Greetings!
Okay, a quick show of hands --- how many metro area and state of Georgia Tigers are planning to join us for our BIG Scholarship Fundraising Kickoff Event with Coach Tuberville?!! The list of Tigers coming over from Auburn for this event is still growing... and this one night could rank as our biggest ever. So, we hope we'll see you at the Cobb/Galleria Convention Center on Tuesday, July 15.
How can you help us make this event a success? If you are planning on attending, please let us know -- either with pre-paid reservations or an email with the number of Tigers that will be paying at the door -- we want to make sure we have sufficient concession stands and cash bars for the expected turnout.

There are also some great new AAC specials listed in this edition, including a 20% discount on online orders from Tiger Rags.
The Atlanta Auburn Club wants to welcome a new scholarship supporter to our Auburn Tiger team -- Total Quality Services, Inc. We'll feature it in our "Show Us Your Spirit" section of an upcoming edition of the newsletter.
We've got to back to work on the Tuberville event...there's lots to do between now and the 15th -- we'll let you know about any updates before then.
Have a great weekend everyone! And best wishes for a safe and Happy Fourth of July!

 This
year, The Atlanta Auburn Club is joining together with Rally Foundation

popular 4 Quarters 4 Research -- a program that already has seen the
participation of more than 140 schools. What do you do?

and pennies! Check the bottom of your purse, under the cushions of the
couch, and under the seat of your car! Then, bring the bag of change
with you to our BIG Game Day Event with Coach Tuberville on Tuesday,

physicians, scientists and nurses at 200 hospitals nationwide. These
physicians and nurses treat more than 90% of the children in the U.S.
with cancer. Eighty percent are enrolled in clinical
trials.
It's
our hope that this effort will be the start of an ongoing community
service project for the AAC. Metro area Tigers can also help spread the
word, by encouraging their local schools and/or places of employment to
hold their own 4 Quarters fundraisers.

Extreme "Tree" Makeover to Help Toomer's Corner Oaks
Two of Auburn's best-known trees, the Toomer's Corner live oaks, are about to get a facelift and more. Live oak specialists from the regional office of Bartlett Tree Experts in Tucker, Georgia, went to Auburn to perform a horticultural version of "Extreme Makeover" on the historic trees.
Bartlett personnel evaluated the structural integrity of the trees, remove ddead or damaged limbs, installed cables to brace weak branches, broke up compacted soil around the roots, added organic matter and fertilizer around the base, and treated for insects.
"We hope to improve the condition of the Toomer's oaks through this work," said Auburn horticulture professor Gary Keever, who is helping the AU Facilities Division develop a long-term care plan for the iconic trees.
The trees have been a fixture in Auburn for more than a century, and live oaks often live for 400 years or more. In addition to the stresses common to urban trees, the Toomer's oaks are further endangered by their most dedicated advocates - tens of thousands of football fans who celebrate victories by tossing rolls of toilet paper over the trees after every victory in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Several times in recent years, people have also set fire to the paper, causing further damage to the trees.
The morning after each celebration, cleanup crews wash away the toilet paper with high-pressure hoses. This knocks many leaves and buds off the trees, putting additional stress on them.
In an unintended but beneficial side effect of the post-celebration cleanups in 2007, the damage was partially offset by water reaching the roots of the trees during some of the driest conditions on record. Keever said the inadvertent watering paid dividends this spring, when the trees put out substantial new growth.
However, the horticulture professor noted that high-pressure hosing is not the best way to water trees, even during a drought. If football fans could find an alternative to draping the trees in toilet paper, the Toomer's oaks could rapidly be restored to good health and a long life, he said.
Despite signs of decline over the past decade, Keever said the trees are far from being candidates for the chipper, as evidenced by a flush of dark green foliage. The larger tree has even shown signs of recovery from a gaping wound incurred a few years ago, when a vehicle crashed into it.
AU foresters are growing young trees from acorns harvested from the two oaks, but Cathy Love of AU Campus Planning and Space Management said replacement trees would probably not last long in that vicinity unless conditions change. "If there were no change in the tradition of rolling Toomer's Corner, we would have many of the same problems with new trees," she said.
Love and Keever said various groups and individuals are looking for a long-term solution that would preserve both the trees and the tradition. In the meantime, they said, the university is taking steps, such as the current treatment, to improve growing conditions for the trees.

