Big Foot
Brookings Institute report on the carbon footprints of American cities
|
In May, the Brookings Institute report on carbon footprints ranked the top 100 metro areas in the US according how small a carbon footprint they leave. They examined the many ways we use energy and produce carbon emissions, including residential energy use.
The Baltimore-Towson area ranked 92nd out of 100. The average Baltimore resident emitted 1.358 tons of carbon from residential energy use - 47% more than the average Metro resident in the study.
Bakersfield CA ranked #1 for lowest residential use with only 0.350 tons per resident, and Seattle ranked #2 with 0.356 tons per resident. (Full report here)
Help shrink your footprint with a TerraLogos Home Energy Inspection specifically designed to help homeowners determine the most cost
effective methods for improving home energy efficiency. The TerraLogos process provides cost-effective solutions to Baltimore-area homeowners so that they can save

We've Been Busy
TerraLogos is growing
|
If things had gone according to schedule, this newsletter would have been sent out to you on June 24, not August 24.
But we have not been idle this summer.
We have now raced past our 350th Home Energy Inspection, and the momentum keeps building. So we needed more people.
Tory Brueck joined the team this month, bringing his strong background in construction contracting and building. Tory will coordinate our Sustainable Contractors Network as he trains with Frank and Atticus to perform inspections. Read more about our staff members here.
As for the Network, it continues to expand with qualified companies who can properly perform the energy improvements that we recommend. Remember, TerraLogos doesn't just properly diagnose the energy problems in a home, we also develop cost effective treatment plans for improving energy efficiency which are customized and prioitized for each home.
Plus, we connect you with contractors who can get the work done right.
We are your partners for home energy efficiency.

Change or Clean Your Filters
Featured Energy Saving Tip
|
Running your air conditioner or furnace with
dirty air filters is like driving with the parking brake on.
You lose 3 ways: *less conditioned air is delivered to your rooms, * the blower motor works harder which uses more electricity and $$, * the added wear reduces the life of the equipment.
Do your HVAC system a favor.
Buy replacement filters by the pack so you always have one on hand. Then, mark
the date on the filter when you make the change.
How often? At least 4 times a year.
If it looks too dirty on that schedule, change it more often. |
Better Batteries -Go with Rechargeables
Easy Energy Saver
|
Fact:
The electricity you buy in a
disposable battery is 1000 times more costly than the electricity you buy at
the wall plug.
And, they are not just costly to your wallet; they also create chemical time
bombs in our land fills.
When you use rechargeable Nickle
Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries, your cost for
portable power plummets. In addition, these batteries
- do not contain any heavy
metals such as lead, mercury, or cadmium;
- will run up to 4 times
longer than disposable batteries on each charge;
- should last for 3 years
before needing to be replaced, saving
you money and reducing household waste.
