War Eagle from the Atlanta Auburn Club!

Greetings!

Apologies for the re-send but something strange happened to the formatting when that email went out and it was linked to one of the golf photos. We figured a correction was necessary so that everyone could actually read it! Hope this one is better....War Eagle!!

Another jam-packed issue of the Atlanta Auburn Club newsletter today. Perfect for some weekend reading! We hope that we'll see some of you (and your four-legged friends) at our Orange Bandana Day get-together, which is tomorrow at Piedmont Dog Park. There is also still time to get tickets for our Georgia Force group outing next week!
More details below.

We've also got an update on Atlanta's, and now Auburn's, favorite "commuter" -- Evidence! The AAC contacted Noah's Ark to ask how he was doing. If you ever hear of other Auburn-related stories in the community, state or elsewhere that you think other Tigers would be interested in, let us know!

And don't forget: two big club scholarship fundraising events are fast-approaching - our annual golf tournament on June 9 and our kick-off event on July 15. Save the dates and see more details below.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Noah's Ark Provides the AAC an Update on Evidence
image
Well, he is probably one of the quickest rising stars in the Auburn Family --- Evidence, the baby zebra found injured along I-75 near Locust Grove.

Evidence, who is believed to be only about two or three months old, was found on April 8 grazing near exit 201, suffering from a severe pelvic injury. The group that rescued him, Noah's Ark, believes he was being transported when he fell from a truck or trailer.

His name? Police get credit for that --- he was "evidence" after all!

Auburn's veterinary school was first to respond to a call for help to save the young injured zebra.

The Atlanta Auburn Club contacted Noah's Ark to find out how our adopted striped "Tiger" was doing.

Diane Smith, of Noah's Ark, told the AAC on Monday that the
shunt was removed from his neck and he was starting on oral antibiotics.

"We have met the cost of his professional care at Auburn thus far. We don't know yet what his prolonged care will entail, and as a nursing baby, his milk is $75 per 25 lb bucket, so we are accepting donations for his continued care as well," she told the Atlanta club.

Noah's Ark, in Locust Grove, is 250-acre home to more than 1,000 special animals which were unwanted, abused or neglected --- including lions, TIGERS and bears. It is also an admission-free attraction for the public.

If you would like to contribute to Evidence's care or read more about the work done at Noah's Ark, click here or call 770-957-0888.
Auburn Club Special Tag License Plates in Georgia & The Road Ahead

The Atlanta Auburn Club wants to thank every Tiger in the state of Georgia who took the time to sign our petition and write their state senators, representatives and Governor Perdue to oppose HB 1165. It was an overwhelming response and a civics lesson that we were proud to lead. For years, much of the work on the Auburn Club tag was handled by a relatively small group of people --- members of our club board and legal counsel. So it was exciting to see how many people jumped to the cause statewide when the help of the masses was needed most.

imageThe bill, HB 1165, which threatened the existence of the Auburn Club Special Tag license plate in Georgia, died in the Senate Public Safety Committee. It had been approved by the full House. But the Senate committee never held a public hearing on the bill --- we believe this was due, in part, to the campaign of opposition that spoke out against this legislation. We have heard the response took some lawmakers by surprise.

Obviously, we weren't the only alumni group fighting HB 1165. But the Auburn Family did offer one distinct advantage --- Auburn Tigers are statewide, not only in Atlanta. The coordination with other Auburn clubs in Georgia was fantastic!

Although HB 1165 died in 2008 --- we are not out of the woods by a long shot! We FULLY expect this legislation to rise from the dead as other alumni clubs seek to win approval of their tags. Tennessee and Florida State are among the other alumni groups which are actively seeking a tag in Georgia. Alabama wants one too.

Last November, when the Clemson tags first hit the streets, the AAC received several emails asking why that tag had the name of the university at the bottom, whereas our tag lists the county of residence. The Florida Gator tag also has the university. We asked the special tag office about this and were told that some rules had changed. But sources told our team that this "university" designation at the bottom of those tags was also a point of contention with some legislators.

We can update our tag design. But in light of the recent legislative effort to kill these special tags, we choose to keep our tag "as is" right now. Here's why:

HB 1165 was aimed at establishing "reciprocity" with other states. We saw and received emails from some Georgia lawmakers who contended that only the Gators and Auburn were affected by HB 1165 -- they hinted that Clemson wasn't affected because South Carolina had reciprocity.

The AAC can tell you that the Alabama legislature is considering a reciprocity bill. But "considering" doesn't mean it has passed. So the issue still requires vigilence.

Here is how our legal counsel explains it:

"My reading of the current Alabama law is that it is essentially the same as Georgia's current law.  Once a reciprocal law is in place we will be insulated from the attacks on our license plates in the Georgia legislature, such as what occurred this year.

"Until then, our best defenses in the legislature remain: 1) that we got our tags as a specialty, Georgia -based group with no help from the university or the Alumni Association, and 2) that our tags are clearly not out-of-state university tags based on the application process that was conducted and the fact there is no "Auburn University" anywhere on the Auburn Club tag.  These two issues may well assist us in being grandfathered in if this statute is reintroduced next year."

The Atlanta Auburn Club welcomes your comments on this issue. Our main goal is to make sure that we can keep our tag -- there are more than 10,000 of them on the road now and more are added every day. So please know that if there are any further updates on this issue, we will let you know.

Auburn University President Jay Gogue Formally Installed

image Auburn University President Jay Gogue was formally installed as the school's 18th president yesterday. The ceremony on Cater Hall lawn was streamed live on the Web.

"President Gogue indicated he would 'hit the ground listening' when he arrived, and he has done that and more," said Paul Spina, President Pro Tem for the Auburn University Board of Trustees. "He has literally been all over the state and beyond, reaching out to the Auburn family far and wide. We look forward to his continued leadership and aggressive plans for our future."

Gogue began his tenure as president in July and has spent his first ten months meeting with AU colleges and departments as well as on the road meeting with AU alumni clubs and Alabama Cooperative Extension System county offices. His first priority has been seeking input into and developing a 10-year strategic plan for the university. Gogue has encouraged input from alumni, students, staff, faculty, trustees and city and state residents in developing a plan first draft that was presented to the Board of Trustees in February. A final draft is expected in June.

"We look to expand Auburn's academic strength and quality while upholding the traditions and spirit that have made Auburn a place people always think of as home.  Everywhere I've been, I find people feel a powerful connection to Auburn, and hold it as very special," Gogue said. "This first year back has been a wonderful homecoming for Susie and me, and we find that although much has changed, especially in terms of growth, the university still has that same strong sense of pride, place and warmth."

Gogue, a native of Waycross, Georgia, is a 1969 AU alumnus. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in horticulture from AU and a doctorate in horticulture from Michigan State University in 1973. Gogue and his wife, Susie, met in the eighth grade as classmates in Waycross and were married during their undergraduate years at Auburn. Susie also earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from AU. They are the parents of three children and have one grandchild.

Gogue came to Auburn from the University of Houston System, where he had served as chancellor and president since 2003. He was president of New Mexico State University from 2000 to 2003. Utah State University selected Gogue as provost in 1995.

He began his career in higher education administration in 1986 as associate director of the Office of University Research at Clemson University, where he also served as vice president for research and vice president/vice provost for agriculture and natural resources.

He worked for the National Park Service from 1973 to 1986, starting as a field research scientist and rising to the position of chief administrative scientist for several regions of the U.S. Park System.
