Scott's Tech Tip
|
We would like to thank all the people of have taken their time to enter in their suggestions to our user forum. Please keep it up.
This is one of the most important, yet also one of the most neglected areas of computing. Backing up your data should be at the top of your computer maintenance list, right next to Virus Protection. Without data backup, you are running the risk of losing your data. And it will happen; it is only a matter of time. Campground Manager does not have a built in backup utility but we have kept the important data centrally located within a folder called "Data" typically found within the Omnis7 folder. If you have a multi-computer setup (a network of computers), this folder is located on one computer only (the server). There are many possible solutions to backing up your data like On-line backup services. On-line live backups are becoming more popular every day since the majority of the public now has high speed Internet. One company that we recommend as an option is called Evault. Visit their web site. Any questions about this product can be addressed to Brian Catalano at 510-903-7168 or Brian.Catalano@evault.com. Please visit our website where we have a section to sign up for Evault. You will receive free installation which is a $139 discount from Evault. For those of you not taking advantage of an online backup service like Evault, the data folder should be backed up on a daily basis. The media being used is also important because it should be small enough to be easily taken off site. Taking your backup information off-site is highly recommended to save your data from fire or theft. A perfect hardware solution for this is a USB thumb drive with a size of no less than 2 gig. This small device works like an external hard drive. It is important to remember that Campground Manager must NOT be running while you are trying to backup the data files. This is because files cannot be backed up while they are being used. It is also a good idea to keep more than one copy of your backed up data. With the example of using a USB thumb drive, create seven folders on this device named after the days of the week. Copy and replace the data folder within these folders based on the day of your backup. This way if you need to go back more than one day you can. Please call me if you have any questions and thanks for your business!
