Save Your Spare Change & Bring It to AAC's "Game Day" Event July 15!!! AAC Adopts "4 Quarters 4 Research" Project to Benefit Children's Cancer Research
This year, The Atlanta Auburn Club is joining together with Rally Foundation to help raise money for children's cancer research through the group's popular 4 Quarters 4 Research -- a program that already has seen the participation of more than 140 schools.
What do you do? Get a Ziploc bag and start saving your spare quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies! Check the bottom of your purse, under the cushions of the couch, and under the seat of your car! Then, bring the bag of change with you to our BIG Game Day Event with Coach Tuberville on Tuesday, July 15. Adults...children...everyone can participate! Rally Foundation, which includes the involvement of A LOT of Auburn alumni, will be with us that evening.

Rally gives 100% of net proceeds to fund all phases of childhood cancer research. It helps fund the collaborative research of more than 5,000 physicians, scientists and nurses at 200 hospitals nationwide. These physicians and nurses treat more than 90% of the children in the U.S. with cancer. Eighty percent of these children are enrolled in clinical trials.
It's our hope that this effort will be the start of an ongoing community service project for the AAC. Metro area Tigers can also help spread the word, by encouraging their local schools and/or places of employment to hold their own 4 Quarters fundraisers.
Want to read more about all the great work Rally is doing...and all the great people supporting this effort --- Click Here to visit the Rally Foundation website.

What a Great Day to Be an Auburn Tiger!
Special Thanks to Everyone Who Joined Us for Our Annual Gofl TournamentThe Atlanta Auburn Club wants to thank all the golfers, volunteers, sponsors and hole sponsors who supported our 17th Annual Roy B. Sewell Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament, which was held last Monday at Windermere Golf Club in Cumming. It was a great day on the fairways -- though the heat was an added challenge this year.
Extra special thanks to AAC corporate sponsor The Settings at West Point Lake which was the title sponsor of our golf tournament this year. We'd also like to thank and shout out a "War Eagle!" to Tiger Rags, Andy MacDaniel and Slopes BBQ, Kim Dykes and Jason's Deli, Milo's Famous Tea, and The Coca-Cola Company for their support of our efforts. And thanks also goes to the fantastic staff at Windermere Golf Club for helping us host yet another great tournament!
The AAC also wants to thank Rod Bramblett and Paul Ellen from the Auburn Network for joining us again -- and thanks, too, to our great friend Mr. David Irons, Sr., who rode around the course with us and had a chance to talk some football (and provide updates on Kenny and David, Jr.) with the golfers.
Last but not least, we greatly appreciate that so many representatives of the Auburn Alumni Association, club coordinator D'ablo Hunter, and ALUM Board members Mike Watson, Janet Mertz and Burt Cloud, were able to join us.
Here are some of the great photos we have from a fun day on the course! (We'll have more in the next email newsletter!).

Atlanta Auburn Club Announces Exclusive, Limited Edition Ornament Sales of this AAC Exclusive to Benefit Club's Scholarship Fund
The Atlanta Auburn Club is pleased to announce an exciting new exclusive club effort that's aimed at helping us raise more funds for scholarships for metro area students to attend Auburn University! This special ornament program has already been quite successful for an Ohio State club --- and now we've joined on as the second member of the "team" and the exclusive Auburn representative.
We wanted the theme of this year's ornament to be special, so our AAC design team chose one that is among the most beloved Auburn traditions and perhaps the most difficult to tackle design-wise: Toomer's Corner! We provided a number of photos to the artist (who is licensed by Auburn) and worked closely with her on what the ornament should look like. We hope that everyone will be as pleased as we are with the results! Photos are below.
These individually boxed ornaments, which are now being handcrafted by artisans in Poland, are made of hand blown glass and each is also painted by hand.
This exclusive collector's edition has been approved by collegiate licensing. It will be produced in a limited quantity, and it will NOT be available in any retail stores. You can purchase it ONLY through the Atlanta Auburn Club. And we expect it to sell very fast.
Anyone can purchase this ornament, but 2008 Atlanta Auburn Club members will be able to buy it at a members only discount, so if you haven't renewed your membership -- now is the time to do it!
More details still to come, and we will begin accepting pre-paid orders for this ornament very soon -- so be sure to keep an eye on the club email newsletters! No orders will be accepted until that time.