These individually boxed ornaments, which are now being handcrafted by artisans in Poland, are made of hand blown glass and each is also painted by hand.
This exclusive collector's edition has been approved by collegiate licensing. It will be produced in a limited quantity, and it will NOT be available in any retail stores. You can purchase it ONLY through the Atlanta Auburn Club. And we expect it to sell very fast.

In the News: "Evidence" the Zebra has Emergency Surgery at Auburn
On Monday, June 23, Noah's Ark rushed Evidence, the metro area's favorite zebra back to Auburn for emergency surgery to correct a life threatening situation.
The Auburn team performed a permanent urethrostomy, a procedure done successfully in domestic animals that provides an alternate way to eliminate urine. Evidence had sustained a severed urethra and other serious injuries when he was hit by a car on an Atlanta metro interstate highway.
After surgery, Evidence had a long, anxious night, but he improved enough that the veterinary staff at Auburn were able to let him go home the next day. Noah's Ark says, this time, the young Zebra rode to and from Auburn in a two-horse trailer that was made possible through generous donations.
Evidence is scheduled to make his public debut at Noah's Ark on Saturday, July 12 at noon.
Noah's Ark has invited the Atlanta Auburn Club and AAC members to come tour the habitat. They are open Tuesday-Saturday from Noon-3:00 p.m.

Noah's Ark, in Locust Grove, is 250-acre home to more than 1,000 special animals which were unwanted, abused or neglected --- including lions, TIGERS and bears. It is also an admission-free attraction for the public. For more info about Noah's Ark click here or call 770-957-0888.

This Just In! Late-breaking Auburn News...
XM Radio Adds Auburn to SEC Sports Lineup!
AUBURN -- Some welcome and long-awaited news for Tiger fans who are XM subscribers...
On Tuesday, XM Satellite Radio added Auburn, Florida, Vanderbilt and Alabama to its SEC sports lineup. This means fans can now get sports broadcasts of all 12 conference schools during the football, basketball and baseball seasons. Florida was scheduled to join the XM lineup next year, but the XM-Sirius merger accelerated the timetable. Auburn and Alabama were exclusive to Sirius before the new deal was announced this week.
The XM package of SEC games began with seven conference schools participating in 2007. South Carolina joined the mix in 2008.
"Our relationship with XM Satellite Radio provides the opportunity to extend the SEC brand to an expanding national audience," said Mike Slive, SEC commissioner. "We are particularly pleased that now all 12 SEC member institutions will now be participating in the conference-wide agreement."
XM carries the home broadcast of every SEC team and reaches an audience of 9.3 million subscribers. The new deal also gives XM exclusive radio broadcast rights to the league's championships in football, baseball and both men's and women's basketball.
XM has similar deals with the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-10.

Two AU Swimmers Make U.S. Olympic Team
OMAHA, Nebraska -- Former Tiger All-American Mark Gangloff became the first Auburn swimmer to earn a spot on the United States Olympic Team as he finished second in the 100-meter breaststroke Monday night. Gangloff posted a time of 1:00.42 to finish second in the event behind Brendan Hansen, who swam 59.93. Gangloff earned a gold medal in 2004 at the Olympics in Athens by swimming the breaststroke leg on the 400-meter medley relay.
Former Auburn swimmer Margaret Hoelzer became the second Tiger to make the U.S. Olympic team when she finished second in the 100-meter backstroke Tuesday night. The Huntsville native entered the event as the No. 3 seed and was picked to finish behind Coughlin and Hayley McGregory, both one-time world-record holders in the event. Hoelzer trailed both Coughlin and McGregory at the turn, but swam a blazing 29.96 in the second 50 meters, the fastest in the heat, to pass McGregory and earn a spot on the Olympic team.
*** U.S. News & World Report Lists Auburn as Top 10 Place Nationwide for Golf Loving Retirees
AUBURN -- Auburn's proximity to Grand National in Opelika, part of
the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, has earned it a Top 10 spot on a new ranking by U.S.
News & World Report, which scoured 1,000 of the best places to retire in
the U.S.
The accessibility and
"playability" of the 54 holes at Grand National might be reasons why
the local golfing destination is the only one from the Auburn-Opelika
area mentioned in the online article, Scott Gomberg, director of
golf at Grand National, told the O-A News.
"There's a lot of golf out here,"
Gomberg said, noting Grand National's 18-hole, par-3 golf course and
its six sets of tee boxes that provide golfing options for all ages.
