 Greetings!

Welcome!

FeedbackHappy New Year to the entire CariFin Universe. Very soon we will be launching CariFin 2012, which will be the 21st Edition of the Games. This is an opportunity for the Financial Services Sector to come together and live the CariFin mantra of fun, fitness and friendship.

In this issue of the newsletter we share the proposed CariFin Calendar of Events with you.
We explore Crossfit and whether this can be incorporated into the CariFin agenda. We also cover 20 things every Team Manager should be aware of and a look of one of the successful Team Managers.

We would love to hear your feedback on the topics covered as well as other ideas on how we can improve the CariFin experience and increase participation in CariFin Games 2012.

Schedule of Events

CariFin Games schedule of events is much-anticipated on the sporting calendar of the financial services sector.   Officially we start three months into the year allowing the individual members of staff of the participating institutions to prepare for the various activities in the Games. The institutions can take this opportunity to run various training programmes to promote participation in the event as well as increase the level of fitness among their staff in both walking and running categories.  The proposed start date for the Torch Relay and CariFin Games is Saturday April 14, 2012 this will allow 10 days to recover before the first event - The One Lap Savannah. From here on virtually every week there is an event.

The key in giving the three months' space before the start of activities is for all to prepare and promote the Games. They also  derive the benefits of higher levels of fitness and greater staff satisfaction and team spirit.

Jeneen Salim - GHL Team Leader

Down came the smiling Jeneen with that ray of confidence to greet me and escort me to what turned out to be really fun, exciting and insightful.   She was  full of understanding of how she wove her magic wand in making a team that started CariFin  a day into the activities into a fully confident, enthusiastic, competitive outfit.
For one getting members out to events is important, but also your best talent has to be onboard to ensure your best performances on the given days and especially when it counts on the big day.
Good leadership in CariFin is not just being able to bring out your troops to the Torch Relay and Urban Challenge. It's in getting them prepared and motivated for other events like cricket, football and All Fours. Also, getting them past Grand Bazaar down to Sevilla Golf Course in Couva for CariFin's cross country and family fun day.
It's not just about getting them involved but also ingrained with CariFin's three watch words - Fun, Fitness and Friendship in a manner that can demonstrate authenticity and spirit from the theme.
So it was no surprise in 2011, when we added Xplosion to the Fun, Fitness and Friendship theme, GHL team membership took to it as a moth to a flame.  They literally transformed the opening ceremony to an outstanding spectacle that had everyone's jaw dropping.  They gave a riveting performance portraying their interpretation of the Xplosion of Fun, Fitness and Friendship.

20 Things Every Team Leader should Know
                                 For a Successful CariFin Experience
  1. Starting with the dates of CariFin Games events is a good way to get the internal promotion kicking off: via the institution's intranet, flyer etc. This will sensitize staff about the event and help determine the level of interest.
  2. Identify members of your staff or bring in personnel from the outside who could organize and train interested staff members in getting fit.
  3. Identify two members of staff to attend CariFin Planning meetings to relay information to in-house organizing committee.
  4. With the annual Torch Relay coming up identify senior management personnel as well as a representative of runners and walkers to carry the flame for part of the Torch journey from Central Bank in the north to Republic Bank, Couva in Central. Each leg ranges from 2 1/2 to 3 miles.
  5. Identify and select a female member of staff who you could train in aerobics and get familiar with the questions asked previously or you may need to have a screening session to choose your best representative
  6. Select or identify captains for Cricket, Football, All Fours and an overall team leader for the Games.
  7. Be familiar with the dates for all events in the Games and prepare and provide representation

The Reasons why CrossFit a good fit?
Kettle Bell
A surefire way to develop core strength

The question could be asked what benefits are there to be had for the participants of CariFin if CrossFit should come onboard?   Could it give that proverbial shot in the arm to somehow lift the excitement, interest and growth in the 21st Edition of the Games?

CrossFit is an intense exercise programme featuring dynamic exercises like plyometric jumps, gymnastic exercises and Olympic lifts. The programme is structured in such a way that participants are challenged to do a certain number of repetitions in a workout in a specific timeframe; with one of the objectives being to see how fast they can complete a workout.
CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning programme practiced with Functional movement. It attempts to optimize physical competence in sundry recognized fitness domains:  Cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, Stamina, Flexibility, Power, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy.
What need in CariFin could CrossFit meet? CariFin has always been about the promotion of health and fitness.  Since CariFin's inception we the participants as well as the organizing committee wanted a way to measure  "fitness" outside the scope of running.  The Aerobics burnout or competition was trendy and popular at the time and a great crowd puller. But, it never met the need of exactly being able to measure fitness.  Many participants over the years have asked for a simpler format or competition that would involve pure exercises, unlike the fancy dance steps of aerobics, that would determine the fittest person in the financial services sector.
