.
Auburn's season-opening game against Louisiana-Monroe will be new defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads' first game with the Tigers. Hired away from Pittsburgh in February, Rhoads' spring work showed only minor deviations from what predecessor Will Muschamp had been using since 2006.
New offensive coordinator Tony Franklin radically overhauled the team's attack just days before a win against Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. That yielded a 423-yard performance that gave Franklin an instant dose of assurance. Analysts have taken notice.
Steele lists the Tigers as a "darkhorse national title contender" and considers Auburn his No. 4 surprise team. Lindy's also interpreted the Chick-fil-A Bowl as a sign of major progress, insisting that "a 9-win season (is) the lowest of expectations."

How Do You Show Your Auburn Spirit? Send the AAC Your Photos!

A very special email is making the rounds and found its way to the inbox of the AAC. It's from U.S. Army Lt. Justin Cobb, who had the opportunity to meet Coach Tuberville during the recent Coaches Tour of US Troops. He wins our award for the best display of Auburn Spirit! (He even got Georgia Bulldog Coach Mark Richt to pose for a photo....with his AUBURN flag!!! LOL!)

LT Cobb gladly reported in the email: "Even in the Persian Gulf, the Auburn Family is strong. I was able to visit with the Coach for about 45 minutes on the flight line before attending a formal meet and greet on base later that day. He signed my flight helmet, passed out Auburn 'Challenge Coins' (valuable military souvenirs) and even gladly posed with me holding the 'Hey Bama' sign... it was incredible to see Coach Tuberville out here, and Auburn was the best represented of all the schools in attendance. Auburn was the only school giving out Challenge coins, Under Armour t-shirts, footballs, and more, while schools like Notre Dame gave out last years left over t-shirts, and schools like Alabama didn't show up at all..."
The Atlanta Auburn Club has not been able to reach LT Cobb yet - but we hope a copy of our email reaches him! WAR EAGLE! to ALL our U.S. Troops!

A Fairy Tale Ending: Coach Pat Dye Reunited with His...Pants?! By Kenneth Boone and Carl Holcomb/ Lake Martin Magazine
We're going to put this as delicately as possible: Pat Dye lost his pants.
And his wallet. And his car keys.
Twenty-three years later, Shannon McDuffie found them, setting off a remarkable, humorous and fortuitous chain of events with a fairy tale ending.
Last winter, when a record-breaking drought pushed lake levels down 15 feet below full pool, people begin hunting for all sorts of things on the lake's suddenly-wide shoreline.
Shannon McDuffie was one of those who went hunting one warm day in December.
She was in the Emerald Shores area near Still Waters looking for old bottles along the water's edge when she came upon an object sticking out of the mud. As she reached down to retrieve it, she realized it was a pair of golf pants. They weren't just any golf pants either. They were big-check green-and-blue Madras pants, like something you'd expect to find in Rodney Dangerfield's trailer on the set of Caddy Shack.
As McDuffie picked up the pants, she found a mud-caked, alligator leather wallet in one of the pockets. She rushed straight home with the leather-bound treasure to wash it off and see what she had unearthed. (Unlaked? Demudded?)
A little cleaning revealed a number of credit cards from the mid '80s: an Alabama driver's license, an honorary Alabama State Trooper card, a Delta Frequent Flyer card, a Chevron "government credit card" with that included these exact words: " University of Auburn Athletic ." The wallet also included American Express, Visa and Gulf credit cards.
All the cards bore the same name: Patrick Fain Dye.
"Patrick Fain Dye - who is that?" McDuffie said she asked herself. "Then I got to thinking, Pat Dye, Pat Dye, there was a Dye who was an Auburn coach ... and about that time my husband came home from work and we both suddenly realized, in fact, that this was a wallet that once belonged to the famous Auburn football coach Pat Dye.
"After we had shared all the excitement with my mom and dad, we got in our golf cart and rode back down to the lake to retrieve the pants that were left in the mud," McDuffie said. "In the golf pants, which were still folded and had retained their crease, we also found a set of Toyota car keys, an Auburn football helmet key chain and a plain white handkerchief."
In case you've been stuck in the mud for the past couple of decades, Pat Dye is a national football figure, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and something of a legend in Alabama .
Dye was head football coach at Auburn University for 12 seasons, from 1981 to 1992. As a head coach at three universities, his career football record was 153-62-5 in 19 years.
Dye started out on the gridiron as an All-State and All-American high school lineman on the Richmond Academy team that won the 1956 Georgia 3A state championship title. In college, he was twice selected for All-American honors while playing for the Georgia Bulldogs and was named the Most Valuable Lineman in the SEC in 1960. After college, Dye played three years as linebacker for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League. He worked for coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, serving as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama from 1965 to 1973, and went on to head coaching jobs at East Carolina and Wyoming before landing in Auburn as head coach from 1981-1992. Dye won 71 percent of the games he coached at Auburn, piling up a 99-39-4 record, making him the third winningest football coach at Auburn behind Mike Donahue and Ralph "Shug" Jordan. He won four Southeastern Conference championship titles and was the SEC Coach of the Year three times.
Dye retired as Auburn 's athletic director and head football coach after an intense NCAA investigation into Auburn boosters making payments to a player. He's now employed by Auburn University as a special assistant to the president and spends a considerable amount of time managing his property. The 786-acre track where he lives called Crooked Oaks, and a adjacent 740-acre commercial hunting plantation called Auburn Oaks, are located in the small community of Notasulga, about 10 miles southwest of Auburn and about 20 miles southeast of Lake Martin.
McDuffie said her first reaction was to contact Coach Dye and ask him if he would like his wallet returned. It turned out to be easier said than done. With the aid of her bosses' wife, Gail Butcher, McDuffie attempted to contact Pat Dye and relay information about the wallet being recovered. Unfortunately, while Dye did eventually hear about the wallet's recovery, McDuffie and Coach Dye never made contact until Lake magazine got involved with the story.
So now we're back to the delicate part of the story.
"Coach, how'd you lose your pants?" we asked.
"Was there any money in there?" he answered.
Not surprisingly, Coach Dye said he has no recollection of losing his wallet or his pants. This was the Reagan era, after all.
And it was more than 20 years ago.
And really, who would 'fess up to a question like that, especially after seeing those pants.
"Well, I had a place in Still Waters in the early 80s ... I don't remember losing it, but now listen, that was a long time ago," Dye said in a telephone interview.
Lake arranged for a photo shoot with McDuffie and the coach at Dye's home in Notasulga.
When the two met, Coach Dye was pleasant, courteous, interested and at times, amused.
"Is that the wallet?" he asked after they greeted each other.
McDuffie said yes and held it out to him. The two stood together, shuffling through the expired credit cards with laminated covers that had separated and come apart.
They looked over the loot for a while, then took a tour of Dye's home, which ended up on a rock bridge over a small waterfall that flowed into his pond.
McDuffie held up the raggedy, mud-stained pants.
"I do remember those pants," Dye said, smiling and holding them out to give them the once-over.
"I don't have any idea how I lost 'em ... but we can make up a good story," he said, breaking into a smile.
"Tell you what let's do, you can be my guest and come to the Blue Jean Ball and auction them off," Dye said. "Everything that was in my pants."
McDuffie's face lit up and she quickly agreed.
The Blue Jean Ball is an annual event held every year on the weekend of the Auburn-LSU football game. The exclusive and expensive charity event is held at Auburn Oaks, one of Dye's properties, to benefit the Auburn University School of Nursing. This year it will be held on Friday, Sept. 19.
And so, when you really think about it, what Shannon McDuffie pulled out of the muddy Lake Martin shoreline back in December was ... an invitation to a ball.
If that's not a fairy tale ending, we don't know what is. |

