January 2012

Sandwich Chamber

Greetings!
The Sandwich Chamber Board of Directors, staff and myself all want to wish you the happiest of holidays and best wishes for 2012!

This new year will be a big one for us as we will be launching our fundraising campaign to build the Chamber a permanent home on the site of the current Visitors Center.  This initiative has been years in the making as we have done research, assessed all options and had many Board discussions.  Ultimately, the decision to proceed was based on the need to serve our members, run our programs and welcome visitors with a center that is comfortable (bathrooms and parking!) and sets the stage for their visit to our village, historic sites, scenic drives and museums.

It is our emphatic goal to use this building to serve economic growth for the entire town and know that by accomplishing this we can strengthen the overall business climate.

In addition, we remain dedicated to keeping focused on all the programs, projects and events which directly serve our members.

Holly Days 2011 brought thousands of regional visitors to Sandwich, we put about 300 'heads in beds' on the Cape with our overnight package sales and our Shift Your Shopping and Stores & Doors Decorating contest truly added to the hustle and bustle of people out shopping in Sandwich for holiday gifts. We look forward to continuing to grow the strengths of that program.

Plans are underway for SandwichFest, and a strong series of business skills educational programs for 2012.

Lastly, based on the presentation at our last Issues & Alliances meeting of Anita Walker, the Executive Director of Mass Cultural Council, and the consensus built at that meeting, we will be working in 2012 on a partnership to earn the state's designation for Sandwich Village as a Cultural District.

We hope your plans for 2012 are as full and exciting!  As always, let us know what you need from the Chamber and what we can do as an association of mutually-supportive business owners and managers to make your 2012 goals successful.

Sincerely,
Kate Bavelock
Executive Director

Heritage Museums & Gardens Receives Major Grant

Heritage Museums & Gardens is pleased to announce that they have been awarded a major grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council's Cultural Facilities Fund. The $157,000 grant will be used by Heritage to achieve more sound energy efficiency, as well as improve the current ADA compliancy and handicap accessibility to Heritage's buildings and public spaces.

Heritage's American Art & Carousel Gallery's roof will be renovated using design specs and materials that will prepare the building for the installation of a solar array in the future. In addition, energy efficient windows with a UV control system will be installed to protect Heritage's Folk Art collection, as well as improve the building's overall energy performance. With the new roof, windows, and planned installation of solar, Heritage will move closer towards their goal of installing non-fossil fuel energy sources to reduce overall expenditures on energy and have a positive influence on the environment.

Also under this grant, new doors to the American Art Gallery will be installed, and restrooms will be remodeled with energy-efficient LED lighting and high-efficiency hand dryers, eliminating the need for paper towels. These changes will afford more energy efficiency and greatly improve the ease of handicap accessibility and ADA compliance at Heritage Museums & Gardens.

"We are so proud to have been awarded this grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council's Cultural Facilities Fund," said Museum Executive Director, Ellen Spear. "With this funding, we will be able to keep our buildings accessible for all visitors who come to Heritage, and recommit ourselves to taking small steps towards a cleaner planet through our improvements in energy efficiency and sustainability," added Spear.