Just in Time for Summer: AU Researchers Give Flip-Flops a Failing Grade
Auburn University researchers have found that wearing thong-style flip-flops can result in sore feet, ankles and legs. The research team, led by biomechanics doctoral student Justin Shroyer, presented its findings at the recent annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Indianapolis.
"We found that when people walk in flip-flops, they alter their gait, which can result in problems and pain from the foot up into the hips and lower back," Shroyer said. "Variations like this at the foot can result in changes up the kinetic chain, which in this case can extend upward in the wearer's body."
The researchers, in the AU College of Education's Department of Kinesiology, recruited 39 college-age men and women for the study. Participants, wearing thong-style flip-flops and then traditional athletic shoes, walked a platform that measured vertical force as the walkers' feet hit the ground. In addition, a video camcorder measured stride length and limb angles.
Shroyer's team, under the direction of Dr. Wendi Weimar, associate professor of biomechanics and director of the department's Biomechanics Laboratory, found that flip-flop wearers took shorter steps and that their heels hit the ground with less vertical force than when the same walkers wore athletic shoes. When wearing flip-flops, the study participants did not bring their toes up as much during the leg's swing phase, resulting in a larger ankle angle and shorter stride length, possibly because they tended to grip the flip-flops with their toes.
Shroyer, who owns two pairs of flip-flops himself, said the research does not suggest that people should never wear flip-flops. They can be worn to provide short-term benefits such as helping beach-goers avoid sandy shoes or giving athletes post-game relief from their athletic shoes, but are not designed to properly support the foot and ankle during all-day wear, and, like athletics shoes, should be replaced every three to four months.

More News on Metro Atlanta's Striped "Tiger" Evidence

Diane Smith at Noah's Ark has told the AAC that the Auburn University veterinarian and students should be coming to visit Evidence by month's end to remove his catheter.
Meantime, the young zebra has settled into his new home - and has
shattered all zebra stereotypes. Zebras as a whole are known as
the "bad boys" of the equine family with a tough, no nonsense, "pounce
first, ask questions later" temperment. Evidence, while biting and
kicking just enough to keep up his reputation, has made friends with
two of the family cats! Their rubbing on his legs, as cats do, has made
it easier for his caregivers to get him used to having his feet and
legs handled.
Evidence has not yet moved to his new public habitat, but it's in the
works. The habitat is under construction, and once his catheter is
removed this month, plans are to bring him out for his "public debut"
sometime in July. He'll hang out with his public during open hours,
then return to his very own "zebra barn," donated by a generous donor,
for the night.
Noah's Ark has invited the Atlanta Auburn Club and AAC members to come tour the habitat. They are open Tuesday-Saturday from Noon-3:00 p.m.
Noah's Ark, in Locust Grove, is 250-acre home to
more than 1,000 special animals which were unwanted, abused or
neglected --- including lions, TIGERS and bears. It is also an
admission-free attraction for the public.
Anyone interested reading more about Noah's Ark can click here or call 770-957-0888.

Did You Know? There are nearly 100 local Auburn Clubs throughout the country, and through these groups alums have the opportunity to participate in various fund-raising activities either directly for their local club scholarship or towards the Association's Endowed Scholarship. In 2005-2006, more than $178,000 was raised by local clubs for students in their areas to attend Auburn.
Circle of Excellence A new 'giving' society for life members, the Circle of Excellence opens the door to contribute directly to the Alumni Association Endowment fund, which provides several full-tuition scholarships to first-year Auburn students. With a $1,000 starting contribution level (pledged over 3 years), the 3-tier society allows these Alums to know that they've contributed to Auburn's efforts to bring deserving students to The Plains.
How can I give? Just make your tax-deductible contribution to the 'Auburn University Foundation', designating your local club scholarship or the Alumni Association Endowment in the "Notes" line of your check. Or if you prefer give online and choose "Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship" as your gift designation or specify your local club scholarship in the 'note other gift area here' space..

Sewell Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. holds 501(c)(3) non-profit status from the IRS. The AAC raises thousands of dollars annually to fund scholarships for metro Atlanta area students to attend Auburn University. In 2007, we were able to raise more than $27,000 to fund our regular and newly established endowed scholarships. The Greater Atlanta metro area is home to 20,000 Auburn alumni, fans & friends....and still growing. War Eagle!
