TerraLogos Green News
Vol. 4, Issue 1
January 2010
Baltimore housetops
Greetings!

2009 was a very busy year for us. We "graduated" from the Emerging Technology Center, the BDC-funded business incubator that gave us our start and moved into our new storefront office.

We added new staff, expanded our services to include commercial as well as residential buildings, were involved nationally and locally in the development of the trade organization for home performance contractors (Efficiency First), and introduced a new BGE incentive program to provide rebates for home energy improvements.

And in December, we passed some big milestones. We have performed over 800 energy audits, and, through our efforts, our customers have now saved a combined total of over 2 million dollars in utility bills.

But we only wrote one newsletter, which was sent in March '09. We hope you missed us a little, and we promise to be more regular in 2010 with at least quarterly issues.

New developments are happening rapidly in the energy efficiency improvement field, and we will work hard to keep you updated on incentive programs, the latest energy products and tips, local green events and discounts for energy improvement services.

In 2010, look to TerraLogos Energy Group to be
your partner in energy efficiency. Happy New Year!

Changes
New Everything with the Same Great Service
TerraLogos for Holidays
We've moved - to a first floor storefront in Bolton Hill (decked out for the holidays in the photo).

And not just our offices have moved, but also our web site. So, we have new addresses for street, domain and email.

And while we were at it, we also changed our name (slightly) to TerraLogos Energy Group.

We have been out-growing our "Green Home Services" name for over a year, as customers have asked us to help them improve the energy efficiency of other buildings besides homes. We have performed energy audits on schools, churches, offices and multi-family apartment buildings.

The very same issues that affect energy use and comfort in homes also affect other Maryland buildings. Therefore, we can use the same methods for analyzing, diagnosing and solving their energy efficiency problems. It is simply a matter of scale and complexity.

With our green, whole-building approach, all our customers get a customized and prioritized plan for making the wisest choices to
  • save energy costs,
  • improve comfort and health, and
  • reduce environmental impact.
Whether you have a home or office, the audit is just the first step. So, we partner with you to complete your energy improvements through our Sustainable Contractors Network. Our qualified contractors know how to properly and cost-effectively complete the recommend improvement projects. Plus we will help you identify and apply for all appropriate incentives and rebates (see BGE article below.)

Trust TerraLogos as your partner for
improving the energy efficiency of all types of buildings.

Get Paid for Saving Money, Part 1
BGE's Home Performance Incentives
Home Energy Audits by themselves do not reduce energy bills. It's performing the recommended energy improvements that will save you money, while improving comfort and indoor air quality.

Now, BGE will pay their customers to invest in the wisest, cost-effective home energy improvements. The new BGE Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Incentive Program provides rebates to homeowners who perform some of the most common energy improvements recommended by our energy audits.

HPwES Contractor of the YearYou can earn a rebate for 15% of the costs up to $1,200 for qualifying energy improvements, such as air sealing and insulation. Plus, there are additional rebates for high-efficiency HVAC upgrades.

To take advantage of these incentives, you must have your home audited by a qualified Home Performance with Energy Star Contractor, like TerraLogos Energy Group. In fact, we were awarded Contractor of the Year by the Maryland HPwES program in 2008.

After the audit, we will partner with you to design the most sensible improvement program for your home to cost-effectively save energy and take advantage of all appropriate incentives and rebates, including both the BGE and Federal programs.

To participate in the BGE incentive program, you must

** Have Central A/C or Air Source Heat Pump or other primary electric heating system and receive electricity service from BGE,
OR
** Have a Gas Furnace or Gas Boiler and receive gas service from BGE.

If you have already had your home audited, but have not completed all your energy improvement projects, TerraLogos can also help you qualify for these rebates. Please call us at 410.225.5040, and we will review your Energy Efficiency Report to identify your next steps. If your Audit was performed before July 6, 2009, the incentive program requires that we revisit your home.

Get paid for saving money with TerraLogos and the BGE incentive program. Customers who have completed their energy improvement projects have shared their stories with us, indicating up to 50% savings on energy bills. Plus, their homes are finally comfortable for their families.

Two New TerraLogos Auditors
Welcome to Becky Arnold & Michael Uhl
Michael & Becky It seems kind of funny to welcome as a new addition someone who has been with you for 8 months. Blame it on not producing eNewsletters on our regular schedule.

So it's about time to introduce Becky Arnold, who comes to us after working with Habitat for Humanity and The Coalition to Prevent Childhood Lead Poisoning. She's the one on the right in the IR image.

Michael Uhl started at TerraLogos in November and has already completed close to 30 energy audits. With an engineering background, he has worked in far off places like Belize and Uganda and also taught environmental education to Maryland students. He's on the left.

For those of you who have been following us for awhile, Atticus Doman moved to San Francisco last Spring. That's too big a commute to do audits, so now he telecommutes and helps us process Reports and incentive filings.

Energy Saving Tip
Money from Earth AidTerraLogos has partnered with Earth Aid to make a new free service available to our customers and friends - the EarthAid.net Home Energy Dashboard.

When you set up a Dashboard account, Earth Aid automatically gathers all of your electric, gas, and water consumption information from your utilities and posts them to your account each month. This tool makes it easy to track your usage trends.

As you take steps to reduce your energy and water use, Earth Aid will tally these reductions and sell the carbon credits you generate to others interested in offsetting their carbon footprint.

And here's the best part. Earth Aid will share the profits from this sale with you!

Earth Aid also offers a rewards program that lets you earn points for saving energy & water. The points can be redeemed for discounts with local businesses.  For instance, you can use your rewards points to get a $50 discount on a TerraLogos Audit!

The Earth Aid site makes it even easier to save resources by highlighting rebates, tax incentives, and discounts that are appropriate for you, customizing its tips based on your personal usage trends.

Sign up today to start the process BEFORE you make any more changes. Earth Aid cannot start rewarding you for the resources you conserve until you have signed up.

Recycle the Fridge
Energy Saving Product
Pink FridgeBGE now makes removing your 2nd and 3rd refrigerator or freezer easy AND  profitable - in several ways.

BGE is interested in buying the old energy guzzlers in your basement and garage to get them off the
electric power grid.

With the help of Appliance Recycling Centers of America, BGE recyclers pick up units at your home. Then they responsibly remove the freon and recycle the metals. For your trouble, BGE will pay you $50 for each guzzler, with a limit of 2 units per household.

In addition,
you can save an additional $100 to $400 per year in energy costs for each unit by deciding not to replace the unit or, if you do, by selecting ENERGY STAR models. There's even an additional BGE rebate available when you purchase ENERGY STAR refrigeration units.

Click here for more information on this program,
part of BGE's Smart Energy Savers Program,
or call  866-0898-1901 to schedule a pick-up.
