War Eagle from the Atlanta Auburn Club! Newsletter Subtitle
Month Year
 Greetings!

Where has September gone? Time never flew this fast when we were students cramming for midterms at Auburn! The Atlanta Auburn Club has a lot of great things planned for this Fall -- so check out the details below, circle the dates in your calendar, and let us know if you have any questions or additional suggestions for events.

Do you know any Tigers who still aren't getting the club Emails? Then send them a copy of this one! The best way to do it is to click on the "Forward to More Tigers" button at the bottom left of this email blast. Our Newsletter signup button is also working again and back up on the web.

The AAC has some eagerly anticipated news to report to all of you about our fundraising efforts so far this year. We'll save that for next week, since this edition of our newsletter is already full.

We wish everyone a great weekend -- and if you are headed to The Plains, have a safe trip and a safe return home.

Get out your calendar and start saving some dates! The Atlanta Auburn Club hasn't stopped all year and we've got even more fun planned for Fall. So, grab your friends and bring your family -- we want to see plenty of Tigers and LOTS of Orange & Blue

--On Saturday, September 29th we'll be at The Bucket Shop to cheer on the Tigers as they face the Florida Gators in The Swamp.

--The AAC is headed to the ALUM Hospitality Tent in full force on Saturday, October 6th, when Auburn takes on Vanderbilt. We encourage all Tigers living in Georgia to come on out and join us! Remember the ALUM tent opens three hours before Kickoff.

--Back by popular demand, the AAC will hold its 2nd "Orange Bandana Day" at Piedmont Dog Park on Sunday, October 14th -- 2 pm. See the additional Dog Park item in this newsletter for more details.

--On Saturday, November 10th, the AAC will be boarding two buses bound for Athens for a date "Between the Hedges." The Athens Bus Trip is a popular one and we always have some out-of-state Tigers joining us for the ride, so get your reservations now! Tickets for the bus are only $30 per person. Buses will leave the Park & Ride at I-85 and Indian Trail (just north of Jimmy Carter Blvd.) about five hours before Kickoff. Why drive and worry about parking in Athens when you can get the tailgate party started sooner with us! For more information about the bus trip, or to reserve your seat, contact the club at: communications@atlantaauburnclub.org

Keep an eye on future e-mail blasts, because we're planning a possible Thrashers outing in December and some other surprises!!  War Eagle!

The Atlanta Auburn Club has received some email this week, and we're pretty sure that we're not the only ones. There are plenty of email chains making the rounds following the game last Saturday. The Dean of Students sent out a message to AU students, Phillip Marshall had some points to make in the Huntsville Times...and that's just the start of it. We decided to include some today. Take a look:
*****************************
Remember who you are, Auburn . . . .  ALWAYS.

Auburn people have always prided themselves on being different than that  other school in the state. Auburn people carry themselves with dignity and class. In recent years, most of us shook our heads in disbelief as Alabama fans booed their players off the field after tough losses. We said Auburn people would never do something like that.

Legendary Auburn coach Shug Jordan was known as the "gentleman coach." He demanded that his players play with class, dignity and respect. When asked once about a team's fans booing its players, Jordan replied that Auburn people would never do that.

What would Shug think now?

"War Eagle" cheers needed most

Dear Students,

Football season is one of my favorite times of the year. Each week, I can't wait for Saturday to watch my Auburn Tigers play their best against the rival team. And each week, I am thankful that Auburn students share in my enthusiasm and come out to cheer on the Orange and Blue. However, I was disheartened this past Saturday to hear boos coming from our student section - not aimed at the other team but aimed instead at our own players.

As a former Auburn football player, I can tell you first-hand that no one wants to win more than the young men that prepare and give their all on the field each Saturday. A loss is devastating but lessons are learned and you move on. Booing your own team - your own classmates and fellow Auburn students - does nothing toward motivating them to a win. In fact, it is times like these when they need to hear your "War Eagle" cries and cheers of support the most.

As the season progresses, please be mindful of the importance of good sportsmanship. Nobody is perfect and a true fan supports his team not just during the good times but also during the adverse times. I hope to see all you true fans there this Saturday as the Tigers take on New Mexico State at 6 p.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Johnny Green, Dean of Students

Will the real Auburn fans please stand up?

A special message to my fellow Auburn fans:

Could I have your attention please?  Thank you.  Now, will the real Auburn fans please stand up? Good. There are a lot of you, but you haven't made your presence felt lately.

The folks who claim they are Auburn fans aren't the same Auburn family I used to know.  The Auburn fans of old were patient and loyal to the core.

