War Eagle from the Atlanta Auburn Club!

Greetings!

Lots of news to share with everyone today, including details about the Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship established at Auburn. More details on this below.

We also have several events on the calendar that we want to bring to everyone's attention. One of the them is July 15 - a Tuesday - so put a big orange & blue circle around that one. This will be the date of our annual scholarship evening with Coach Tuberville. More details will be announced in the coming weeks -- please make sure you save the date!

For all our Auburn golfers and golf fans: the Atlanta Auburn Club didn't get a strong enough commitment to continue moving forward with the AT&T Classic this year. So this event is now officially cancelled for us and checks have been mailed back to everyone who sent them in. AT&T had actually contacted us about this event late. We hope to have the opportunity to give it a try in the future, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, we've gotten a great response so far for our Roy B. Sewell Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament! Thanks to everyone who has registered early!

We've also got an outing next week to see the Thrashers... and another to watch the Georgia Force! Plus, Coach Tuberville speaks at an FCA event here in Atlanta, the Auburn canine crowd is heading to Piedmont Dog Park in late April ---- and, oh yeah, A-Day is on Saturday!!! How many people are going -- can we see a show of hands! (or maybe a parade of Auburn Club Special Tag License Plates headed toward Jordan-Hare Stadium?!)

HB 1165 is still out there giving lots of college fans nightmares -- but the Senate Public Safety Committee still has not scheduled a hearing on the matter. Meantime, the Georgia Assembly's remaining legislative days are getting less and less. Please help us keep up the pressure!!
Our petition is nearing 1,300 online signatures.

Auburn University Establishes Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship

imageAuburn University has established an endowed scholarship in honor of Lauren Burk, the AU student who died tragically on March 4.

A graduate of Walton High School in Marietta, Burk was a freshman studying graphic design and art. She was also an active and admired member of the Delta Gamma sorority.

The scholarship will be awarded to incoming freshman students majoring in graphic design with preference given to students from Cobb County.

"As the Auburn community grieves the loss of one of its own, we are touched by the thoughtfulness of others," said Auburn University President Jay Gogue, in response to the generosity of donations in Burk's memory. "Gifts to the Lauren Ashley Burk Memorial Scholarship Endowment will be a permanent memory of Lauren's tremendous spirit."

Donations can be made online at www.develop.auburn.edu (specify Lauren Burk Scholarship Fund) or send a check payable to the Auburn University Foundation to: Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Fund, 317 South College Street, Auburn, AL 36849

Auburn Alumni visit Atlanta Motor Speedway during taping of NASCAR Angels.  From left to right:  Kimberly Hyde '98 (NASCAR), Nicole Shropshire '06 (Development Coordinator, Rally Foundation), Marc Mitchell '06 (Driver, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series), Dean Crowe '83 (Founder and CEO, Rally Foundation), and Lauren Neylan '04 (Leader Enterprises).

Alpharetta resident Nicole Shropshire '06 travels the state educating folks about pediatric cancer and was recently visited by some angels.  In March, Shropshire had her aging 1997 Toyota Avalon restored by NASCAR Angels, NASCAR's charitable reality television program in which automotive and racing experts repair and improve vehicles for deserving individuals.  Shropshire works for the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research, a Georgia-based, national non-profit organization.  Shropshire drives all over the Georgia visiting schools and businesses to teach people about the No. 1 killer of children, and raising money to find better treatments for kids with cancer and ultimately a cure. It was quite a surprise when those involved with the filming of NASCAR Angels realized they were all Auburn Alums!

NASCAR Angels is in its second year of production and is hosted by Rusty Wallace and Shannon Wiseman. The show is broadcast on 200 stations nationwide on weekends. The episode with Shropshire will air nationwide in May (www.nascar.com/auto/angels). Rally Foundation is in its second year, too, and has given away more than a half million dollars to support childhood cancer research at 20 hospitals and research centers across the country (www.rallyfoundation.org).

Auburn...In The News

imageNew AU scholarship honors Pulitzer Prize winner

AUBURN - Auburn University recently received a $100,000 endowed gift from the James M. Cox Foundation in honor of Cynthia Tucker, a 1976 graduate of Auburn, Tucker was recognized with a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2007. She is currently the editorial page editor at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The endowment will provide scholarships for students in the journalism program in AU's College of Liberal Arts. Known as the Cynthia Tucker '76 Endowed Scholarship for Journalism Excellence, the gift strives to increase the level of diversity in the journalism program.

"It is such an honor to receive this endowment from the Cox Foundation," said Anna Gramberg, dean of the College of Liberal Arts. "So many of our journalism students admire Cynthia Tucker, and giving them the opportunity to emulate Cynthia's prestigious career is the best gift I can think of."

Tucker joined Cox Enterprises more than 30 years ago and the endowment recognizes her contributions not only to the company, but to the entire field of journalism.

"At Cox, we value talent, diversity and acting as a good corporate citizen," said Leigh Ann Launius, director of foundations and operations at Cox Enterprises. "Creating this scholarship in Cynthia's name is the perfect way to pay tribute to all three values."

Tucker was born in 1955 in Monroeville, Alabama. At Auburn, she earned a dual degree in journalism and English while writing for The Plainsman.

Tucker was selected as Nieman Fellow by Harvard University in 1988. In 1993, the National Women's Political Caucus awarded Tucker the Exceptional Merit Award. In 2005, Tucker received the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award, as well as an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Colby College. She was a finalist in 2004 and 2005 for a Pulitzer Prize.