AU Campaign Raises More Than $608 Million

AUBURN - Auburn University ended its "It Begins at Auburn" Campaign this spring by raising a record $608,862,727. By June of 2007, nine months ahead of schedule, the campaign had already passed its goal of raising half a billion dollars.
All colleges and schools and athletics exceeded their individual goals.
"This is the largest campaign in the university's history, and the largest in the state's history," said Jay Gogue, Auburn University president. "I am proud of the Auburn family for making it such a huge success. Every gift, whether one dollar or one million dollars, shows the strong connection that our alumni, friends, staff and faculty feel for their university."
Contributions were made by 75,664 donors, and the total represents pledges and deferred and outright gifts. Of the total donors, 50,114 were alumni, with the remainder consisting of corporations, foundations and friends of the university.
There were 117 gifts of $1 million or more totaling more than $286 million, or 47 percent of the campaign total. An additional 29 percent of the campaign's gifts were from donations of $100,000 to $999,999.
Of the nearly $609 million contributed to the university throughout the campaign, $191 million went to student support, $36 million to faculty support, $72 million to facilities and $310 million to programmatic support. Endowed dollars account for 32 percent of the campaign's total.
"The success of this campaign would not have been possible without the efforts of the faculty and staff, the development office, the deans of our colleges and schools, and the 653 volunteers who led the effort," said Samuel Ginn, campaign co-chair and a member of the AU Board of Trustees. "Private funding must continue at even greater levels and Auburn University needs to build its endowment at an even stronger rate."
Regional campaigns, the first of their kind for the university, were also a large part of the success of the larger campaign. A total of $64 million was raised among the 28 regional efforts across the country.
"The regional campaigns brought Auburn alumni and friends together from as far away as California and New York. The momentum they built for the university will continue for years to come," said Campaign Co-chair Sally Jones Hill. "I want to thank everyone involved in this campaign from donors to all who worked so hard for its huge success. The students of today and all of those to come in the future will benefit greatly from their generosity."
The public phase of the campaign began on Feb. 3, 2006. |

Alumni directory to be published in 2009 The Auburn Alumni Association is working with research firm Harris Connect to publish the 2009 AU Alumni Directory. From now through July, alumni will be contacted either by mail, email or telephone to verify basic information such as names, addresses, graduation years and majors. Alumni may also vote for the directory's cover, and submit photos and favorite Auburn memories for possible publication. For more, click here.
Did You Know? There are nearly 100 local Auburn Clubs throughout the country, and through these groups alums have the opportunity to participate in various fund-raising activities either directly for their local club scholarship or towards the Association's Endowed Scholarship. In 2005-2006, more than $178,000 was raised by local clubs for students in their areas to attend Auburn.
Circle of Excellence A new 'giving' society for life members, the Circle of Excellence opens the door to contribute directly to the Alumni Association Endowment fund, which provides several full-tuition scholarships to first-year Auburn students. With a $1,000 starting contribution level (pledged over 3 years), the 3-tier society allows these Alums to know that they've contributed to Auburn's efforts to bring deserving students to The Plains.
How can I give? Just make your tax-deductible contribution to the 'Auburn University Foundation', designating your local club scholarship or the Alumni Association Endowment in the "Notes" line of your check. Or if you prefer give online and choose "Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship" as your gift designation or specify your local club scholarship in the 'note other gift area here' space..