They loved their school and they wore Orange and Blue no matter what happened on the field.  Sure, they loved it when their team won, but they also knew it wasn't possible to win them all.

They live and die with their team.  If the Tigers were playing well, or if they weren't, the fans were always there, cheering. You never heard those folks boo the players, because they loved them win or lose. I've even talked to old timers who told me about cheering for first downs because touchdowns were so rare.

Once, when some fans became impatient and booed the team, they were scolded by the coach who reminded them that "Auburn fans don't do that".  So much for the boos.

There was a time when although Auburn fans hated losing they didn't threaten to fire the coach if things didn't go well.  Auburn folks hung in there during the good times and the bad.  The radio talk shows and internet chat rooms weren't around in those days, but I think if they had been available, Auburn folks wouldn't have used them as a forum to blast their team and coaches.

Dirty laundry wasn't hung out for the world to see.  If the family had a quarrel, they weren't so eager to let the neighbors here about it.  Those people were a lot more tolerant.  They understood that young men, not robots, play football.  They're not perfect and they make mistakes.  These guys are playing a game they love at a school they love.  They work very hard to prepare and give it their best shot.  But so do the guys on the other team and sometimes that other team wins.  The Auburn players and coaches don't like it any more than we fans, but losing was not always a hanging offense.

Now I don't claim to be a fortuneteller.  I have no idea how many more games this football team will win or lose.  But no matter what happens for the remainder of the season, let us remember that screaming for a coach's scalp or booing the quarterback doesn't help the situation.  It only makes things worse.

When the football season is over, Auburn will still be Auburn.  The school we love and support has always been special in the hearts and souls of her people.  I'm just thankful to be a member of her family.  I refuse to let the emotions of some change the way I feel about her.

See you here next week,
Kindest regards and War Eagle,

It's a Doggone Good Time!! The AAC's "Orange Bandana Day" is Back!
Join the ACC at Piedmont Dog Park on Sunday, October 14th at 2 pm; Park Tavern afterwards!

imageimage

Whoever said "cats" and dogs can't have a great time has never been around a lot of Tigers! In the midst of a Summer heatwave in June, we had a diehard canine crowd of some 30 Auburn dogs turn out for the Atlanta Auburn Club's first-ever "Orange Bandana Day."

This event was so popular, we're doing it again! Scout, Blue, Bo and the other four-legged members of the Auburn pack picked the date: Sunday, October 14th (the day after the Arkansas game). We'll be meeting at Piedmont Dog Park again -- at 2 p.m. -- and then joining other Auburn Tigers over at the Park Tavern afterward.

Make plans now to join us for a tail-wagging good time! Can't find an orange bandana? No worries! The AAC has a limited quantity available for $3.00 each. Don't have a dog? Borrow one.. or better yet, ADOPT! There are plenty of dogs that want to be Auburn Tigers! War Eagle!!

With this copy of the Atlanta Auburn Club E-Newsletter, we want to start a new effort that we're calling -- I AM Auburn. We all have a story to tell, so jot yours down and send it to us. To get things started, we've asked some club volunteers to make the first contributions:

I AM Auburnimage

I bleed Orange and Blue -- always have, always will. I work a full time job and then volunteer the equivalent of second full time job to the Atlanta Auburn Club -- because I love it! I've had countless War Eagle moments, including when I was living in Munich, Germany and happened upon some War Eagle Travelers who needed directions to the Hofbrauhaus! (Of course I joined them!) I get teary eyed at the sight of the Eagle's flight, feel at home every time I hear the bells at Samford Hall, and lose my voice cheering the Tigers even when watching a game on TV. I take great pride in telling my friends that Auburn is one big family with a giant heart. It's MY family--one that's spread around the world, yet still understands the charm and significance of a small spot called Toomer's Corner. Best part? We never need a reason for a reunion!
I AM Auburn! AAC President Kathleen Saal
----
Since my enrollment at Auburn in '77, few Auburn moments can compare to that of enrolling my first born at Auburn in the fall of 2006! For my son to be home in Atlanta and fully appreciate a "War Eagle" response to his Auburn hat....that is priceless and worth every dime of out-of-state tuition! I AM Auburn!....and now my son is too! Jan Floyd-Ros, Former Miss Auburn & AAC Board Member
----
Are you Auburn? Tell us your story and we'll run it in our newsletter! Email it to the Atlanta Auburn Club and post it to the new "I AM Auburn" Forum that we'll be putting on our message board.
