| War Eagle from the Atlanta Auburn Club! |
|
|
Greetings!
Not sure if you noticed, but tomorrow it's already February! The Atlanta Auburn Club is still celebrating the Tigers' win over Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl -- where did this month go?
It is the start of another club year and we're already working on plans for fundraising events and other activities for 2008. This is also the time of year when we seek input from you about club events and any other Auburn-related issues. So feel free to email us. We would particularly like to get some feedback about a fundraising opportunity with the AT&T Classic (see below).
Club leaders will be attending the annual Club Leadership Conference in Auburn on February 8-9. This is the yearly event where clubs are recognized for their efforts and we get to brainstorm with other Auburn clubs from around the country. We'll have a progress report for you when we return.
In the coming weeks, we will have details about upcoming Young Alum events and a new initiative we are starting in Atlanta for some local MAIN events.
If you are a YouTube fan, there is now a new place to upload all your Auburn videos. Details on this below. And we've noticed an ever-growing community of Auburn alumni participating in LinkedIn -- there is even a designated Auburn group there! Be sure to check it out...
To get 2008 started off right, we also need some help from you. Please click on the "Update Profile/Email Address" link that is at the bottom (left side) of this email. By doing that you can make sure that you are subscribed for the email alerts that interest you most -- Golfers, Young Alums and MAIN grads: this is of specific importance for you! We will be sending out emails this year that are specifically targeted to these groups only, so make sure you aren't left out! In addition to selecting email preferences, you can also update your email address and other contact information. If anyone has any trouble accessing this, please let us know.
And, if you are interested in getting involved with the AAC this year by volunteering for events, fundraising efforts, Young Alums, MAIN, the golf tournament, community service projects, etc. --- please send us an email! The Atlanta Auburn Club's treasured volunteers are our most valuable resource -- and we would be most honored to include you in our dynamic and ever-growing group of Tigers! It's a great way to network, make friends and share some real War Eagle Moments!

| AT&T Classic Golf Tournament & Atlanta Auburn Club
AAC Seeks Urgent Feedback!
The Atlanta Auburn Club has been offered an exciting fundraising opportunity and we would like to get some feedback from all Tiger golfers and Tiger businesses who receive this email.
This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the AT&T Classic Golf Tournament in Atlanta, which will take place May 15-18. The tournament has contacted the AAC and offered the club an opportunity to get a special Skybox at the 17th green at TPC Sugarloaf. The Skybox would enable Auburn Tigers, their friends, business clients, business prospects, or your business employees/recruits to gather while watching some of the world's best golfers.
As planned, for $125 per person, per day, you would be entitled to the following:
--Special ticket access to the AAC Skybox at the 17th green
--Ticket access to the tournament grounds at TPC Sugarloaf
--All inclusive high quality food buffet
--Open bar featuring beer and wine beverage selection
--1 parking pass
The
AT&T Classic foundation has given us a limited time in which to
determine our ability to fund this venture. Funding would take place
through your purchase of tickets--either as an individual or for
business purposes. All ticket purchases are 100% deductible as a
charitable gift.
Will you please respond with your feedback as soon as you receive this notification?

Auburn Joins the YouTube Nation
Auburn has announced the launch of a dedicated Channel on the ever popular video-sharing Web site YouTube. You can find it at www.youtube.com/AuburnUniversity.
The Channel currently features more than 60 videos -- among the most viewed clips are videos of AU's beloved mascot Aubie and a promotional video featuring AU alumni reciting the Auburn Creed.
AU's Office of Communications and Marketing will manage the content on the university's YouTube Channel. Anyone can subscribe to the site, which will notify you when new videos are posted. Auburn Tiger viewers also have the opportunity to post comments about videos.
AU's partnership with YouTube marks the university's latest new media initiative. Last semester Auburn announced the launch of AU iTunes, a partnership with Apple to provide a dedicated space on iTunes where faculty and campus groups can post information including presentations and lectures available for download. Last fall the university also launched an RSS feed and Wire Eagle, a subscription-based weekly e-newsletter. |

MIT Club of Atlanta Invites AAC to Speaking Engagement on February 9
The Atlanta Auburn Club received an email yesterday from the MIT Club of Atlanta, inviting all Auburn Tigers to a special speaking engagement next week at Oglethorpe University. Dr. Adam Berinsky, MIT Associate Professor of Political Science, will speak Thursday, February 7 on the U.S. polling process. The event will start with heavy hors d'oeuvres at 6:30pm, followed by Dr. Berinsky's lecture and open discussion.
Dr. Berinsky is the author of Silent Voices: Public
Opinion and Political Representation in America, in which he argues
that the very process of collecting information on public preferences
through surveys may actually bias voters' picture of those preferences. He
is currently completing a book on public opinion during wartime, with a
focus on World War II.
This event will be held in the Grunwald Room - Emerson Hall (Bldg 12) on the campus of Oglethorpe University, in Brookhaven just north of Buckhead. You can register now by clicking here

Former AU President Philpott Remembered
Dr. Harry Philpott who served as Auburn University's 11th president, from 1965-1980, died Sunday. He was 90 years old.
During his tenure, Dr. Philpott led AU through what was up
to that time the university's greatest period of growth. He is credited
with broadening AU into a truly comprehensive university, in addition to
an agricultural and mechanical college.
"Dr. Philpott was an inspirational leader and a champion for Auburn's faculty. His focus on academics is still felt today and represents a substantial part of his legacy," said AU President Jay Gogue.
During Dr. Philpott's presidency, Auburn grew from offering 63 fields of study to offering degrees in more than 140 areas. The schools of business and nursing were formed, the school of arts and sciences was reorganized and several new departments were created. Another achievement during the Philpott years was the university's record in awarding degrees. During his presidency, Philpott awarded more than one-half the total number of degrees given by the university in its then 123-year history. Through March 1980, he had awarded 53,806 degrees, or 55 percent of the total 98,316 degrees awarded at AU throughout history to that point.
Dr. Philpott's tenure also saw AU's ROTC program become optional instead of mandatory, and the university's role regarding "in loco parentis" was lessened as the administration dropped curfews for students and allowed female students to live off campus for the first time. Auburn also experienced a large increase in the enrollment of female students; female enrollment was 28 percent in 1965 compared to 42 percent in 1980 and 49 percent today.
Born May 6, 1917, Philpott received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University in 1938 and subsequently began an administrative career there as director of religious activities. He was a Baptist minister and served as a chaplain in the United States Navy during World War II, seeing action with the Third and Fifth Fleets in the Pacific Theater. In 1947, Philpott earned a Ph.D. from Yale University in religion and higher education.
He taught religion at the Univ. of Florida (1947-1952); served as dean of religious life and head of the religion and philosophy department at Stephens College (1952-1957); and returned to the Univ. of Florida as vice president (1957-1965) before coming to Auburn. He received an honorary degree from AU in 1981.
Philpott received an honorary Doctor of Science of Humanities from AU in 1981 and continued to live in Auburn after his retirement.Former Auburn University President, Dr. Harry M. Philpott, who was 90 years old and an annual member of the Auburn Alumni Association, died January 27th at the Bethany House hospice facility in Auburn.
